Can I split 5mg into 2.5mg twice a week?

Hi, I’m now on a 5mg pen as the 2.5mg had slowed my loss right down. I was getting a few side effects still on the 2.5mg which weren’t overly pleasant, so have done 2 weeks on 3.75mg (45 clicks) to get my body used to the increase. I’ve only lost 0.5kg in 2 weeks on the 3.75mg but getting worse side effects, so my question is, can I take 2.5mg twice a week to make it up to a 5mg? I hope this makes sense! 😊 TIA

You can split the dose (obviously you will need extra needles) I am doing so and have for a while. You will get a more even dose of MJ throughout the week.
Taking 3.75 you could expect highs of around 5.2mg and lows of 2.7mg but doing 2.5mg twice a week (3.5 days apart) you would tend to have highs of 6.2mg and lows of 4.8mg.

You may prefer to do a lower dose than 2.5 twice a week?

This should help you work doses out.

Thank you, that’s very helpful 👍🏼 Still unsure what to do though as my weight loss on the 2.5 had come to a slow.

I went from 2.5 to 3.75 then a split 5 (2 x 2.25) as I felt 5 was too much.
How about splitting 3.75 into 2 doses? Obviously, it doesn't split perfectly but you could have a split that was very close.

Thank you for the reply! 😊 Did splitting them give you a good loss without the side effects?

I am losing a steady 2 or 3 pounds a week and other than being slightly bunged up (all bran helps), I have no side effects.
But my philosophy is very much to try and keep my doses as low as possible with the hope that when I hit goal weight (long way to go) I will find it easier to maintain.

Increasing the dosage will not all by itself increase your weight loss. Mounjaro works by suppressing appetite - it doesn't magically melt fat away!

Is your appetite suppressed? Do you feel hungry at mealtimes, then eat your meal and feel satisfied after eating? -If yes, then it is working the way it should.

Are you tracking calories? Mounjaro works by helping you keep to a counted calorie deficit.

If you are not losing weight then you need first of all to look at what calories you are eating. If you are expecting to experience total appetite suppression and having to force yourself to eat as some people post on here, then your dosage is too strong and you are setting yourself up to fail (and potentially giving rise to an eating disorder) the moment you stop taking Mounjaro.

That makes perfect sense, thank you. I think because I’m feeling hungry sometimes I’m thinking it’s not working anymore, but it must be. I’m definitely in a calorie deficit and eating probably a quarter of what I used to. The ‘food noise’ has gone too. Thanks for the reply, it was very helpful and sensible advice 😊

@Stockpot1234 This is what I'm doing. Taking 2.5mg twice a week instead of 5mg once a week. I find that the positive effects wane from day 3 or 4 and splitting the dose helps to keep it steady in my system. Fortunately, the side effects are very low this way too. I plan to continue doing this and will only go up to 10mg (two 5mg a week) if it continues to go well.

lookathatbookcase · 24/09/2024 07:10

Those of you splitting the dose - how are you doing it and what needles are you using? I'd thought the Kwikpen 'locked' after a certain point and needed the hard twist, or am I misunderstanding? Would like to consider splitting as the side effects even on 3.75 once a week have been quite rough, whereas 2.5 was fine.

User7w727w · 24/09/2024 07:20

I count clicks. So 30 clicks gives half the dose. 60 clicks is a full dose. So I do 30 clicks (2.5mg of 5mg) twice a week, making it one full dose (5mg) a week. I have extra needles that I use each time on the pen.

If I go up to a 7.5mg pen, I'd still need to count 30 clicks to get half the dose, which is 3.75. If I go up to 10mg pen, I'd count 30 clicks to get 5mg. There's a chat somewhere for counting clicks to get different dosages but I'm doing half dose each time for now as it's working for me.

The hard twist is done after you've used up all 4 doses (roughly 60 clicks x 4), that's when you do the hard twist and get the bonus dose or use a syringe to get the dose out if you can't do the hard twist.

User7w727w · 24/09/2024 07:28

Chart, I meant; not chat.

You don't need to split or count clicks. A split dose is splitting a dose a week so you'd be taken it twice a week (some do 3 times or every 4 or 5 days) but that's not what you're saying, is it? You simply want a lower dose a week, not splitting a full dose to take more than once a week.

So if 2.5mg a week is good for you, you could just go down to a 2.5mg pen and use a full dose of that each week. If you're to use a 5mg pen and get a lower dose out of it each week (this is called microdosing, not split dosing), you'd go past the 30 days shelf life and still have some of the medication left in the pen.
