Why are we not being vocal about the miracle of weight loss jabs. ?

AboutVattime · 07/10/2024 18:59

I started Mountjaro in April at 15 stone 10
I am now 11 stone . Which is my goal weight for my 5'10 frame. I have maintained that for 2 months having started regular exercise that I really enjoy - as well as ZOE healthy eating /cooking which I enjoy equally.

When people say to me 'Wow ! You look amazing (I'm not daft - they mean you don't look fat anymore) .. how have you done it . I am truthful and say 'fat jabs' .. and expand if they don't understand.

However , I have noticed on all the gazillion threads in here about weight loss injections, people are reticent to be honest . .. "my DH knows but haven't told anyone else " .. is a common remark . But WHY ???

Obesity is a life threatening condition. Like Dementia , cancer , liver failure etc etc .. if anyone had one of those conditions and found a drug to help , would they keep quiet or shout it from the bloody roof tops . ?

Or is the old adage true . Fat is a feminist (female) issue ? and we need to pretend it isn't ?

Clearly some people are angry about this drug, and I’ll admit I’m one of them.

Although some of you say “what’s it to you” it does affect the rest of us. I’m really, really not someone who succumbs to peer pressure and I’ve got a tonne of stubbornness but it’s just another thing thrown at women to stress over.

When your mate Sharon gets Botox and fillers, and everyone’s like oh…, you look amazing, so young, it does affect you.

When someone drops 3 stone and get told the same, it does affect you.

You feel pressurised to follow suit. A lot of women will take it, and are doing so, for no good reason.

For me, I have to work really hard to get fit and healthy. I’ve PCOS and it jumps on if I take my eye off the ball. I spend 10 hours a week keeping fit. I’m not going to take these drugs, even though I’d save myself a lot of work, because I have willpower and discipline.

It’s not right, and it’s not fair on us women, to be being fed this line of “miracle drug, with no more nasties than a paracetamol, is the answer to you being overweight”.

TBH I’d like to see some numbers. How much will this ultimately save the NHS on obesity related services, versus that that’ll need to be spend on those with side effects. Obviously that’s a no brainer for them. There will be some collateral damage but I can see how this quick fix delights the medical profession.

So now women choosing to get healthy is a feminist issue? We should stay fat to make you feel better about yourself and doing it the "right" way?

It’s not a miracle though. It’s laziness.

I’ve got 3 friends currently using jabs and I 100% think they’ll be back to fat by this time next year. They won’t change their lifestyles to maintain a loss.

The government should focus on education about healthy eating and perhaps subsidise fresh food and tax junk more heavily.

I’m annoyed in general about this though. I lost 4 stone this year by keeping my mouth shut every time a malteser flew past 😂 Everyone thinks I used ozempic, which pisses me off!! It’s not a mystery how to lose weight, it just needs research and focus.

Well done on keeping your mouth shut to the malteaser - perhaps you could try shutting your mouth in other circumstances too? Might prevent some of the ignorance coming out.

itwasnevermine · 08/10/2024 08:36

Oh and in terms of the NHS, it's estimated obesity costs £6.5 BILLION a year and that'll only rise.

Ignorant

CesarSoubreyon · 08/10/2024 08:42

In some cases I think the response is jealousy. It's often other overweight people who are negative. Perhaps they can't afford the injections and need a way to feel better about themselves.

I don't remember this outrage about Orlistat. Probably because it didn't work very well. Also it had horrific side effects (oily orange diarrhoea), so perhaps Orlistat was ok to take because it made fat people suffer enough to 'earn' their weight loss?

We take medications for all sorts of things and no one complains about those- but a weight loss medication that is almost entirely self funded and will ultimately save the NHS money ? It's open season. I wish people would just be honest about their intentions for posting about laziness and 'injecting crap into veins'. No one is genuinely worried about fat people, it comes from a place of hate and disgust, sometimes mixed in with a bit of misogyny.

Lol. Ok I’ll stay fat so you can feel better about yourself. Have a think about what you’re saying says about you as a person. You sound awful.

Clearly some people are angry about this drug, and I’ll admit I’m one of them.

Why are you angry about a drug? Are you also angry about statins for high cholesterol or beta blockers for blood pressure? Those issues can be helped by diet too but no one complains about people taking them.

It's this special contempt for weight loss drugs that I simply don't get. I think if it didn't work as well as it does nobody would care.

CoverMeInMarmalade · 08/10/2024 08:48

Every now and again a thread comes along on mn that reminds me just how utterly awful some people are. This is one of them.

But it also reminds me just how totally and utterly effed up many people (women especially) are about food and weight. And it's not always the ones you think it is. What a number the world has done on us, that we look at someone's weight and use it to judge their moral worth. It's truly the most ridiculous thing and it would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.

Ozgirl75 · 08/10/2024 08:49

Funnily enough though @TangerineLoverNotAFighter i almost respect you for having the balls to say that the reason you don’t want people to get slim and healthy is because you want to look better than them. I mean, it’s a weird thing to admit, but it’s more truthful than “oh but the side effects”.

Getting diabetes, heart disease and arthritis doesn't make me more of a feminist.

Why would anyone be jealous that people are buying willpower?

You can buy or fake most things in life, doesn’t mean you achieved it. It’s a cheat, and that’s totally fine if you’re okay with that, but at least admitting you’re cheating!

itwasnevermine · 08/10/2024 08:52

@berksandbeyond YOU STILL NEED WILLPOWER!!!

Yes the jabs make you less hungry but they don't stop you eating! You still have to make good choices. I've not had a takeaway in 8 weeks, yes I've been tempted time and time again but I've said no! That's MY willpower. Yes the jabs have changed things in terms of me being fuller for longer, I have my breakfast and now I'm not hungry till lunch, and then I can wait till dinner. I still have to pick good food and sources of protein etc.

Wonkypictureframe · 08/10/2024 08:54

I’m not going to take these drugs, even though I’d save myself a lot of work, because I have willpower and discipline.

I feel like this could replace 90% of the Why Mounjaro? threads. It would save us all a lot of time typing.

Guess what? My teenager saw me eat an ice cream for the first time ever this summer. I’d never had one in front of her before, which is every single holiday/ice cream van/cafe/restaurant/meal at friends house of her entire life. Partly because I eat so little sugar that I rarely actually want one, party because on the rare occasion I do, I don’t, because they are BAD for me, and partly because I knew if someone with more ‘willpower and discipline’ saw me eating that one ice cream they’d make a lot of assumptions about fat me that would have been really unfair. And this summer, on a hot day, I thought ‘why not’?

Why cheating? I genuinely don’t understand this. If some people have, as bariatric specialists and endocrinologists will tell you, a medical reason for increased appetite, why is taking a medicine to normalise their food response cheating? This sense that you lose weight through no effort with these drugs is just not true.

Moggmegg · 08/10/2024 08:57

Why is this annoying? Surely you lost the weight for yourself and for your own health, you can be proud of this and how you did it without the judgement against others? Personally I don't think it's an easy option- to invest a lot of money, inject weekly, be even more considered with your diet as you want to make sure in the fewer calories you're eating you're getting enough nutrients and protein etc. Fair play to people however they lose weight!
