Sensitivity to mounjaro

ChristmasiscomingImstillfat · 05/10/2024 15:43

I managed 3 weeks of 2.5 of mounjaro with zero side effects and reasonable weight loss. 48 hours after the 3rd injection I was hit by diarrhoea that was really severe for approx 36 hours followed by days of on and off episodes. I needed a full week off work as I work in a hospital. I didn’t take the next injection and haven’t taken one since. I really really want to try again but not sure if it’s worth it. I have had my gall bladder out 20 years ago so wondering if there is a link. Has anyone had similar experience and braved returning to mounjaro ?
I have read up on taking the half dose but this is a bit worrying as not what has been prescribed. Thanks in advance.

I've had my gallbladder out and been in mj for 8 week. I was quite sick the first week and then it's been fine, apart from one episode of diarrhoea after I had a fried egg. I now avoid oil and butter as much as possible and everything has been fine since.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 05/10/2024 16:28

I've no gallbladder.
Diahorrea is a side effect for loads of people.. usually into 2nd and 3rd week.
Use imodium and diarolytes.. it will settle down.
Avoid all fatty / fried/ spicey food.
I'm onto week 11 .. now on 7.5mg.
I had Diahorrea on 5mg into 2nd week..used imodium and diarolytes.. thought it wouldn't stop.. but I'd just come back from Greece and had eaten a Gyros
I've lost 2 stone

ChristmasiscomingImstillfat · 05/10/2024 17:22

Thank you all . I couldn’t think of any particularly fatty/ greasy that I could’ve eaten to upset it. The only thing standing out is a baked potato. I used Imodium at the time but it didn’t feel like it helped for a long time! Really keen to start again just terrified of going through that again. I am not a stranger to being ‘loose’ but this was horrific !

I'm on week 18 now, on 7.5mg and had my gallbladder out 8 years ago.
So far I've been lucky and had no side effects.

ChunkyMunky · 06/10/2024 03:05

I’ve been on for 7 weeks. I’m reducing my dose from 5mg to 2.5mg as the side affects have been too much on 5mg.

Darlinghag · 06/10/2024 03:17

I have no galbladder and suffered terribly as a result before MJ. MJ has made me more normal as its slowed down digestion. I’ve had a few days where its been like pre-mj but its not made it any worse.

It seems it is split either people suffer with constipation or the complete opposite! I just don’t like the fact I still don’t know what triggered the prolonged episode of diarrhoea and so I wouldn’t know what to avoid in future !

The medication does build up in your system so side effects can definitely start a bit later.

It's the weirdest thing but I also started to get side effects about week 5 and the highest dose I've got to in 14 weeks is 3.75mg. I always read people saying their suppression wears off days 5 and 6 but mines stronger than ever those days. I think some of us must just be very sensitive to the drug.

My weightloss has been steady despite the low dose, I've lost 34lbs.

I have just come back from Greece too and half of the group of friends is/was violently sick! I got it first but thought it was Mounjaro but since then 4 other adults were/are sick with vomiting and diarrhea! I am the only one on Mounjaro the rest of them is healthy and none of them ate excessively or drunk any alcohol!

How have you found it as the weeks have progressed ? Did you struggle continuously ? Did your side effects begin on 2.5 or the 5? I have read that some people are a lot more sensitive to it in general (gall bladder or not !) and that it is important to build up without allowing the drug to accumulate ?! But I thought that the whole point was to keep titrating the levels up. If I decide to begin again I would want to stay on as low a dose as possible.

How are you now? I am just into week five (second month of 2.5mg) and after no side effects at all I have sudden watery diarrhoea. I’ve read about it and panicking a bit because some people said they had it for weeks and had to stop! This drug has helped me so much I’m hoping this will pass

Hi unfortunately I didn’t continue but still looking into going back on the mounjaro. Maybe in the new year. I take daily magnesium and actually wondered if it was maybe a build up of that causing the diarrhoea. Also for you remember it is norovirus season so may not be related to the Mj. Hope you feel better soon

@ChristmasiscomingImstillfat I appreciate this is a long while ago. But did you ever start again?

I had the same issue as you. I tried half dose and had the same reaction. But I only left it a week break before trying that.

I'm just wondering if you started again, how you got on?

