Are you sending your children to school Tuesday and Wednesday?

I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

We have sports day… I guess I can expect that to be cancelled!

Ours is Tuesday. I wouldn't bet it on it being cancelled. Mine didn't even let the kids go home early when it was 40c.

They pretty much have for the vast (if not all) majority. Certainly in England, can’t comment on other parts of the UK. All the schools in my area have finished exams for y11 and 13.

Well that's something!!

I’ve never taught in a school that has air conditioning in rooms other than computer rooms - which were always fully booked in hot weather!

Anyway, not everywhere in the UK is forecast a heat wave, it’s going to be cooler in the NW, still warm but not too high.

Yorkshire seems like it might be baking. 🥵

JanFebAndOnwards · Today 08:44

All public exams have finished. Some y12 or 10s may have mocks this week.

38°/39° isn't just 'summer' in the U.K.

our buildings are not designed for it, our bodies are not used to it.

Our high is 30°; feels like 32°.

Though I did also send him in the summer of 2022.

I honestly don’t get the mass hysteria about the weather. What are we going to do if this becomes the norm, just nobody do anything?

He’ll be absolutely fine, we’re not in the depths of hell, we’re experiencing a warm summer.

How do schools in say Africa manage then?

Are British classrooms so ill equipped?

You would think water coolers and pedestal fans could be used... guess the usual lack of funding is the issue.

At the moment I am but I'm expecting not to let her go to her martial arts class after school. Too much exercise in a hot stuffy village hall with no air circulation!

For those saying hot at school, hot at home, for us I think it's different. At home she can chill in just her pants if she wants. We have air conditioning in our living room. And no being sent outside for an hour during the hottest part of the day at lunch time! So much better at home. Still planning to send her in although part of me would quite like not to!

I'd keep her home, why wouldn't you? They're not going to learn anything (other than how awful it is).

Jellyofftheplate · Yesterday 20:38

Er, yes? They'll also be hot at home and I have to work.

The only reasonable response to the question.

Iocanepowder · Today 08:50

Met office now saying 40 on Wednesday where we

well for one thing. They're acclimatised. It was 13° here last Tuesday, predicted 39° this coming Tuesday.

secondly the buildings are designed for the climate, unlike ours.

OnePeachShark · Today 08:53

I am considering keeping mine off as the ‘feels like’ temperature here will be 37. There classrooms are warm and stuffy on normal sunny days!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · Today 08:54

Christ, and we wonder why younger generations have no resilience.

Purpleispretty · Today 08:54

29 is a heatwave. 38, as we’re expecting in the south east, is next level. Our buildings are built to trap heat, not keep cool. 30 bodies in a single room will be stifling, it’ll be hard to concentrate, and they’ll be stuck in uniform. I think you’re all being a bit harsh to the op. My daughter’s nursery is awful at the high 20s, I will not be sending her in on Tuesday. (Though I am worried about work!) They have a pathetic fan that barely does a thing, they even turn the lights off to prevent any extra heat…. at home she can strip and sit in a paddling pool or cool shower if needed. Although admittedly, if it were school I wouldn’t be keeping her home unless instructed to do so

Aren't they like Spain? Home at one? Siesta?

Why wouldn’t you send your child in? It’s not a heatwave, it’s summer!!

how did we cope with warm weather in the 80’s and 90’s etc without social media telling us it gonna be lovely and warm….

I don’t remember it being that hot in 1980s and 1990s.

But kids still go into school this week. We need to keep functioning.

poig · Today 08:58

those who are saying it’s just heat and no big deal, what’s the predicted temperature in your area? It’s predicted to be 39 where I am, but is cooler in other parts of the country. 39 is very different to 29. (although both are very hot)

followtheswallow · Today 08:59

Unsurprisingly, hot countries are set up for hot weather Hmm

Similar arguments happen every year if it snows ‘what about Canada’ canada is set up for snowy weather!

UK schools do not have air conditioning is the obvious answer!

Which parts of the country are predicted to be 39?

I was searching as I have relatives dotted around I want to keep an eye on,.but I am not sure which areas are predicted to be that high?

Yes of course. They need their education

Yeah they're going to learn SO much

Stressedoutmummyof3 · Today 09:02

Iocanepowder · Today 07:33

Yes correct. I know colleagues in our office started bringing fans in and were told to take them back home.

Same in nursery. A few staff members brought them in because the air con was broken but were told to take them home.

No, we need to learn to adapt

Maybe schools need to switch to a hot weather timetable.
We need to invest in air con and shaded areas for break times
We need to do the have non uniform or an actual sensible hot weather uniform

When I read this, I though "what heat wave?" and had to Google the weather in London. I was wearing a fleece today, and it's forecast to be 19 here on Wednesday.

I just can't imagine a temperature of 39 degrees. Surely no one will be capable of doing anything except complaining for the entire week?

Edited

Same here, even had the fire lit on Friday Night

Looking for us we might make 22o C on Wednesday , getting warmer towards the end of the week - but its going to be chucking it down

Stressedoutmummyof3 · Today 09:07

The heat in the UK is different to the heat in other countries. It's more humid and as has been said our houses and buildings are designed to keep heat in. Where are people living where they claim it's not a heatwave? Mid to high 30s here next week, what is considered a heatwave?

Cambridge. Although it’s saying 38 now, not 39! I’m sure that one degree lower will feel nice and cool!
