What's your BMI? If over 30 then possibly, you need to ask a doctor or pharmacist

MarshmallowsOnToast · 02/11/2024 23:28

That would roughly make your BMI 27. Overweight but not obese.

The Boots website says....

"Mounjaro is approved for people with a BMI over 30 (obesity), as well as those with a BMI over 27 (overweight) who also have weight-related health problems such as prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart problems"

Floralnomad · 02/11/2024 23:33

You do realise that you need to change what you eat even on these medications otherwise you will just put it all back on when you stop using them

aColdDayintheSun · 02/11/2024 23:35

Thanks for replies. I have high cholesterol.

I'd rather not see my GP. Can a private GP, i.e. the one provided by health insurance provider prescribe. Or can I just go to a high street chemist?

No, you're not entitled to apply for a prescription of MJ.
Your BMI has to be above 30.

MarshmallowsOnToast · 02/11/2024 23:38

Most people just buy from an online reputable company.

You provide your information & one of their GPs prescribe it for you. It gets posted to your door.

Yes. My understanding is that it suppresses your appetite and takes away the cravings. My diet is healthy apart from snacks. I work from home, am bored and fed up so I snack constantly. Hence I've gained a lot of weight but feel too crap to do anything.

Would it do we any harm if my BMI is under 30?

Would it help my very high cholesterol?

It's not about harm, it's about risk versus benefit. Currently you aren't obese and aren't increasing your risk of obesity related conditions. There are risks to taking Mounjaro, if the benefits are fewer or nonexistent then the risks are not worth it.

If losing weight and changing your diet will lower your cholesterol then you may find a supplier that will prescribe it to you at your current BMI. The Mounjaro itself won't act on your cholesterol, it's the resultant change in diet and weight that may result.

rhubay · 03/11/2024 00:03

If you have high cholesterol have an honest consultation with a reputable pharmacy and see what they say.

Mounjaro isn't going to stop you feeling bored and fed up, I'd tackle the root cause if I were you.

aColdDayintheSun · 03/11/2024 00:11

Thanks. Very helpful. Lot of the weight is on my stomach which I believe can lead to serious health problems.

I need a kick start!

I didn't say it would.

It's the reason I eat too much crap and am overweight. And why I can't just eat less and move more!

I'm stuck with wfh for the foreseeable future.

YourMumsATerf · 03/11/2024 00:22

Yes you are eligible if you have a bmi of 27 and have high cholesterol. I am I use Numan and they don't notify your gp if you ask them not to

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/11/2024 00:23

I hate WFH so I don't. This is one of the reasons. However, you have 'snacks' in the house. If that's bread and butter and cheese, that's hard. If it's biscuits and crisps and pies, you can just not have it.

Also, I did keto for what ails you. Much better once you've kicked sugar.

It does stop you feeling bored and fed up though. It's very motivating you only need to read the stories to know that

aColdDayintheSun · 03/11/2024 00:40

I've just filled out the Numan questionnaire and it looks like I'm eligible. I'm assuming the risks are neglible if it was so easy and they don't have to inform my GP?

OP posts:
SilenceInside · 03/11/2024 00:45

The online consultation is the first step, it will then be approved or not by a doctor. The risks are the risks, they are independent of whether or not you are eligible to be prescribed or not. Common gastric side effects affect about 1 in 10, the risks of more serious side effects are much much lower but still not negligible.

It's probably not that the risks are negligible. It's that the risks of high cholesterol plus being overweight outweigh the risks of the medication.

Are you working on the high cholesterol?

aColdDayintheSun · 03/11/2024 00:52

Oh that makes more sense!

Are you working on the high cholesterol?

Like I said, I'm too fed up. Plus the doctor thinks it's familial (?) and/or related to my underactive thyroid.

I was prescribed it with a BMI of 27.Ive had very high blood pressure since my 20s (I’m in my mid 60s), and arthritis. I’ve lost 2.5 st and my BP is normal for the first time since I was first diagnosis . I’ve been on 4 meds for it since I was 25 yrs and it was still too high . I can walk further and find it much easier and less exhausting and don’t get out of breath on any little incline. I hope you’ll get it. It’s been so worth it for me. I am on a maintenance dose of 0.5 (Wegovy). which will be reviewed in 6 months. I get it from Juniper.

aColdDayintheSun · 03/11/2024 01:03

Thanks @Shhhthedogssleeping I'm 61 so that's very encouraging.

Did you have gastric issues whilst on it? That doesn't appeal!

Obviously sensible for your GP to know. It is a serious drug which interacts with other drugs, including antibiotics, and can cause blood pressure issues amongst other side effects. Helpful for your GP to be able to prescribe in knowledge of this and keep an eye on you.

Go onto the manufacturer's website, (Eli Lilly), and read the side effects warnings, the risks are not negligible and you should be aware.

Oh I also meant medication, not just food, for the cholesterol. I have a family history so I know! And an under active thyroid for that matter.

I can't diet. I can do keto. It suppresses appetite. I think it's probably similar to the feeling the weight-loss drugs give you. Just not bothered about cake. But whatever works!
