Have thrown the towel in. HORRENDOUS illness - Mounjaro

Autumnalchick · 07/10/2024 12:59

I've been on it since May, very few side effects other than occasional nausea and constipation.
However last week I took my injection as usual then BAM sickness, diarrhoea and feeling more ill than I can remember. The sickness was so bad I ended up in hospital on a drip, this lasted for a whole week! Today I finally feel back to normal. Blood tests, stool samples etc all indicated no infection and didn't find anything unusual. Doctors concluded it was a bad reaction to the Mounjaro. So in the bin it goes!
Has this happened to anyone else? I can't understand why I was fine on Mounjaro for 4 months then suddenly had this awful reaction. It's not exaggeration to say I was feeling so ill I would have finished myself off had it not been for my kids.
This has scared me and despite losing 3 stone it was not worth it.

Is there any chance that the contents of your pen froze, even briefly?

LoquaciousPineapple · 07/10/2024 13:02

That's really strange. I started getting very mild bad side effects about a month ago for no apparent reason after having nothing at all before aside from the intended ones. But I've not heard of someone being hit so extremely!

ToBeOrNotToBee · 07/10/2024 13:05

I started feeling bad once I went up to 10.
Shakey, feeling faint on standing, tired, muscle aches, headaches.
Realised it was my electrolytes and sucked on two electrolyte tabs and felt right as rain within 20 minutes.

The drip you got is exactly the same.

When dieting, your not taking in as much food, and if you're not careful, won't be meeting all your salts and sugar needs. So it's not unusual to experience what you felt.

No I'd never heard of it either. However on Googling I did find someone on Reddit had the same experience as me.
The Doctors were confused why I suddenly had a reaction too. Definitely a bizarre and unpleasant experience 😥

Thanks for this, interestingly I actually left my pen in it's delivery box for a few days before I used it. So perhaps it got too warm 🤔

I was vomiting for almost a week, nothing would stay down. Became so dehydrated that's why I ended up in hospital. The drip was wonderful though!

@Autumnalchick ah okay, hope you okay and not too shaken up, be proud of what you have achieved.

olympicsrock · 07/10/2024 21:36

Had you just gone up a dose? 5 to 7.5mg is a big jump for many.

It is unusual to end up as ill as OP, and an IV is not "exactly the same" as sucking a couple of electrolyte tablets 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sharing misinformation like that is potentially dangerous. People should not delay in getting medical help if they start to get significant side effects.

RunningAndSinging · 11/10/2024 13:06

I had something like this. Did fine for months and got up to 10mg then terrible reactions (not as bad as yours) on lower doses and with different pens (must be a sucker for punishment). I was convinced it was the batch but no - I can’t take 4mg now without terrible side effects so I am on a break and am going to try Wegovy again. As you say there are a few on Reddit who have been through similar.

Thehop · 11/10/2024 14:38

I've just had my 4th dose and was in hospital in a drip on Monday. No infection but we all decided food poisoning as only i ate fish on Saturday.

im so glad you're on the mend. Hopefully mine wasn't a reaction too but I'll be keeping a close eye, thank you for sharing.

Autumnalchick · 15/10/2024 15:05

Thank you ladies for your experiences. I have to say it has terrified me and I can't bring myself to take anymore which is such a shame as I lost a good amount of weight. Food noise already creeping back in!

I've just had the same but it was the other end! Ended up in hospital on a drip too. I can't bring myself to take it anymore as I was so ill, which is so disappointing as I'm now back to my usual eating habits.

Oh my goodness really? What strength were you on? I wonder if it was a bad batch 🤔
It took me 2 weeks to feel normal again, wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.
Annoyingly it was a brand new pen aswell, £180 down the drain 😫

It was my first dose of the 5mg. Yes such a waste of money but I can't risk being that ill again. I'm glad you're finally feeling better. Xxx

ElsaMars · 18/10/2024 11:26

Oh no, I had this last week! I'm on 5mg, had been for a week already and I suddenly had D&V but it was off and on through the entire week, and I was only physically sick during the night. I felt dreadfully unwell and I was in bed all week.

I was just thinking this morning that although I'm pleased with the weightloss since I started in Aug (about 1.5 stone) I'm fed up with the side effects, particularly, now hating wine, which I used to absolutely love, gutted.

Autumnalchick · 18/10/2024 12:05

@ElsaMars @Babycakes39 crikey ladies this is mad. I wonder if I should contact the supplier and let them know?
I hope you're all feeling better now. As much as I was enjoying the weight loss it really isn't worth being so ill for!

You can report significant side effects here:

FionaBeee · 18/10/2024 17:00

I had the same!

First week of 5mg, couldn't eat or keep water down, horribly sick. Ended up in hospital on a drip to replace all the fluids that I couldn't manage to take orally.
Scared me, though, had a week off and went back to 2.5mg. Since then I have been increasing my dose marginally each week to transition to the 5mg much MUCH more gently.

I haven't had the same reaction since, so I'm sticking with the small weekly increases, which seem to be working well.
(and yes, I know that isn't how its prescribed, and not what the schedule says yada yada, but I'm listening to my body on this one😉)

MaiAamWaliHun · 18/10/2024 18:00

I've had almost constant IBS since going on 5mg and am not even losing weight. About to give up.

Babycakes39 · 18/10/2024 20:19

I've just reported it, thank you for the link!

MountKilimounjaro · 10/11/2024 22:10

I've just come across this thread. I also experienced awful symptoms and ended up in hospital on a drip at what I think must have been the same time.

I've been on MJ for 7 months and hadn't gone up a dose so it was a real shock to suddenly be so ill.

I'll report this too, thank you for sharing.
