Mounjaro and underactive thyroid

AllTheBlackCoffee · 18/07/2024 09:30

Is anyone successfully losing on mounjaro with an underactive thyroid.

I am 14 stone and desperate to lose weight but I find it so difficult with my thyroid. I lose really slowly and basically have to stick to low carb to lose even an lb a month but as soon as I eat off plan it all goes back on and more. I just don't have the willpower to keep at it 24/7 with such little results.

I'm disheartened, hence looking to see if there could be another way so would love to hear if anyone with a thyroid condition has managed to lose this way.

Do they even prescribe to anyone with thyroid issues? I thought not

What is your BMI?

Me1987 · 18/07/2024 09:41

I'm on Saxenda because I preferred the idea of daily injections. I've lost 11.5lb in 5 weeks, started at 13stone. I have an underactive thyroid and on 50mg levothyroxine. I haven't been this weight for 5 years as I have struggled to lose weight

ToBeOrNotToBee · 18/07/2024 09:50

I have an underactive thyroid and have been prescribed mounjaro.
I am losing. Slower than some, but the scales are definitely shifting.

AllTheBlackCoffee · 18/07/2024 09:53

@OhHelloMiss if you have a history of thyroid cancer you can’t take it but I’ve not found anything to say they won’t prescribe with an underactive thyroid. I’m 5ft 3 and a bit so my BMI is about 33.

That’s useful info @Me1987 well done on your loss so far. I’m on 125 mg Levo daily. I suppose the only way to find out is to give it a go. I’m so fed up of being overweight and feel like I’m running out of options but similarly can’t afford to spend a fortune on this if it’s not going to work because of my condition.

Thanks @ToBeOrNotToBee good to know it’s working for you.

I have an underactive thyroid, on 75mcg of Levothyroxine. Mounjaro has worked better than I thought it would. I did put on the questionairre that I hypothyroidism, still was prescribed.

Down 12lb in just under three weeks...! I have been sticking to healthy meals and exercising, but it has been so much easier.

I've tried slimming world, weight watchers etc before and it was always tricky to lose weight.

CautiousLurker · 19/07/2024 21:27

I am hypothyroid and on replacement medication. Also been on wegovy/mounjaro for most of the last 15months and lost 5 st. A bit slower than others given the length of time I’ve been on it, I suppose, but am happily at BMI 28/12 st.

Think people confuse the family risk of thyroid cancer with hypothyroidism, which are not related at all.

Hiya,

Did you decide to start mounjaro? I'm also on 125mcg levothyroxine and cannot shift the weight. Really want to give it a try but quite anxious to start!

AllTheBlackCoffee · 15/09/2024 15:25

Hi @Trichford yes I did. I left it til I got back from holiday as I wanted to enjoy that but I'm now two and a half weeks in and losing ok. I've lost 9lbs so far, but some of that would have been plane/AI bloat after my holiday. But I've found it easier to stick to lower calories than I usually would. I was anxious too but I've not really had any side effects, if you give it a go, lots of water and eating 3 meals an day even if not hungry are my tips!

I’ve got hypothyroidism and am taking 175mcg thyroxine daily.
I started MJ in May and have so far lost 3 stone 2 pounds. I’m averaging 2.5 pounds per week but now I’m near to maintenance the loss is about a pound per week.

edited to add - it’s been a life changer for me!

Trichford · 15/09/2024 19:05

Thank you both so much! I’m away on holiday in two weeks so was thinking about starting afterwards. That is amazing losses you have both had!
I really have tried so much but just get nowhere with it, it’s so disappointing trying and getting no results!

Lumirubin · 15/09/2024 19:36

@Trichford it's honestly been a wonder drug for me. I started end of June and I'm 3st 2lbs down. I've had some side effects, but all manageable and worth it

Trichford · 15/09/2024 19:46

That sounds amazing! I have read that you need to take supplements etc, do any of you take anything extra?

Wishthiswasntmypost · 15/09/2024 19:49

Hypo...lost 14.5kg in 9 weeks. Also struggled to lose before

Sleepyquest · 15/09/2024 19:52

I am but losing pretty slowly. Nearly 2 stone off in 20 weeks

Pinkbendyman · 15/09/2024 20:40

I take a daily multivitamin and mineral tablet, 1 Omega 3 capsule and 2 Skin, hair and nail tablets (can’t have collagen as I’m vegetarian)

I’ve stopped eating processed foods, added sugar, refined carbs and ‘bad’ fats.

I’m not a big drinker but have the odd one occasionally.

I cook from scratch and aim for lots of protein, fruit and vegetables.

CautiousLurker · 15/09/2024 21:38

Hi, glad to hear some of you have braved it. I’m mid fifties/post meno (+PCOS and Hypothyroid) and I’ve lost just over 5.5st. I just have 7lbs to go until my BMI is 24.9. Been a longer route than others as I started on Ozempic when supplies were limited and it wasn’t that effective, esp remaining on 5mg doses for 4months and persevering with it for another 3m really slowed things down.

Mounjaro has been revolutionary for me. I don’t take any supplements, but do have a varied high protein diet with lots of salad/veg for fibre. All my blood tests indicate that my levels for everything are optimal now, so I don’t feel I need to. Oh, and I have the occasional gin and slim line tonic (went off pretty much all other alcohol).

As I say, my route has been slow, but I don’t seem to have ‘ozempic face’ (look ten years younger in fact) and not much else in the way of sagging skin. I don’t look 18 (LOL) but I’ve not had the folds of empty skin I was really scared of getting and which, if I’m honest, were putting me off losing weight before now - I kind of felt what was the point of all the effort only to still hate my body? But I don’t. I looked fine in a swimsuit on holiday recently, and have no back or knee pain, rarely get a migraine, anymore (now realise sugar levels were a factor).

best thing I ever did. Today I weighed less than I did when I fell pregnant with my eldest 20 years ago. 7lbs more and I’ll weigh the same as my wedding day 23 years ago. New wardrobe is costing me though…no more sainburys/Tu jeans and Tees for me!

Trichford · 15/09/2024 22:09

Wow everyone really has had amazing results, so happy for you all!
im really at the end of my tether and sick of hating the way I look and feel.
You have all gave me the nudge I needed, will be looking to get started once I get home!

Paulahoust · 10/03/2025 09:49

Hi how did you manage to get Mounjaro on prescription please? X

A natural pharmacist recommended metavive in addition to my thyroid meds.

seems to be highly recommended on certain forums.

I liked it
helped me to optimise my bloods rather than just fall into the “normal” range. I feel much better in the upper quartile for ft3 and ft4. Unfortunately U.K. docs don’t often aim for optimal tho.
hence metavive.

ObsidianTree · 23/04/2025 21:55

Missed this thread.

I started Feb 24 with an under active thyroid at 17st 6lbs and currently sitting at around 10st 7lbs. BMI under 23 and happily maintaining here using MJ.

For once in my life I can lose weight without having to restrict carbs/vlcds. The weight came off gradually but still very good. Between 2-4lbs weekly. (4lbs only happened occasionally) But point being, I feel like I lost in line with everyone else.

I didn't have a problem getting Mounjaro with my underactive thyroid. Zava, Asda, Oushk have prescribed to me no problem. Maybe others do no problem.

Main thing is I needed to reduce my meds once I got to a lower weight. So make sure you have blood tests regularly to keep on top of thyroid levels.

Please may I ask if anyone’s appetite suppressed very early on using MJ I’ve only had one injection 5 days ago 2.5mg but I’m still hungry, I’m defo calorie deficit, am I expecting too much too soon please? Patience has never been my forte 😂 any advice greatly appreciated
