Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
https://glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress 2.5mg and 5mg. £149.99. 7.5mg £169. Use code STARTNOW. Ask for other codes if that doesn't work.
  • The Family Chemist 2.5mg and 5mg -£149. 7.5mg £169.
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. 7.5mg £189
  • Asda 2.5mg and 5mg £184. 7.5mg £189
  • Boots £219 +
  • Chemist4U £179 +
  • Superdrugs

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

Well I'm still feeling like shit, but in better news...

I AM NOW OFFICIALLY OVERWEIGHT!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

I can't believe it, the nurses were a bit worried when they heard a shriek from the bathroom! Now exactly 184lbs and BMI 29.8 .

I haven't smiled like this in a very long time. Those of you having doubts, go for it. You won't regret it!

A massive well done to you! Incredible news and milestone 👏 👏

Be proud of yourself!

Wonkypictureframe · 05/05/2024 09:09

@MelissaLouRocks well done!

I am 11.13.8! And it won’t last because I haven’t been well this weekend so couldn’t force down much food, so fully expecting it to go back over 12 tomorrow. But good to see it for today.

Abigailandthefoxes · 05/05/2024 09:24

Total newbie got my pen yesterday. Where is the best place to get spare needles and insulin needles for extraction?

Abigailandthefoxes · 05/05/2024 09:35

@MelissaLouRocks thank you so much for the advice and the warm welcome.

Is anyone on the Mounjaro/Wegovy support FB group. I was but had enough of the stupidity. Talk of reusing needles, faffing around with dosing, and throwing sharps in the household waste was the final straw. I appreciate that admin on these groups hadn’t maybe known it’d grow so big but it’s such irresponsible nonsense

Theyre awful, so much "I've only lost 5lbs in week 1, so disappointed" too

Brilliant! Hope it does stay off, breaking a stone barrier is always a great milestone.

Investinmyself · 05/05/2024 10:24

Well done @MelissaLouRocks what a boost when you are in hospital.
@Wonkypictureframe I've just done same and dropped to 12 stone 13.5 after over a week stuck at 13 2. Such a mental boost being in next stone bracket.

Beyondbeliefsometimes · 05/05/2024 10:45

Week 2 of 2.5 taken just before bed last night.
Week 1 weigh in today

SW: 186.8lb
CW: 181.8lb
TW: 140lb (this still doesn't get my BMI under 25 so may recalculate closer to the time)

I am delighted with week 1 and what I'm more so delighted with is that I am not reaching for food to celebrate my loss which I normally do. I have also eaten out for lunch twice this week, but I have been conscious to stop eating when full and left food behind which I would never do.

Excited to see what week 2 can bring. I do have things I need to work on. I need to up my water intake. I am still drinking a lot of fizzy drinks, although they are now sugar free instead of full sugar coke.

I have some actual hope I can do this! And am equally terrified of what happens when I get there.

I used voy to purchase my first pen, I am going to change suppliers, when would people suggest I order my next pen

spamm · 05/05/2024 12:05

Well done @MelissaLouRocks - that's amazing. Especially as you're having to work through hospital stays as well.

Lunab18 · 05/05/2024 12:18

I’m at the end of week 8 and have lost 1lb this week, total of 22lb in 8 weeks. 3 weeks until my holidays so really hoping I get to my 2 stone target for then.
Had awful nausea and sulphur burps this week, staying on 5mg for another 4 weeks.

lurkylurk · 05/05/2024 12:19

You're in the US aren't you? If you'd ever had British hospital food you'd know it's probably easier to lose weight there!

NCfor24 · 05/05/2024 12:29

Not checked in for a while as it moves too fast! I've just taken my 3rd 5mg dose...it was due Friday but I postponed as was working all day yesterday and was worried about possible side effects. Then I totally forgot to do it last night and have finally just remembered now! I don't have major appetite suppression but I don't have any cravings or a need to eat...literally some sensible food will deal with the hunger. I'm eating to satisfy real hunger not emotional need or sugar based cravings. It's still amazing and I can't believe I've stuck to something so long! I feel super positive and optimistic that I am finally going to lose this weight.
Slipped into the next stone bracket this week too, which is great!
The one thing that prompted me to do the dose just now is that I can feel my work based anxiety building...that fidgety unsettled feeling...work is stressful but MJ has kept me so balanced and calm, so I'm hoping that kicks in again soon!

