I went to Cyprus (Paphos) for my first honeymoon, and then in April this year, DP and I took the DC to Ayia Napa for a week. It was bloody beautiful (out of the wanker season, obviously :o ) and we'd go back like a shot. I love Cyprus and the flight is only 4 hours.

OP posts:
memphis83 · 26/10/2012 22:53

toby the shorter flight is what appeals. The mil goes every year. We were originally going to get married there but then dp went from wedding with just us to wanting a 'proper' wedding.

louiespence · 27/10/2012 08:09

Ooh can I join the wedding thread? I am not sure what a quiche is?!

I don't have a date for our wedding yet as we've only been engaged for a month and I really need to get some ideas! It all came as a bit of a shock as we've been together for 14 years and have 2 DC, so I had sort of given up hope of ever having a wedding! I would like to do something fairly simple and within the next year, so cheap too as limited time to save up!

Am interested to hear that a couple of you are in Leicestershire, as that's where we are! Are there any particular Leics venues I should look at/avoid?

Also Vivipru I think it was you that linked to the wedding dress you bought at TKMaxx - do they have wedding dresses in their shops or did you buy it online? I absolutely love the dress and it is a fantastic price! I had a look on their website but couldn't find anything.

ViviPru · 27/10/2012 08:43

Hi louie, welcome! Yes mine was the TK Maxx dress. As far as I'm aware, they tend to bring out bridal stock in early spring, and when it's gone it's gone. They've not had any bridalwear since abut July. I bought my dress online in April, I think they probably bring the range out around feb-march time. There was quite a big selection when I got mine.

I really struggled for interesting Leicestershire venues, ones we considered were Halstead House, Scraptoft Farm, Bosworth Battlefield and Rearsby Barn. There is also the Cedar Field if you want a completely blank canvas.

Not much help unless you fancy a farm-style wedding though!

TobyLerone · 27/10/2012 09:52

Hi louie :)

Congratulations on your engagement. You've come to the right place!

We're going to Canterbury to pick up our rings today. 11 weeks to go

Hi Louie.

I reckon you could utilise the advice on this thread, get a late availablity deal and beat us all to it. It doesn't take as long to plan a wedding as people will tell you. Mine is almost done and I've got 46 weeks to go.

TobyLerone · 27/10/2012 10:13

It definitely doesn't take as long as people say. We got engaged in August and we're just twiddling our thumbs now. Everything's done and we wish we'd made it sooner.

memphis83 · 27/10/2012 13:12

Louie Welcome, where about in Leics are you? what sort of ceremony do you want?

toby I have been engaged 6 months and I am nearly done with my planning with 16 months to go! Grin It really only takes ages if you want it too, the night after we got engaged we went to our local as the landlord had a bottle of fizz and a meal for 2 as a present for us and we had picked the venue by looking online and there where two couple on the table next to us, one had been engaged 2 weeks and had seen 10 venues, all their ideas and planning made my head spin!

The teatowel came today and it is fantastic, it was even in the design I think we will go for, I got all excited and dp was chuffed with it too, really lovelt and great quality, was expecting the printing of the small writing not to be good but it is clear as day!

ViviPru · 27/10/2012 14:53

OOoh Louie could be my second witness along with memphis... it's all coming together!!

memphis83 could you link to where you got the tea towels from? i wasn't sure if y ou had already linked to it, but i can't seem to find it my brain isn't working

memphis83 · 27/10/2012 21:55

I didn't link as I don't know how to but its up thread but I put into google wedding tea towels and it came straight up.

louiespence · 28/10/2012 07:40

Wow, thanks for all the welcomes and the positive comments about planning a wedding in a short time!! Smile

Those venues look great ViviPru I hadn't considered anything like that, but they look much more original than the ones I had found on the net, Quorn Hotel, Rothley, Mariott etc! Am going to have a good look later! Thanks for the tip about when the TKMaxx dresses go on sale too, how do you know all of this Grin?

Memphis I'm towards the west of the city in Kirby Muxloe, and available as a witness any time anyone needs me, it would be great!

Off to google wedding teatowels!!!!

memphis83 · 28/10/2012 07:54

louie not too far then. I said up thread but if you didn't see it there is a wedding fair next Sunday in the City Rooms.

