Hard twist

Could someone explain this to me in very basic words please? I had my fourth dose last week (well, eighth actually) and wouldn't mind getting the bonus dose out if I can

You can get an extra dose out, the pen feels like it won't turn all the way to 1 but if you keep trying with a firm hold it will.

However you probably have more than one dose left. If you want to use the extra bit (about a quarter or third of a dose) you will need an insulin syringe

BatFacedGirlll · 02/09/2024 21:05

Hello Tiger! It's your old penguin pal here!

Hard twist is just that. I was all confused at first but it's literally forcing the twist action until the pen literally won't go round any further. Teeth if you're like me and don't mind using them as tools Grin

You'll feel the pen kind of go slack at the end and then you'll know it's absolutely done

Some people talk about using extra needles to 'extract' the liquid but that all seemed complicated to me so I prepared pen as usual and added a needle as usual and then just force it to twist

I'm almost at the end of the journey now - good luck with yours!

TigerDroveAgain · 02/09/2024 21:18

Thank you both

And hello BatFaced!!! I was thinking about the penguin escapade only the other day and how bonkers it was!

Well done on your journey - I am a quarter of the way there aka 1.2 stone down, 3 and a half to go....

@TigerDroveAgain it certainly was bonkers! Ahh the memories eh?

Good luck with the journey - you'll be there in no time. I'm back to 10 st 7 now with about 8 lbs to go - started in April so it's not been too bad at all, time wise

RobinEllacotStrike · 03/09/2024 12:57

I tried a hard twist & broke the twist bit of the pen right off.

Anyone know what equipment I nned to buy to extract the last dose? I had a look on amazon but it was all very confusing.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 03/09/2024 13:33

@RobinEllacotStrike oh what a bloody nightmare! I bought these and they've been fine!

Xiaoxiong · 03/09/2024 13:38

I had to use a wrench to hold one side of the pen, and also do it with the cap still on to give me more purchase on it. So I did the hard twist and got it all the way out, and then took the cap off and screwed a needle on. I think I will just ask DH next time as he definitely has more hand strength.

Though perhaps not as strong as you @RobinEllacotStrike - that must have been so frustrating when it broke!

DappledOliveGroves · 03/09/2024 13:41

I didn't want to break the pen so I just bought some syringes from Chemist4U (like the ones linked above). I then injected the needle through the rubber, withdrew the dose and injected it. Super straightforward and nothing wasted.

RobinEllacotStrike · 03/09/2024 14:48

Thanks for the needle recommendations.

Is the 1ml size big enough to withdraw the remaining solution? I thought it would be more than 1ml left in there?

Also can you use one needle to withdraw the med, and then replace the needle before injecting it? Or did you use the same needle?

TIA!

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 03/09/2024 15:13

Yes, 1ml syringe is plenty. I think the most K have heard of people getting is 0.8ml.

I used the same needle to draw the medication and to one t. Don't honk you can change needles on these syringes. I made sure I cleaned the seal well.

RobinEllacotStrike · 03/09/2024 15:18

thank you - hopefully I'll have better luck getting that extra dose next time!

Snozzlemaid · 03/09/2024 15:24

Yes 1ml is plenty. A usual dose is 0.6ml.
The needles on the syringes are fixed on so just use the same one to draw and inject.
Good luck next time.

DappledOliveGroves · 03/09/2024 15:24

I only used one syringe - there was plenty of room to draw up the remaining liquid - and I then injected it straight in. I swabbed the seal (as I do with the needles provided anyway).

TigerDroveAgain · 05/09/2024 09:50

Well success with the hard twist - thanks for all the tips!

Thanks for the information and the link for the syringes. When I first started someone shared a link for extra needles to fit on the pens. Does anyone have a link for those please or a description for what I am searching for...still a newbie. Week 3 of my journey. Mumsnet has been a mine of information!

Azuresky68 · 11/09/2024 09:53

Please ignore my request for extra needles link. I looked in various places and found it in a list of helpful tips for newbies..link to the the external page is in the header of main thread Starting Mounjaro. Link is wattnext.notion.site/Pointers-for-Newbies-f069dca500354841a1b73f11f68158e2
