Mounjaro needles / bonus dose

nougatcougar · 26/09/2024 21:35

I've had 3 injections so far, but noticed that the needles I have don't have an inner cap (as per instructions). Has anyone else found this? I've just sent an enquiry to med express in case it's a problem.

The next q is re "bonus dose" - noticed that I have one official dose left then almost as much liquid again as well - so now I think I understand what people call the bonus dose. How do you get it, given you only get 4 needles? I've seen diabetic needles for sale on Amazon - do people just get those?

Thanks for advice, I'm so glad I started this, I'm 8lb down and have lost my constant munchies as well as wine/beer cravings.

You can buy insulin needles from local pharmacies or there are links to both those and insulin syringes on the website linked at the top of the main 'continuing mounjaro' thread.

Great, thank you!

Bear in mind the dial won't continue to turn easily after the 4th dose. You can do it really hard with pliers or similar and then it should work.

I use a 1ml sterile plunger syringe to get the bonus dose out because it's much easier. If you want to stick to the same strength measure 0.6ml, otherwise you tend to get a bit more in the final one and it can be a stepping stone up to the next strength.

I tried doing the hard twist for a bonus dose but couldn't do it so I went to pharmacy and got myself syringes. Once I emptied the pen with a syringe I bloody worked out how to do an extra dose on an empty pen😅

Snozzlemaid · 26/09/2024 23:48

The needles I had with my first pen didn't have the inner cap. Confused me when taking my first dose but then read on here some don't and it wasn't a problem at all.

I use these syringes for the 5th dose https://www.shdmedical.co.uk/needles/bbraun-omnican-1ml-30g-syringe-individually-blister-packed/

ukmedi.co.uk/products/fms-micro-syringe-32g-8mm-1ml-fms-fms-32g-10ml-ukmedi-co-uk

These syringes are ultra fine 32G (higher gauge finer needle) and 8mm long

rainydaysaway · 28/09/2024 08:05

How do you get the bonus dose out with the syringe?

Snozzlemaid · 28/09/2024 08:26

Stick the syringe needle in through the red bit at the end of the pen and draw the liquid out into the syringe.

Thank you

This is syringe thing is new to me. Are you then able to screw the needle on to the syringe?

What size syringes are you purchasing?

There are two ways to get the bonus/5th dose out of your pen.

Hard twist or use a syringe inserted into the red seal to extract the remaining liquid.

Hard twist you might need pliers. Link attached. N_. This has worked for me my last 2 pens.

Using a syringe allows you to see how much liquid is left and/or calculate a slightly stronger dose if you want to use as a step up to next dose (make sure you know what you are doing 0.6ml = full dose of each pen). I have the syringes, thankfully haven't had to use them yet but plan to if I need to. I don't like the idea of the 8mm needle or that it will have been slightly blunted piercing the seal before I use it, although many say they haven't noticed a significant difference. You need to be very aware of hygiene when doing too.

Snozzlemaid · 28/09/2024 08:58

You buy syringes that have a fixed needle on.
You push the needle in through the red dot at end of pen, extract the liquid, then use the needle & syringe full of your dose to inject into you.

I use these https://www.shdmedical.co.uk/needles/bbraun-omnican-1ml-30g-syringe-individually-blister-packed/

Snozzlemaid · 28/09/2024 08:59

The needle is a bit longer than the pen needles but is still very fine so it doesn't hurt.

flobbynomore · 29/09/2024 09:56

What about the 30 days rule? If you use the bonus dose as the 5th week, this takes you over. Does that matter?

SilenceInside · 29/09/2024 10:15

5 doses doesn't take you over the 30 days rule. The injection days are day 1, day 8, day 15, day 22, day 29. All within the 30 days.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 29/09/2024 13:36

I have used a syringe for all of my 'bonus' doses. Very easy to do as described above and ensures I get every last bit of the MJ out 😁

When you inject, aim to go in at a slight angle as the needle is a little longer than most pen needles. It doesn't hurt at all 👍

Can’t get the bonus dose out. Any tips?

I couldn't do it straightaway either - I tried with an insulin syringe. I think you need to ensure the needle is through the red seal all the way and into the liquid, and be prepared for some resistance/vacuum. I got it out on the third try but chickened out of injecting it in case if contaminated it somehow with all the in and out faffing! Can anyone point to a good video on how to do this properly, others seem to find it easy so I fear I am missing something!

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 05/12/2024 21:01

Isn't this dangerous? Like if you get an air bubble can't you do harm etc...

I want to start MJ and worried about costs hence looking this up but I'm a bit scared!

Snozzlemaid · 05/12/2024 21:04

No, you're not injecting it into a vein so it doesn't matter if there's an air bubble.
But once you have the liquid in the syringe you can hold it needle up and tap so any air goes to the top. You then push the plunger a little to prime as you do with the pen needles.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 05/12/2024 21:09

Ah thanks that helps I equally don't have a clue about any of it so that helps. Thankyou.