Hi, yes I restarted at the end of January and have very slowly lost approx 1.5stone since then . However had a blip after trying to move up to 5mg and had a similar experience to last time 💩 which was not fun. Therefore decided to have a 2 week break then restarted it , still staying on the 2.5. I definitely feel I am more sensitive to the medication and have to be really careful with what I eat, but I am trying to see this as a whole lifestyle change rather than a quick fix. Would like to lose another 1.5 stone ideally but not sure financially how many more pens I will manage. Overall I am pleased with how it’s going despite the blip!

I experienced some similar unpleasant side effects but this seemed to relate to the foods I ate on injection day. I'm a few weeks on now and have no side effects. I stuck to 2.5 to be on the safe side. I do feel the weight loss has slowed down but given I lost 2 stone in 6 weeks,.perhaps that's no bad thing!

That is fab, and yes totally agree about being careful around jab day and for me I have the be careful what I eat the night before jab. I definitely don’t feel full suppression on the 2.5 anymore but actually don’t think that’s a bad thing as I am trying hard to use this time to educate myself around nutrition. I know the jab will be dulling some of the cravings at least.

So, did you not get the chronic diarrhoea and vomitting? This is what's made me stop. There is no way I could work and take it. I can't say it was down to what I was eating, as the suppression was so strong I was hardly eating anything. Even on 1.25mg.

I lost a stone in a month. I've already put a few pounds back on. I really want it to work.

I'm wondering about waiting until the school holidays (I'm a teacher) and just going for it! Making my body work through the side effects and hopefully come out the other side?

Hi, this time I had diarrhoea after approx 11 weeks back on 2.5mg.in those 11 weeks I had almost zero other side effects. Maybe some headaches and slight insomnia etc.
I had just taken the first 5mg on the Thursday night and by Friday morning I had sulphur burps which soon led to diarrhoea. I know this was down to what I had eaten the day before injection ( a quiche!!) and was basically the heavy food rotting in my stomach causing bacteria , due to slow digestion. ( as far as I can understand )
The diarrhoea this time lasted maybe 5 days, but only really 2 days of not being able to properly safely leave the house. Luckily I was on planned leave the following week otherwise doubt I would’ve made it to work! I had a 2 week break then started again being very careful what I eat. Just take it a week at a time , maybe the summer holidays is a good time to start, but remember it isn’t for everyone!

Thank you! This is so so helpful. I'm so glad it worked out for you. I agree it is like the food is stuck and starting to rot. The smell when bringing it back up is absolutely revolting. And the food doesn't appear to have been digested at all!

Now, I feel I eat fairly 'clean' when on mounjaro. I don't fancy anything else to be honest. I did have fish and chips the day before that started all the trouble. But that was unusual.

Apart from fatty food, what else are you avoiding? Or is it just quantity? As in just stick to very very small meals?

I've already put half the weight back on in 2 weeks. I'm gutted. But it's not just the weight. I'd stopped snoring, my feet weren't swelling and my diabetes control was astonishing! I really need this to work. Just need to get through the digestive issues!

It is such a minefield. I have kept a diary to see what if anything may be triggering things. It is definitely heavy foods such as quiche that have set things off! I try and avoid fatty foods but this has been from before MJ after I had my gallbladder out. I am trying to stick to reduced carbs and high protein but nothing artificial if that makes sense , more chicken and yoghurt etc. sometimes it is trial and error but certainly around jab day / day before I don’t eat anything too adventurous ! To be honest I feel a bit gross about the whole rotting food thing , so I am very very mindful about what I eat at the moment. It’s worth a try I think as overall this has been a game changer for me despite the set backs.

I seemed to react to foods with high sulphur levels such as eggs, mushrooms, cruciferous veg, beans/pulses, even steak. Spicy food has unfortunately been quite triggering for me, which is gutting because I love curries!

My provider is Second Nature and this means I have access to support from a dietician. She advised me to eat high protein, low fat around injection day, and to avoid processed, rich or spicy foods. She also advised me to eat smaller amounts. I wasn't very hungry at all so I was making myself eat slightly larger amounts at a time.

I've been trying to eat foods low in sulphur ever since and my symptoms have gone. I found a useful pdf on Dr Michael Ruscio's website.

I hope you manage to find relief from the symptoms.

ChristmasiscomingImstillfat · 18/05/2025 12:43

That is really interesting as I was eating a lot of eggs, not so much now ( thanks to the Mj giving me the ick) so wonder if that has contributed somewhere. That’s all really helpful thank you
