Am I daft to discuss starting Mounjaro with my GP?

Hey I know there are lots of Mounjaro threads but I'm hoping this one gets a wee reply or 2. I want to start Mounjaro, I've checked the interactions with 2 medications I am on, Quetiapine 50mg and Sertraline 150mg and there's no issues I can see. I have a Dr app next Thursday about my HRT issues and I also want to ask if she would support me on Mounjaro or at least check my medication interactions for reassurance.
My question is, if your GP is aware of your use of Mounjaro what was their opinion? I don't want to have it vetoed without them listening to my reasoning.
😊

You could ask the pharmacist about drug interactions. My gp is strict about one problem per appt so they wouldn’t discuss this in a HRT appt.

CormorantStrikesBack · 27/07/2024 09:38

And by support I’m assuming you mean just say it’s okay for you to take? You are unlikely to get it on the nhs, think you have to have done weight loss management clinics first. I can’t imagine any gp will say no don’t take it unless there’s a drug interaction or health condition contraindication. When you sign up you do a detailed health questionnaire which is checked by a doctor, they won’t prescribe it for you if you shouldn’t have it.

NippyCrab · 27/07/2024 09:38

I didn't think of that @CormorantStrikesBack, I will call and ask if I can have a note added to my appointment notes and maybe get a double appointment.

You won’t get a prescription for any weight loss medication on the NHS so your GP is unlikely to discuss it with you.

If you do decide to try it you will have to fill in an online consultation with which ever provider you decide to use and as part of that you will be asked what other medication you are taking and they will prescribe or not based on that information.

NippyCrab · 27/07/2024 09:40

I am not looking to get it on the NHS.

NippyCrab · 27/07/2024 09:43

@CormorantStrikesBack @Peridot1 do you have a provider you have been happy with more than any other? I just want to go the safest route.

@NippyCrab - I’m not using Mounjaro but am on Wegovy (although am going to switch to Mounjaro) and I’m currently using Boots. But they are not the cheapest. I’m going to research a bit and may change providers as I switch.

honkifyalikebeans · 27/07/2024 09:50

I tried to. The did a blood test to check obesity related health conditions. Turns out I'm
Pre diabetic so they offered me a support group for that. I tried to get their view on mounjaro but they just really didn't know about it (and I really rate our GP) so I would also suggest a pharmacist unless your GP knows you really well

Charlieiscool · 27/07/2024 09:58

My GP recommended it for me and said it was safe and it worked but he couldn’t prescribe it for me. It’s essential that you discuss this sort of decision with your GP even though you are paying for the Mounjaro.

NippyCrab · 27/07/2024 10:01

@honkifyalikebeans they don't know me well because I've switched practices a year ago. I think I am just worried about being stupid taking it. There are many positives to me taking it, I'm 52 and struggling with weight loss because of side effects with 2 meds and also a physical condition. I have NAFLD that I'm worried about, most of my weight is my tummy, and my hormones are working against my attempt to lose weight.

OP posts:
NippyCrab · 27/07/2024 10:02

@Charlieiscool thank you! I would rather it was on my records whether they have a positive or negative review of it, I just dont want to be negged out after my appointment.x

I don’t think you’ll need a double appointment OP, anecdotal evidence suggests that MJ helps with symptoms of menopause and menopausal weight gain, so you could ask about it in that respect?

There is some info on the effects of Wegovy and Ozempic re: menopause here.

Greyrockin · 27/07/2024 11:05

Can Menopausal Women Benefit From Weight Loss Drugs Like Wegovy and Zepbound?

Zepbound is another name for Mounjaro

Helenloveslee4eva · 27/07/2024 11:14

My gp so t comment on safety etc if they aren’t going to be scripting. That’s for the prescriber to advise you

NoTouch · 27/07/2024 11:19

Your prescriber will ask you detailed questions about your medical history to ensure you are suitable, some will inform your Dr, others will give you a letter to send to your Dr.

I personally wouldn't waste a NHS appointment someone else could use for a further discussion/another opinion, the prescribers are qualified, registered and more knowledgeable on this medication. Mention briefly at your HRT appointment to get it added to your notes, your Dr can tell you if another appointment to discuss is necessary.

FlappyFish · 27/07/2024 11:59

I can’t help on the Quetiapine interaction, but I’ve taken MJ for 5 months with Sertraline 150mg. When you request it they will ask about others meds.

honkifyalikebeans · 27/07/2024 12:04

@NippyCrab - I went because I was so anxious about taking it. I basically said to the GP that I was there in case they needed to tell me it was awful idea and I shouldn't do it.

I've been on it 2 weeks now. Honestly it's been life changing for me but I was nearly morbidly obese and just couldn't get my eating under control without it. I've chosen willingly to eat salad every lunch time since, it's been mind blowing!

CormorantStrikesBack · 27/07/2024 13:24

I’ve used both voy and medexpress and been happy with both. They both inform your gp(with your permission). So it’s on your medical records. My gp knows I’m on it and I’ve never told them.

NippyCrab · 27/07/2024 14:46

Thank you so much for all the replies. I'll have a read of that article now @Greyrockin I appreciate the link. @FlappyFish thank you, when i looked quetiapine up it said moderate interaction but so did sertraline, when I read further there wasn't anything significant that would make me not proceed so your comment is really helpful 😊
@honkifyalikebeans I'm 14st and 5ft 5 I ideally need to lose 4 stone but I'd be happy with 2 initially. My joints need it badly, I have osteoarthritis too. What side effects have you had. I've only read about the burping and nausea, which I can use buscupan and ginger or mint tea for. One article mentioned extreme fatigue and that's what I'm concerned about, I have Fibro and ME. Falling to bits over 50 😂
@CormorantStrikesBack I will take a note of the suppliers thank you.

honkifyalikebeans · 27/07/2024 14:56

So far (I'm only on the low dose of 2.5) I've had no side effects at all. I have mild health anxiety so I was really worried about taking it (I ordered it, then panicked and didn't take it for 3 weeks) but I've had no side effects so far

NippyCrab · 27/07/2024 15:12

Thank you, that makes me feel better. X

Useruserdoubleuser · 27/07/2024 15:23

OP I started at about the same. 14.2 and 5’6”.
Has been great. Few side effects and easy to lose weight steadily. Am in week 9 and 12lb down with no effort.

Alwaystimeforacupoftea · 27/07/2024 15:26

@NippyCrab I would let them know, or ask the prescriber to let the surgery know, you can usually tick this box when having it prescribed. That way if there are any issues or anything related in the future, they will know. Beyond that I don't think most GP's know a huge amount about the literature beyond what you could read yourself about drug interactions, so I wouldn't bother discussing it with them or letting them veto it. Share the information so that if you suddenly have to go to A and E, even for an unrelated matter, the info is on your patient record.

NippyCrab · 27/07/2024 18:43

Cheers m'dears I'm going to look at the suppliers and then order. I'll just mention to the GP I'm going on it x

I take Sertraline and have been fine, I don't take any hrt but have read mounjaro can help with menopausal symptoms.

I read the book 'magic pill' before I started, it was very insightful.

If you do decide to go for it I have a code for Voy with £85 off
