Have I chosen the wrong wedding dress?!

I'm having a wedding dress freak out.

I bought this mermaid style wedding dress, at the time I loved it...now I'm looking back on the pictures and panicking that I look fat. The more I Google my body shape (rectangle) - the more the Internet tells me to avoid mermaid dresses.

Honest opinions please on whether you like it or not? Do i look fat? Does it suit me?! Aghhhhh. Thanks x

Rectangle shape?! Don't be daft! You aren't no rectangle!

Now I'm very honest with anything wedding dresses because I think every bride deserves to have information prior to commitment on what people think so if I had negative feedback, you'd get it, but from a place of kindness.

You and that dress are made for one another, the dress is utterly beautiful and suits you perfectly! Get an all in one suckyinnythingy underneath (that is the technical term I believe!) And also invest in that thigh chafing cream or even wear a long all in one, mermaid dresses will have thighs chaifing even if you had wee chopsticks for legs!

But the dress is absolutely lovely! You definitely made the right choice!

BlueFlint · 25/07/2024 21:54

Oooh what I wouldn't give for your FABULOUS figure! The dress is beautiful OP, you will look wonderful. Sure a few tweaks can be made if you don't feel 100% confident.

For what it's worth, I wore the least sexy imaginable full body-sausage shapewear under my wedding dress - it's always an option but I truly don't think you'll need it!

SirChenjins · 25/07/2024 21:57

It’s a gorgeous dress - you look absolutely stunning! You’re definitely not a rectangle, you have a lovely hourglass figure which really suits the dress. It’s a bit tight as you said but nothing that can’t be sorted and I would go with a little matching lace shug if you can to balance out the amazing train and lower section of the dress - the spaghetti steps just feel a little unbalanced imo.

It's a touch tight, but you've already addressed that.

Apart from that, it's a lovely dress, and you look great in it.

Not sure what you mean by a "rectangle" body shape, I'd say you're somewhere between hourglass and pear shaped, which is about as far from a rectangle as you can get!

Thank you - it's the corset on the inside...its clearly worked wonders in changing my shape 😂

You look more of an hourglass body shape to me, not rectangle. I think it looks like a dream dress to be honest! Keep it!

PennyPugwash · 25/07/2024 22:15

Slightly too small at the moment, but you've address this.

Tbh I think the straps are a bit redundant. Either remove them entirely or have some of the lace added to make a broader strap.

LesleyA · 25/07/2024 22:20

I think you have a beautiful shape and this style dress shows that shape but doesn’t make the most of it as it makes your hip/stomach dominate and you should have style that shows your lovely waist but then washes away the wider part. It kind of makes one look at the part that you don’t need attention. Even made bigger I dont think this dress would be the best dress for you and I think it should be a shade lighter to contrast your skin more. You want to be confident not holding yourself in it.

Noseybookworm · 25/07/2024 22:21

It's a lovely dress and you don't look fat but it's definitely a little tight. Hopefully it can be altered and you will be more comfortable in it. You want to be able to breathe and enjoy your special day to the full 💐

Badatmostthings · 25/07/2024 22:29

I think a shrug or bolero would add a really great touch. I am a similar shape and loved my dress but felt conscious of my shoulders looking too broad so I added a shrug and honestly it made all the difference.

I agree with this exactly. If you don't feel right/comfortable in the dress, change it for one that you love. You have plenty of time.

Beautiful3 · 25/07/2024 22:48

Dress is really beautiful. It looks tight across the hips, and the back looks too small. Wedding is next year, I'd aim to lose a stone, to look better in it.

Adhdmumofadhdtwins · 25/07/2024 22:51

Please don't put yourself under pressure to lose weight just to fit in a dress. Such an awful, damaging message that society gives to brides.

A seamstress can alter it. Alter the dress, not yourself.

You aren't a rectangle?

That is definitely a defined waist!

This.

It's possibly slightly right across the middle, but underwear or minor alterations should take care of that.

Lopine · 26/07/2024 00:12

No idea how I got into the wedding side of mumsnet, but whilst I’m here.. you look gorgeous 💐 and with the alterations others have said, it will be perfect

Thank you - I think it is my belly hanging over 🫣. 2 kids, I'll say no more. Hopefully diet and shapewear will fix it

It can't be that. It looks like a crease or a line. If you say you need to size up it might just be how that size need to be sitting differently. Either way it looks lovely. Possibly needs a good steam from being hung up in the shop

Nsky62 · 26/07/2024 00:41

I agree, the spaghetti straps aren’t doing it for me. I would embellish them somehow.

That's not your belly causing that line. It's where the dress has an underlayer and it's not been pulled down properly where the corset ends, so it's slightly bunched. The dress shop should have pulled it down from the bottom to smooth it out. Once it fits you properly, that line won't be there - it's not your body that's a problem.

Thank you everyone - all points taken on board 🙌 xx

Haha thank you- chaffing cream is something I hadn't even considered 😳🤣🤣 this is absolutely going on the shopping list xx

Don't wear a shrug you'll frump it up massively. Alerting should be fine.

SirChenjins · 27/07/2024 12:53

A little matching lace shrug will not frump it up at all - it will work really well with that dress shape. Alternatively add wider straps in a sort of pleated lace - or a halterneck might work.

Badatmostthings · 27/07/2024 21:05

This isn't me (I wish it was!) found this after a Google but this is very similar to the bolero/dress I had. I think in February having a sleeve and something over your shoulders will make you feel great and less exposed. Can take it off for the disco later!
