Mounjaro while on Depo

Is anyone else on the Depo contraceptive? How are you finding taking Mounjaro while on Depo?

I am aware MJ might cause issues with birth control so am prepared to use condoms. I don't really want to stop Depo as it's wonderful not having periods. However, I'm sure depo is the culprit for making me gain weight like crazy. Will Mounjaro make a difference or will I need to stop depo to lose weight??

Sorry I can’t give any actual advice. My timeline is:

2017 BMI 20 started depo
2021 BMI 23 gained weight since depo
2023 BMI 30, came off Depo in December
2024 Periods returned in May. Started Mounjaro in August

There wasn’t any overlap between the medications. However looking back, I did gain weight on the Depo. I’d say my weight gain from the Depo was the few kg gradually over the first few years. After that my weight gain was down to my poor diet.

I don’t think you need to come off Depo if you try Mounjaro - it likely will have little impact on your weight loss. It’s more that Mounjaro impacts the Depo as you’re aware - it may be less effective as a contraception method. Best to talk things through with your pharmacy.

The only contraceptive MJ affects is oral contraceptives - obv due to how MJ changes how your digestive stuff works. My nurse (that normally deals with my contraceptive issues) did a lot of research into this on my behalf and told me she was wholly confident MJ and the depo would have no contradictions - meaning the depo would work 100% as normal!

I followed her advice and I'm having my own issues with the depo - namely no bloody libido! So I'm going back to condoms for now. But just thought I'd reply to this now while I've found it - MJ only affects oral contraceptives!

Many thanks indeed. I did decide to come off DEPO actually. Not sure if it was the right decision or not, but have lost 2 and a half stone in 3 months, so I'm pretty pleased with that in any case. Thanks for your help.
