Weaning off MJ

netmum123MJ · 21/10/2024 13:08

Hi is anyone trying to taper off Mounjaro? I have used for a few months lost 20lbs however everytime I try to stop I am back to square one with food noise and over eating. Will I be on this forever?

I had the same experience. I came off it for a month and put on 11lbs.

When you stop, you will come back to all the same issues that you were dealing with before you were on the medication. It's not a miracle cure, especially if you stop taking it.

I've started again with it and this time am trying to build up a good exercise routine and change what I am eating, rather than just the amount.

You really do need to make a conscious effort to change your lifestyle, otherwise you will just bounce back to square one.

Thank you for your reply @elderflowerspritzer

Did you start back at 2.5mg? I didn't expect to revert back so quickly almost over night! I was experiencing quite low mood on it so not missing that but I have not stopped eating and that's now causing low mood anyway so really can't win!

I’m not there yet by a long shot but when I’m off it I intend to do 5:3, moving eventually to 5:2.

Are you making sure you’re hitting your nutritional needs? If you have sufficient fat/protein and fibre you’ll be unlikely to want more. Maybe have nuts, hard boiled egg, greek yogurt available for munch attack. A small chunk of cheddar with an apple hits the spot. Don’t give up! You know your triggers, have a plan to react differently. You’ve got this!

FlappingMadly · 21/10/2024 18:41

And are you exercising? Even a walk will raise your dopamine.

Yes started back at 2.5.

It's just an annoying truth that underlying issues do need to be addressed! Are you getting any other help with the low mood?

netmum123MJ · 21/10/2024 19:22

Yes I am out with dog 2/3 times per day and I try to do gym time permitting but really struggled when tiredness kicks in. I am going to give it another bash. Some people have suggested do less clicks? I am greedy that's the bottom line hence why I am in this state in the first place Confused

Hey, I’m in a similar situation but with wegovy. I’ve been fully off it for a month (after a couple of months weaning off of it). The food noise is making me miserable.. I’m struggling to make good choices as all I’m thinking about is food again.

i don’t think anywhere would prescribe it to me again as my bmi is under 25 now… if I could get it and stay on a low dose forever I would :-(

SnacklessWonder · 21/10/2024 19:48

You need to change your way of thinking. Food noise, cravings, hunger - they are all perfectly normal things. And it's okay to feel them. You've just got to find a way of managing or distracting them.

Try volume eating - more food for less calories. Drink a pint of water when you feel really hungry as that can often take the edge off. Stock up on high protein and low calorie snacks. I keep things like Babybel or mini Pepperami or multipack crisps like Wotsits handy when I need a snack.

It's horrible! You might still get prescribed it I think it depends where you order from... I was thinking of getting another pen and doing maybe 20 clicks every 5 days?

Absolutely agree however all much easier said than done. I feel like I need to be back on it longer term.

You'd not get to the end of the pen before the 30 days though, would you?

And I think that's fair enough if you really feel that you don't have the willpower. Lots of people will stay on it long-term.

I don't plan to as I can't afford it!

Doggymummar · 21/10/2024 21:35

I stopped for three ,onths due to finances, gained 10lb had to start back on lowest dose again.

Yes it's an expensive habit however in my case so is the junk food I eat. I have just ordered lowest dose and going back on it as soon as it arrives Grin

Can I ask why you gained. I know that sounds trite but, when you gained were you monitoring calories, exercising, weighing frequently etc? Not judging - I am working up to coming off myself soon so just interested!

netmum123MJ · 21/10/2024 21:42

@SnacklessWonder it's so expensive but I'm willing to sell body parts at this rate!

😂 You may not need MJ at all after that... I reckon I could chop my boobs off and lose a stone.

ItsAlrightDarling · 21/10/2024 21:45

Are you still in the obese category OP?
I am just tapering off MJ. My BMI is now 22.5 and my TDEE is around 1700 calories so I’m calorie counting and making sure I’m sticking to this. I definitely feel hungrier, but I feel like I’ve got to the point where I can just acknowledge the hunger and then wait until my next meal to eat. Hopefully it’s something I can continue with long term.
I’m focussing on high quality protein and veg, which seems to be helping.

netmum123MJ · 21/10/2024 21:46

@SnacklessWonder I love food and can't stop eating when I start. I am very active but I am also always very hungry!

I do too - that's why I try to hold out on eating as long as possible 😫 If I eat breakfast (or before 12) I get even more hungry (when I am not on MJ). I am going to try doing 16:8 most days and that will be two meals a day.

You're not greedy though. That's an outdated opinion science no longer supports. Being fat doesn't mean you're greedy and lazy. It means you got a poor genetic hand in a world where obese-inducing food is virtually impossible to avoid.

The chances are if you're fat then you've got exactly the same amount of willpower as a thin person, but they don't have the level of food noise, hunger and biological drive to eat, eat, eat.

You might need to be on the medication forever, because obesity is a disease we can treat but not cure. People with high blood pressure can sometimes enact sufficient lifestyle changes to come off their medication, but it's rare, so they take medication to combat it. Obesity is no different, medically.

Society, however, is taking a while to catch up. And it's going to take us a while to let go of the 'I'm like this because I'm greedy' mindset that's been drilled into us since childhood, that it's a moral failing, that we're somehow lesser than thin people. We're not. Sorry, I've gone on a bit there. But - you're not greedy.

ObsidianTree · 21/10/2024 22:04

I think you do need to be on it for longer than a few months to work on making more permanent changes. There is some research to say that coming off it slowly, gradually lowering the dose helps. I think complete stop cold turkey isn't known to be very effective for maintenance.

At BMI 28 you still could be on it for longer anyway. Maybe allow yourself to stay on it for a longer period and then when you're ready to try again, reduce your dose gradually.

SnacklessWonder · 21/10/2024 22:27

But some people simply ARE greedy @HippoPortlyMouse I confidently say that as I am one of them. Not everything can be explained away by medicine.

For me being overweight isn't/wasn't a chronic disease it's literally because I ate too much, drank too much wine and didn't move enough. I am 5ft 1 and was probably consuming 2500 calories a day, more on weekends. I'd love to say that it's because it's an illness (and I'm not disputing that for some people it really is) but it wasn't. I just overate and I could have stopped it but I turned a blind eye and that weight creeps on quicker than you can blink. I now know that to maintain, I need to consume no more than 1600 calories.

I was greedy and I was lazy. I thought I could eat whatever I wanted and do no exercise and eventually that caught up with me.

Because I was hungry! Simple as that. I have a thread on here that's been open since march 2023 that documents my journey along with a few other early adopters. The hunger comes back with vengeance when you stop. I won't stop again, I will move to a low dose and cut anything I can to keep going,
