Engagement rings

Hi all,
I need a bit of help! My partner has asked me to marry him and I'm getting my ring on Saturday. I can have up to 1 carat diamond ring. But he has stated that 1 carat is going to be too heavy for me to wear every day? If I want 1 carat I'll only be able to wear it on special occasions etc. Can any one advise on the perfect size because obviously I want to show it off and wear it every single day! I want some thing that is going to be comfortable and not something that I'll constantly be having to take off and put back on!
Thanks xx

Also bear in mind how big your hands are, the rings will look different on. I thought I knew what I wanted until I tried them on! Go in with an open mind.

This is mine. I have no idea what it is. I didn’t choose it, my OH did from samara james at Hatton garden.
I’ll let you know when I get home. He said he did a lot of research into the 4 C’s

I wear a plain 2 carat platinum solitaire everyday and do housework, paint, draw and run wearing it. A 2 carat round is only just over 8mm in diameter, 1 carat is around 6mm, so we are not talking doorknobs. The setting is far more important than the carat weight if you want to wear it all the time, an ornate, high setting is a lot more vulnerable and likely to catch than a low set stone in a plain shank. Mine’s in a low cathedral setting so fabric tends to glide over rather than catch. My ring never annoys me. The Tiffany setting is a lot more “sticky-uppy”

  • a cathedral setting has shoulders buttressing the set diamond.

Mine is 1ct total. Never take it off. I love it.

This shows how different the same carat diamond can look in profile depending on setting. Obviously the ring on the left is much more likely to spin and catch than the one in the right.

I think the issue is more how it's set, but even then you get used to it. Mine is quite high set so fluff often gets caught around it but you get used to being more careful so as not to bash it. They're more robust than you think. Mine is platinum and I'm not especially careful. The jewellers do a free check and clean for me every year and haven't had any issues yet.

bluesky45 · 13/09/2018 13:47

Make sure you try lots of sizes in. I thought I wanted a big diamond, as big as we could afford! But in the end, I went quite a bit smaller as the big ones didn't look as nice on me as some of the smaller ones. Mines 0.3 but it's so sparkly and the setting is so simple that it works really well.

UnfinishedSenten · 13/09/2018 13:55

I love yours! @LightDrizzle

I've got a 1.5 carat Portuguese cut solitaire. Not heavy or big at all.

How did the shopping go OP?

toomuchtv88 · 15/09/2018 16:47

Hello! Don't want to out myself but have a special interest in diamonds as part of my families business :-)

I don't think you'll have an issue with 1 carat but an engagement ring is so personal that the only way to know for sure is go try some!

Some people come in and find 1 carat is perfect and others want more! Some people just want what looks the biggest and most dazzling but my advice to you so you get the most for your money is to look at cut, clarity, colour and carat :-)
Don't want to sound like a snob or a judgemental cow but I have a friend who always brags about her huge ring her dh got her and compares it to another friends much smaller carat ring. I have to keep my mouth shut as I know that actually her ring is much less valuable!!!

Each to their own! An engagement ring is such a sentimental piece if you're like me you don't really care what it is as the meaning of it makes it invaluable!

toomuchtv88 · 15/09/2018 16:49

Gosh sorry what a waffley post I've done! I'm trying to distract myself from pregnancy woes and my mind is all over!

ALC03 · 18/09/2018 13:53

Thanks for all the great advice.
Haven't picked it yet! Went to look at some on Saturday and just couldn't make my mind up so I didn't want to just choose anything! So we will be going to another store this week.

X

Mine is this one from beaverbrooks.
As pp have said, the setting is important - I looked for ages to find one that didn't stick up too far.
It is a small diamond, (0.26 c) but I wanted something I'd feel comfortable wearing every day, and don't want it to be the first thing people notice about me (didn't want the ring wearing me lol).

Slightly different OP but my DH had been married before and thought all women want a huge white wedding.

I stated the bleeding obvious and said - no, they don’t and I am not All Women.

In your shoes I would tell him something along the same line, but in your own words. Put bluntly, what she did with her engagement ring is completely irrelevant to you and him.

ALC03 · 24/09/2018 17:04

Thanks all. You've been a great help and definitely made this process more fun and relaxed! X

God, it's beautiful.

Thatstheendofmytether · 27/09/2018 07:42

This is mine, I can't remember what carrat it is, I just wanted to take a picture 😂.

Just go try some on, you will find something you like and I'm sure people wear 1ct everyday. Tell you dp you are not his ex wife.

That’s huge, Lightdrizzle! Is it diamond or is it a moissanite?

Mine is 0.6 carat. I’ve got size i fingers though so it still looks fairly sizeable.

I don’t think you can tell anything until you start trying them on. Enjoy!

RainbowsArePretty · 27/09/2018 08:11

Lightdrizzle your ring is stunning!

Lonecatwithkitten · 28/09/2018 15:56

Also have a really good think as well about what you would like to wear for the rest of your life. First time round trilogy ring 1.5 carats in total it was lovely, it was stolen and then ExH had an affair.
Second time round we have designed a ring we have designed a run over setting so it doesn't catch on things, that is two rings intertwined ( the two of us) surrounding an oval apple green sapphire with two diamonds in the shoulders.
