Has the gulf stream stopped or what on Earth is going on?

Nooooo... we've only just got rid of the last lot?

Not the gulf stream stopping - it's low pressure refusing to move (I hope!)

piratecat · 16/01/2010 22:11

link?

Mongolia · 16/01/2010 22:14

Well, if the southern emisphere is getting incredibly hot temperatures, and we are getting frozen here.... Is it not that what scientists have been predicting for years that would happen if the gulf stream stopped?

Just wondering...

Where are you all who are saying snow? I checked national forecast map on BBC website and can't see any snow.

galadriel77 · 16/01/2010 22:25

Just read this post and decided to check my forecast on the metoffice.

They have issued an early advisory for possible heavy snow in my area (Bucks) over higher ground (where we live).

Not impressed as I thought we were done with it all. Saw grass in my back garden for the first time today since 18 December!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/01/2010 22:27

look at my link Ilana - heavy rain on wednesday, cold pool of air. upper temps borderline. looks like a potentialheavy rain turning to snow situation. noone can say for certain what will happen, it is best guesses based on what computer models are suggesting and may well change.

paddingtonbear1 · 16/01/2010 22:27

lucykate I think you might be near me - my local forecast says heavy snow for next wed. Argh. I don't want any more of the stuff!

Mongolia · 16/01/2010 22:37

It is not the return of the bad weather that is bothering me most but... why is this happening? why everybody is ready to cast predictions and blame it all in global warming and the gulf stream slowing down, but now that what was predicted is happening there is just silence about it?

(I think I may be nursing a conspiracy theory here )

nothing stanfe about it - its just down to the way the way the weather is being steered at the moment. In recent years we've got it from the atlantic, but that is all being driven south this winter, so our weather is being dominated from the north and the east.

for more info google negative nao. (north atlantic oscillation)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/01/2010 22:48

oddly stranfe = strange

global warming has nothing to do with regions having a warmer winter than usual or colder winter than usual. tis about the overall temp of the globe rising - which it is. doesnt stop weather happening.

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 16/01/2010 23:06

Mongolia - the gulf stream has not stopped, it's just a shift in weather systems. We had a particularly persistant area of low pressure which caused NE winds, extreme sub zero temperatures and the daft amount of snow. The reason the snow went overnight is because that weather system shifted and we are now having winds coming from the south. Heavy rain is forecast for the coming week (in my area anyway), but there is still the chance of snow.

no need for a

Thanks, just having a look at NAO and happily reassured, thanks

Hope the Met office have got this wrong. Not an unlikely event.

E45 · 17/01/2010 16:45

Sticks fingers in ears in manner of a teenager and says...............

MrsMorgan · 17/01/2010 16:52

God I hope it is wrong. I need to be getting out and about more in my car to combat my nerves and I cannot do it in the snow.
