Mounjaro - for steady losers

RunningAndSinging · 29/05/2024 16:28

I love the main continuing Mounjaro thread and have learned so much but it is so fast moving that it is sometimes hard to keep up with. I wonder if we could have a little splinter group for some of us who have been on Mounjaro for a while and the weight isn’t falling or hasn’t fallen off.

Maybe criteria of having been on it for at least 8 weeks so used or mostly used the 2.5mg and 5 mg pen and losing up to a maximum of 2 lb a week?

I have been on Mounjaro for 13 weeks (3 weeks on 2.5mg (2lb loss), 6 weeks on 5mg (6lb loss), 4 weeks of 7.5mg (5.5lb loss)) so a total of 13 5lb.

So close to the stone now - I will get there.

Planning to go up to 10mg next week. I did have a bit of vomiting last week and the week before but have been fine this week after my last 7.5mg so keen to go on up especially as I feel the losses are slower than I would like.

The changing numbers of weeks on each dose was because I used the bonus dose on my first pen to double up on week 4 and then used the bonus dose as an extra week at the end of each of the 5 mg and 7.5mg pens.

It would be great to hear from anyone in a similar journey.

Running - it was The London Slimming Clinic. I went from 0.5 W to 5 MJ because they sent out a general e-mail saying MJ might be the better choice for side effects, and Includi g a conversion table.

It may not have been their intention that clients switch without a break, but they fillled the prescription without comment. I have had no adverse consequences

RunningAndSinging · 10/06/2024 17:51

We have been moved over to the new board - yay! Thank you Mumsnet.

I am going out for a nice dinner tonight and considered not taking my dose this morning but decided that was a slippery slope. I feeling fine at the moment and hope I will be able to enjoy supper without indulging too much. I will avoid the bread basket as a good start.

RunningAndSinging · 11/06/2024 14:57

Well I got through my supper and enjoyed it in the whole although zi was quite full. Unfortunately I was sick at 5 am and haven’t been able to eat much at all today. Nis I have a migraine. Will haven’t watch this space fir the 10mg dose it is still early days.

I'm the same. Have lost 11.5lbs in 6 weeks. Not dropping off me like it is for some but still I am pleased.

Unsure whether to move up to 7.5mg or not

RunningAndSinging · 11/06/2024 15:29

How are your side effects @Sleepyquest ?
At the moment I am not planning going any higher than 10mg but it all depends on whether I get used to it and how the losses go.

OP posts:
Sleepyquest · 11/06/2024 16:21

@RunningAndSinging I had some strong nausea for 2-3 days after my first 2 lots of 5mg plus some heartburn but that's all. I can live with that.

Have you found 7.5 much better than 5?

RunningAndSinging · 11/06/2024 18:27

I have found that I have lost more quickly as I have gone up the doses but the side effects have been worse. It is hard to decide whether or not to go up. I bought the 10 based on the fact that I could count clicks to stay on 7.5 but haven’t done that so far.

Just crossed the 12st barrier so 11st something this morning. The 10 mg seems to be really working for me and I have another 10mg pen in my fridge now. I have been away a bit recently and on any other plan would have gained weight with the holiday feeling but it’s just not possible to eat that much on MJ. I have still enjoyed the food but not eaten as much of it.

ihatecoffee · 14/06/2024 07:06

I'm on week 12 and have gone from 13st 5lbs to 12st 1lb...so a loss of 18lbs.
It's been slow.

I was on Ozempic last year and lost nearly 2stone in three months however the side effects were horrendous. Constant D&V which actually at one point, caused me to have over two weeks off work. No side effects on Mounjaro other than feeling very cold and tired and one occasion of D but no V!

I stopped Ozempic in June as I couldn't get hold of it and started Wegovy but that had no effect whatsoever....so I stopped. 1.5 stone has crept back on...although in that time my mother died, and we had my birthday and Christmas so lots of alcohol!
Now I'm just 3-4lbs off my lowest weight and I'm desperate to get there plus an extra 1.5 stone.
10.5st is my target.
At 5'6" that for me will be perfect.
I'm on 7.5mg now and will go to 10mg but will probably stop at 10 as the food noise has gone, and although I'm eating so much less, I am eating more than I did on Ozempic so I can still enjoy my food albeit far smaller portions and very healthy!