SW 14st
CW 12st 11lb
GW 11st (interim target then will re-evaluate as I'll still be overweight...need to be sub 10st really)

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 05/05/2024 12:37

This morning i tried on some clothes and everything I've bought for this summer is far too big now so will have to be sold. It's a bit gutting as it's rare I treat myself to anything and I'd pretty much bought a whole new wardrobe of clothing as I'd finally accepted I'd be fat forever (size 20).

On the positive side, I can now fit into a fair amount of my old size 16s. It took me ages to get down to an 18 and now they're quickly becoming too big and I'm heading towards a 16.

In July I will be a godparent at a christening and tried my size 16 dress on. I can get it on but I need to lose at least half a stone to make it comfortable and more flattering. I'm sure I can do it in 2 months though.

wonderingwhatsnext · 05/05/2024 12:44

Thank you @MrsBurtMacklin my protein seems like a good website. Do your have a referral code for it? I think it would save us both money?

wonderingwhatsnext · 05/05/2024 12:46

That's great @PissedOffNeighbour22 I've had the same thing. Started as a 20. Ordered a few new T-shirts from m&s in 18s and there all going back to swap for 16s. I'm sure you'll look fab in your dress for the christening.

izzy2076 · 05/05/2024 12:48

Morning all

I am stupidly fixated on what's going to happen when I hit a healthy BMI. I'm worried I'm going to get dumped by my provider when I want to taper down slowly. I've emailed my prescriber again, but according to the FB forums all prescribers are being deliberately vague about it.

My slip into obesity I'm pretty sure is age related (I'm 50) and protein and exercise are two things I was doing anyway. I have been lifting heavy weights 4x a week since my thirties. I need a reset when it comes to reducing calories, as I did eat too much but I think it's going to be a huge struggle as despite being a teetotalling, active, protein swilling lifter of weights, I still slipped into BMI 31. I think I may need some sort of input until I'm through the other side of menopause. Does anyone else feel the same?

Edited

It's a good job I can use the kitchen, or I'd waste away completely! I bring my protein pre mixed with collagen etc so I can just add milk, ice, and blend. I can cook eggs here and there's an Aldi opposite, and a volunteer usually offers to pop over when I'm in. The hospital's awful, but most of the staff are very understanding thankfully.

Well done everyone on your losses, sorry I've struggled to keep up. And thank you so very much for all your congrats for the loss, and best wishes for my health, it means a lot from each and every one of you. 💐

Waiting for my bloods.... I may be lucky enough to escape this afternoon, everything crossed!!

spamm · 05/05/2024 12:53

@lurkylurk - I had my son in the Uk by caesarean 19 years ago, so I have an inkling. I used to make my husband bring me bags of Mini Cheddars so I could eat those while breastfeeding - my only real craving, and I could finally eat them after he was born, as I had Gestational Diabetes and had to restrict all sorts of food during pregnancy.

But I was also thinking about the lack of sleep and rest, lack of opportunity to exercise (even just a nice walk). I just spent 3 days with my parents who live 3 hours away, because my dad had an operation on his spine. I was sat in hospital with him and my Mom Thursday- Saturday and it just reminded me of how little peace you get in there.

Yes that’s me (slightly less gym) Implication we were all clueless and eating junk before mj and if we just cc and exercise we’d lose is so wrong. I’d also hit bmi 31 despite trying. No one knows yet where cut off will be. I’d hope there will be some sort of maintenance dose, it’s in drug companies interest as they will sell more.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 05/05/2024 13:46

Thanks @wonderingwhatsnext. Congrats to you too. It's such a good feeling isn't it 😄

I think I'm finally down to the weight I was when I met my partner 6yrs ago which I'm really happy about.

ObsidianTree · 05/05/2024 13:55

Congrats @MelissaLouRocks and any other losses today and yesterday

Good luck to all new starters

@Investinmyself I feel you're my spirit animal on here as our starting BMI, age (I think) and start date are very similar. Now I sound like a stalker!

izzy2076 · 05/05/2024 14:11

@Investinmyself yes I totally agree. My heart sinks when prescribers say 'we hope you'll be able to adapt to a healthy lifestyle after mounjaro.' I can hand on heart say my lifestyle was a lot healthier than a lot of women on my age. The hormones just aren't on my side. Evidence being: weight pile on from the age of 48 and starting HRT. I also know I can't be one of those 1000 calories per day people as I'm too active and like my food too much.

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 05/05/2024 14:12

I've got it but I'm scared to start. Long term IBS-C, and trying to sort the constipation before starting Mounjaro. Has anyone dealt with this, or had particular problems with constipation on MJ? 🙏
