Could I alter this dress?

Hi all, some advice needed on altering wedding dresses please!
So I tried on a lovely dress a couple of weeks ago (pic 1 is me wearing it). It's a morilee dress (pic 2 is the "official" picture of it).
Problem is, it's way too expensive - £1500. - I could afford it but don't want to pay that much for something I'll wear once lol.
Anyway I've found a similar thing on jjshouse.co.uk (pic 3) and I'm thinking a good seamstress could alter the neckline to be like the morilee one (although not quite as low preferably).
What do you think? Is this reasonable? I appreciate it won't look exactly the same but nearly?

I think that will be ok for a good seamstress to do. I've had my neckline altered (had similar sheer neckline) and it's worked really well. No idea how they do it, obviously very talented as you can't tell it's not the original neckline. So I'd say go for it.

If you're worried maybe get in touch with a couple of seamstresses and see what they think? Check the cost too. I've paid £200 for alterations but that was through the shop I bought the dress from.

Would find some reviews for websites like that dress looks to cheap for 200

labcat · 25/03/2018 12:08

JJ's house dress will look nothing like that picture. Trust me.

Parentingissotough · 25/03/2018 12:14

Have you tried still white? I got pressured into buying a dress I didn’t like and then didn’t have the cash to buy another new one. I bought a gorgeous one on still white and had it customised and altered (about 200) and it was so worth it. I would recommend this fair more than an online purchase. A friend of mine pairs 100s for 2 that were unwearable from different sites. Good luck

thanks for the replies!
I've been looking at preloved, still white, ebay etc, but not seen anything I like - I'm pretty fussy.
I think JJs sound ok, they have very good reviews on all their dresses, with pictures. Also my second cousin got her dress (and bridesmaids dresses) from there and it was fine. It was too big but that was kind of her fault as she left it too late to get it altered.

have you used them @labcat?

I thought jjs house was a Chinese site like you see in the DM every other week. What people ordered and what they received. I wouldn't.

Have you looked at high street wedding dresses or outlets for something more in your price range.

emsyj37 · 25/03/2018 12:54

It won't look the same, feel the same or fit the same. I wouldn't. You will end up disappointed.

UncomfortableBadger · 25/03/2018 15:49

Have you had a ring round other Morilee stockists locally to see if any have a sample dress you can buy?

My dress is a Morilee (the 3183 Grin) and although it was £1500+ new, the shop actually offered to sell me the sample dress for £500 seeing as it fitted nearly perfectly.

Presume you’ve also checked eBay and Gumtree? Lots of bridal shops will sell off their samples via eBay when they get near the end of the season.

Hellywelly10 · 25/03/2018 15:53

Please dont buy a dress from a chinese website. I did it once (never again).

Bluntness100 · 25/03/2018 15:58

They are in Hong Kong. They can easily fake their own reviews. I would not be keen to buy from them. In fact I would do everything I could to avoid it.

My niece ordered her dress from JJ House last year & the dress was fine. It looked like the picture & she had it altered slightly. It didn't have an internal corset like other wedding dresses but she didn't need one.

Emma198 · 25/03/2018 16:04

This one not dissimilar and you could try it on too www.wed2b.co.uk/eliana

seven201 · 25/03/2018 17:12

I bought my wedding dress through putting a wanted ad on preloved. A bridal shop got in touch and sold me their sample.

Cliveybaby · 25/03/2018 23:43

Thanks @Emma198 I've seen that one before and it's nice except for the back - I really want my back covered because I don't like it!

Didn't know you could do that @seven201, thanks!

Hmm I'm still erring on the side of ordering the cheap one... but speaking to a seamstress first.
reasons:

  • If I didn't get it made to measure I could return it. (I've ordered something else from them that didn't fit and they wouldn't refund as I left it too long but sent me a gift voucher for almost the whole cost).
  • If it's a disaster, I have lots of time to find something else (wedding in december)
  • I am currently losing weight, so would need to get it altered anyway.

Well if anyone's still following this I ordered the cheap one a couple of weeks ago. Decided since the wedding's not till December I've got time to find something else if it's a disaster! Should arrive in 5-8 business days!

Oh please update us, hope the dress is okay for you.

Fluffyears · 06/05/2018 14:29

Hope it is as good as the picture,

Cliveybaby · 07/05/2018 14:56

Will update I promise! I hope it's good!
Wish it'd hurry up...

Pim on my phone, so the pictures are small. I can’t see what you want to change about the necklines, they seem very similar.

Cliveybaby · 07/05/2018 16:53

The JJshouse one has a sheer neckline that kind of covers the cleavage area IYSWIM... I want to get it cut away to be just an open V neck

If it doesn’t work out, I’m on a Facebook group called China wedding dresses - success stories - you should take a look as it shows the good sellers and who to avoid.