I have the occasional desperate need for Haribos though! Talking to a GP friend of mine, she said my blood sugars are usually normal and Mounjaro will have lowered them...so naturally I'll get a craving for something sweet and sugary to counteract this. It's only every now and again and once I've had a handful I'm fine! Interestingly I'm not interested in cakes or biscuits...but then I never was!

RunningAndSinging · 14/06/2024 07:09

Ooh - interesting about the blood sugar. That makes sense. I have chocolate cravings every so often too - usually for Cadbury caramel specifically - I did think it was a bit strange when I am not often hungry.

Sorry about your mother.

It is frightening how quickly the weight can go back on when you stop. I was also on Ozempic and Wegovy and not yet back to the lowest Weight although I am now about the weight I was when I stopped just before Christmas. I dropped down to 0.8mg for around 2 months before I stopped and gained slowly over that time too.

Thank you so much. She was 90 and had Alzheimer's but although it was a blessed release for her, I'm still very much grieving.
Alcohol helped me....and whilst I'm no way an alcoholic, a glass of wine every night helped tremendously and of course then birthday and Christmas hit ....more alcohol!
When I drink wine, I want nibbles and I eat more!
So it's easy to see how the weight went back on...was over about 8 months I guess?

I still have a glass every now and again but the side effects are such that I couldn't drink more than one!!!

Onwards and downwards in weight I hope!

Femeia · 16/06/2024 13:46

@ihatecoffee sorry to hear about your mother. Mine died over a decade ago but I can't attribute my weight gain to that time as I've just put on weight ever since and never had the wherewithal to lose it (not that I didn't struggle before, just that I was able to stop the slide into obesity rather than just being overweight)

Really interesting about the blood sugar. My bloods are fine for diabetes, cholesterol etc but every now and then I get a real craving for chocolate. I've pretty much cut it out entirely since I started MJ but randomly I will just have to have a few pieces of chocolate.

Week 3 of 7.5mg and for the first time I had some sulphur burps and a bit of a reaction to eating the wrong thing (away with work so no control over my meals). I actually felt really glad, that it is doing something! I do hope that when I go up to 10mg that the appetite suppression kicks in.

I've now lost 61lbs since last January, 24 of those since starting MJ in February. Slow but steady. Although I did try on some outfits for a special occasion I've got coming up and they all looked hideous on me. So I'll be wearing an old outfit that is far too big now but at least is comfy and doesn't make me look like an overstuffed sausage!

Femeia · 16/06/2024 13:47

Sorry "can attribute" not can't!

ALongHardWinter · 16/06/2024 13:57

Does anyone know whether I'd be able to be prescribed Mounjaro if I've had a pulmonary embolism? (6 years ago). I am now on a blood thinning drug (Rivoroxaban). I tried to obtain Wegovy or Ozempic from an online clinic but was told I was unsuitable because of this. I'm not sure if I was refused it because of the pulmonary embolism or because it might interact unfavourably with the Rivoroxaban. I was offered Saxenda instead, but I tried that a couple of years ago and had to stop after 4 weeks due to the absolutely shattering lethargy and tiredness it caused. I had heard that Wegovy/Ozempic were less likely to cause this. Now I've heard about Mounjaro,I'm wondering whether I would be allowed it? I can't seem to find any definitive answer online as to whether it would be suitable.

littlemousebigcheese · 16/06/2024 14:13

I feel so depressed about it tbh. I've barely listened to anything, a few lbs max in over 6 weeks. I've been eating very little as I feel full and spoken to gp who said they might do some hormone blood tests just in case there's an issue but they don't understand why I'm not losing any weight either!

Some days I'm on 800 calories, some 1200 but nothing is going!! I'm so demoralised. The 2.5mg month I felt sick and achey and very full whereas the 5 hasn't felt different?

