Engagement rings

Hi all,
I need a bit of help! My partner has asked me to marry him and I'm getting my ring on Saturday. I can have up to 1 carat diamond ring. But he has stated that 1 carat is going to be too heavy for me to wear every day? If I want 1 carat I'll only be able to wear it on special occasions etc. Can any one advise on the perfect size because obviously I want to show it off and wear it every single day! I want some thing that is going to be comfortable and not something that I'll constantly be having to take off and put back on!
Thanks xx

Try them on then decide Smile

YeTalkShiteHen · 13/09/2018 08:22

Lots of people I know have large engagement rings and wear them every day. My Mum’s engagement ring (horrid big family heirloom type thing) was 4 carats in total and she wore it until she died.

If you’re happy to wear it, what’s the problem?

3stonedown · 13/09/2018 08:24

It wont be too heavy at all. You would get used to it after about a week. But try them on and see what you love.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 13/09/2018 08:25

Loads of people where 1ct every day, it’s really not that big. Just try them on and see.
But there’s a lot of variation in a carat - do your research on the 4 C’s before you go shopping.

Lucky you. 1 carat will not necessarily be big.

Ceeeeeelia · 13/09/2018 08:27

Why has he 'stated' what you can wear?

Mine is just over 1c, and I wear it all the time. It's no fuss at all. Try a few on and see what you like.

But Don't focus on the size. You can get really poor quality 1 carat diamonds that don't sparkle at all. I'd much prefer a smaller stone with better clarity and colour, for the same price.

MarthasGinYard · 13/09/2018 08:31

How does he know?

That's rubbish

Has he seen how small the diamond will still actually be

Not being tight is he Grin

ALC03 · 13/09/2018 08:45

He's said because he has been married before his ex wife couldn't wear here every day because the 1ct felt too big and heavy for her. But I've looked and it seems most people have 1-2 carat and have no issues with wearing it daily! Will definitely look at 4 C's did you all have a style in mind before you went to the store? Or was it a case of picking a few out that you liked and just trying them?

I knew I wanted a princess cut solitaire but if you don't have your mind made up already just enjoy the experience of trying on lots of different styles. Congrats on your engagement.

kenandbarbie · 13/09/2018 09:14

I wear one carat every day, not heavy at all Smile

kenandbarbie · 13/09/2018 09:16

I thought I wanted three stones, but when I tried them on a single stone suited me much better.

ALC03 · 13/09/2018 09:16

Yes I know I want a princess cut also!
Thank you all for your help!

He sounds an absolute treat already telling you what you can and can’t have and all with comparisons of his ex wife. You sure you’re ok with a lifetime of that?

TheGateauIsInTheChateau · 13/09/2018 09:26

Congratulations on your engagement :)

1 carat is lovely and much above the average so you are lucky to have that.

If size is important (carat is the weight) look for a shallow, wide diamond. Also think about your setting as you will find it annoying if your ring has a raised setting and you’re constantly getting it caught on knitwear etc...

Have fun!

Threeminis · 13/09/2018 09:34

When I first started wearing mine, it did feel too heavy - but, I honestly think it was because I had never really worn a 'big' ring before. Now I don't even notice it (been married four years so maybe been wearing my engagement for five) I really notice if I don't have it on.

Sorry, that was a really long winded way of saying get what you want!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 13/09/2018 09:58

These are mine. Engagement ring is 1 carat. Not at all heavy.

Sorry I'm not after negative comments or advice on mu relationship... He hasn't told me I can't have. He is just telling me not to go with what my eyes see as the biggest and brightest but to think about it for the every day practicality and if I'll be able to wear it every day unlike his ex wife that could only wear it for special occasions. Not that he is comparing his ex wife to me. Thanks for the judgement though!

One carat. Feels heavy if you are just holding it but doesn’t feel heavy on my finger. I wear it every day

ALC03 · 13/09/2018 10:33

They are all stunning! Even the 0.5ct are a good size! Thank you for sharing with me all x

Mine is 0.90 of a carat with 0.25 on the sides. I love it. It's not to heavy for me.
I've never taken it off.

Mine is a cluster (Princess Di style), it has a 1.2ct sized sapphire centre stone with 10 diamonds around it (totalling 1ct of diamonds). Because of the way it is set it looks quite large, but I still wear it every day with no issue at all, and absolutely love it. A friend (whose hubby is a stockbroker) has a beautiful 4ct
solitaire, which she wears most of the time, just not swimming/at the gym. I think you should pick the one you like the best (that is in budget) and not worry at all about the weight.