ViviPru · 28/10/2012 10:22

I live just by Quorn and Rothley, louie, they're nice enough venues but pretty expensive for what you actually get and restrictive in terms of food/drink options.

I know you all probably think I'm batty about this witness thing, but in all seriousness, it's the one aspect of the wedding we're struggling to find a solution to.

We're signing the register and saying the minimal legally required lines at county hall in the morning, just DP and I and two witnesses. Ideally, we don't want these witnesses to be anyone who will be at the full ceremony on the farm later on. We're really stuck though as everyone we know is going to be at the wedding! We have considered asking neighbours, but they might think its a bit weird. We also thought about asking strangers off the street but we're quite tight for time and it's a bit of a risk if we can't find anyone and end up running up and down the ringroad desperately searching for someone!

Some one 'from the internet' would be ideal, reliable but anonymous enough. Plus DP and I met on a chat forum so it would be strangely fitting somehow!!

memphis83 · 28/10/2012 10:49

vivi in all seriousness I would be there in a flash! Didn't this happen on mn a while ago where they had witnesses from on here?
The reason we picked our reception place was our neighbours run it and they tailored it to our needs so even though from the outside its not amazing to look at from the outside we can do a lot with it so many venues were expensive but you couldn't decorate it how we wanted. The photos online of ours is shocking with rubbish 80's chairs but it looks great done for a wedding.

ViviPru · 28/10/2012 11:27

Right well there's every chance I'll take you up on that. I'll keep you posted!

TobyLerone · 29/10/2012 11:14

I'm going to WeddingPlannerZilla's in a bit to make table decorations and sort-of-favours.

The fun never starts Hmm

OP posts:
bulletwithspookybatwings · 29/10/2012 11:16

What are you doing for favours Toby? I'm thinking of making mine, to save money.

TobyLerone · 29/10/2012 11:25

We're not really doing favours, as such. They're always shite, IME. And we're not having a table plan, so it would be difficult to assign one per person.

We're making little pots of herb plants (rosemary, mint, thyme) to decorate the tables, and will attach a little label to each telling people to take one with them when they go home.

OP posts:
RedGreenRouge · 29/10/2012 11:40

Ugh, favours. We want to invite a fairly large number of people so favours would be ridiculously expensive on top of food and alcohol. What would you make, bullet?

And, speaking of alcohol, are you all buying your own? The 'deals' that venues offer add up to quite a lot for not very much alcohol.

littlemissstan · 29/10/2012 11:42

We're not having favours - I really fail to see why after spending a load on food and drink for everyone they should get a present as well! We have bought some Cancer Research pin badges for DP's brothers and sister to wear (plus us) - their mum died some time ago from pancreatic cancer so it's a way of having her there, sort of. Children will get a little bag with crayons, stickers, bubbles etc but it's less of a favour, more a way of (hopefully) keeping them quiet during speeches etc. The only other thing I had thought of was a bottle of my (home-made and totally lush) blackberry vodka on the table, with shot glasses for everyone, so they could all share - but again not really a favour!

bulletwithspookybatwings · 29/10/2012 12:18

I was thinking of making sweets, truffles or sparkly Jazzies, or maybe soaps. I agree favours are usually shite!
At our venue the corkage is too much for us to take our own booze. So we're only providing one glass of sparkling wine with the canapes then 2 glasses of wine with the meal and no toasting fizz. The bar will be there all day though, so if people want more they can buy their own!

We're having the canapes instead of a starter to save money too. The ceremony will be at 2pm so I really don't think anyone will want 3 courses as well as canapes and an evening buffet between then and 11pm.

bulletwithspookybatwings · 29/10/2012 12:19

The herb pots are a cute idea Toby :)

ViviPru · 29/10/2012 12:24

My Mum is making spiced apple chutney for favours. It won first prize in our village show so it comes highly commended! She used to work at Julian Graves before it closed down and got a shedload of mini Kilner jars for something nuts like 5p each. We're putting one at every other place setting, then in alternate settings we're going to have a CD with a compilation of all the significant songs of the day. Pretty much everyone coming is in a couple so they will get a CD and chutney per household.

I think I might already have mentioned this, but I'm making all the napkins out of a load of different fabrics. I plan to free-machine-embroider everyone's name onto the napkin so they'll double up as place-names too. I'm putting a kraft paper bag between each place setting so everyone can chuck in their swag :)