RunningAndSinging · 16/06/2024 17:35

@ALongHardWinter Best to ask the pharmacies if you can have it. Mounjaro has made some of us tired too but you can only try and see how you get on (assuming you are approved for it with your medical history)

@littlemousebigcheese sorry you are struggling. Hope the GPs can come up with an answer for you. Maybe the higher doses will help but if you are already eating so little it’s hard to imagine what difference it would make.

I am feeling tired and a bit sick as I stupidly got some chocolate raisins to eat in the cinema.

An annoying up for official weigh in day today. Although I generally do gain for Mondays and Tuesdays so will have to roll with it. I get so excited at the end of the week losses. Now showing a 900g loss for the two weeks I have been on 10mg so 1lb per week. Hmm.

I'm another slow loser who gets lost on the main thread as it moves so fast.

I've found that not wanting to eat meals is challenging, as it means I am more tempted to snack. I seem to remember this is how I gained so much weight while pregnant, so I need to make sure that I consciously eat meals with the protein. Also a vegetarian, so this means undoing years of bulking out on carbs.

Lentil soup with toasted tofu is going on my meal planner.

RunningAndSinging · 18/06/2024 07:23

It’s does remind me a bit of morning sickness. Not nearly as bad but yes I find the nausea is relieved by having something to snack on which probably won’t be helping the weight loss.

OP posts:
AcanthusFlower · 22/06/2024 11:16

@RunningAndSinging , thanks for the thread. I'm the same as you, 14lb in 14weeks and am now on 10mg. It is good to know that i'm not alone.

I am eating sensibly, no snacking, greatly reduced portions with lots of protein and very few carbs but definitely eating, unlike friends who say they are struggling to eat. I have no side effects at all except for low blood sugar, every afternoon I feel starving and desperately in need of carbs. This seems counter to everything else people have reported.
I saw someone else commenting on low blood sugar - any thoughts? Is there a connection between slow loss and LBSugar?
Thanks

RunningAndSinging · 22/06/2024 12:58

It’s frustrating isn’t it but you are still a stone lighter than you would have been. I don’t know about the low blood sugar theory but it makes sense with the afternoon cravings. I definitely get hungry too and and only had the odd day when I could hardly eat anything. This morning I weigh 200g more than last Saturday but at least my average line has dropped a bit.

I have my next 10mg pen so will be sticking with it for a total of 10 weeks. Don’t know whether to go up after that - I guess I have a good while to think about it and see if the side effects continue to settle (I wasn’t sick this week) and if the losses pick up again .

OP posts:
AcanthusFlower · 23/06/2024 09:40

Thanks @RunningAndSinging you are spot on and the 14lb has made a huge difference physically and psychologically after years of not seeing the scales shift, other than the wrong direction. It's a long game and I think it might take a year.

RunningAndSinging · 23/06/2024 16:04

Yes - it definitely is a long game. I would like to lose another 2 stone ideally and at 1lb a week that will take around six months from now. But that time will pass anyway and I may a well be moving downwards even if it is slowly. I don’t think I will be able to come off it though without a quick regain.

MoreThanJustANumber · 24/06/2024 14:32

It's nice to find this thread, I too am a slow loser. Been on MJ since beginning of March, now on 10mg, very few negative side effects but weight seems to fluctuate up and down for several days before a pound stays off.

It's a bit frustrating when you see people losing a couple of stone in the first month but overall I'm pleased with how much easier it is to eat less without the constant food noise. 23lb off in 18 weeks (was a bit more this time last week), but I think had I just continued as I was I'd be a few pounds heavier than my start weight.

I find I want to eat more at the weekend, possibly because I've got more time to think about food, and although there is less food noise I don't really have much appetite suppression so it is quite easy to have a bit more of something than I actually need. Maybe I need to change my injection day so it's stronger at the weekend? Currently injecting on Monday so I guess it's wearing off by the weekend.

I've not been brave enough to post my start weight, I'm too embarrassed, but suffice to say I'm here for the long haul as I have a LOT to lose!
