Are you sending your children to school Tuesday and Wednesday?

I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

People saying its silly? There's no way it was ever 34-36 when I was at school. Fans don't help. They push it all around hot air. Glass windows in schools. No shade. Hot school buses. No air con. Some kids will be more intolerant too.

Glass windows?! Whatever next!

And I'm amazed someone can be so short sighted.

You grew up in a country where buildings were designed with hot weather in mind. Many
English buildings trap the heat. Also if you grew up in a hot country you are acclimatised to hot weather. People here aren't.

I grew up in a country with hot summers. It’s already been high 30s over there , but kids also broke off for summer last week and won’t be back until September.

@SleeplessInWherever your kids school provide bottles of water every day?
Disposable ones? That must be incredibly expensive. And really bad for the environment.

They provide refillable bottles.

He is in specialist so I’m not sure if whether that’s somehow relevant!

I'm a teacher myself, and I'm anxious about sending my own kids into school next week. They've got sports day on Tuesday, which I've already been told won't be cancelled.

I might beg a favour off grandparents and see if they'll have them at home for one day at least.

So what would happen if you did put a couple of fans in your room? I can't inagine any school administrator justifying removal. On what grounds? What about health & safety for everyone?

Any electrical equipment in schools has to be PAT tested before it can be used. Same applies in hospitals and I expect in many offices.

OP is a teacher, she is hoping to have less kids next week.

As OP is a teacher, she would personally be expecting “fewer kids”. Sorry I’m turning into my DM!

Yes correct. I know colleagues in our office started bringing fans in and were told to take them back home.

It’s quite common - a lot of schools don’t allow things like fans and heaters.

and one fan will make no difference.

I read a bit about this. If air temp is around 35c or above fans are blowing warm air on you which can lead to dehydration; you need cooling showers and damp towels to cool off.
I think if it is that hot supplies need to be provided to keep people cool.
When we had the heat dome here, we kept windows/doors closed; curtains drawn; used rotating fans to circulate air; took cool baths/showers frequently; used a few cold packs at a time (back, neck, across torso) stayed hydrated; added salt to food ... just remembering how bad it was. Ugh.
It was 42c outside and up to 10c cooler inside, but I still felt horrendous (was also pregnant). I cannot tolerate heat to this day.

It's only set to be 30 degrees, for crying out loud. Do get a grip.

38 where I am and home would be much cooler than a glass building and sat in a room with 31 other kids.

Noted thanks.

Maybe your mother would have read the all the replies and realised that comment had already been made.

Cheers though, always happy to learn.

Why wouldn’t you send your child in? It’s not a heatwave, it’s summer!!

how did we cope with warm weather in the 80’s and 90’s etc without social media telling us it gonna be lovely and warm….

It’s forecast to be 34C and humid here. It that’s not a heatwave, what is?

Sleighmyname86 · Yesterday 07:40

AWellReadWoman · Yesterday 06:45

Yes! We both work, not in WFH roles. It's not going to be any cooler in our house than it is at nursery/school.

Technically not true.
im sure your house doesn’t have upto 34 people in a room.

MummyWillow1 · Yesterday 07:45

Mine has left school now, but I always sent her when it was hot - just make sure she had plenty to drink and suitable clothing. It was a bit more tricky at secondary school as they had a ridiculous rule that they could only take their blazer off if a teacher said they could 😫🙈

I bet the teachers hated that as much as the kids in summer - hot sweaty teenagers 🤢

usererror99 · Yesterday 07:45

I would think the ones intending on keeping their kids home are the parents that don’t work

Piggywaspushed · Yesterday 07:50

And the people who work form home or have flexible working : which is a growing cohort.

Ours on Tuesday has been cancelled

Maybe the whole academic year is not fit for purpose. Children aren't picking crops in the summer months anymore. 2 weeks holiday inn October and 2 in June would make more sense. Some sort of outdoor learning in the summer.

Just open the windows?

To let the 39 degree heat get fully in the house 🤣

I imagine most kids will be in at my secondary school. They won't all be in lessons, mind, as many of them seem to have given up that sort of thing. Instead they will be roaming around being rude to members of staff who ask why they aren't in class.

Don't suppose you work in a coastal town in the SE?

I'd imagine we're in for more of the same at my school!

Or, we could have a longer summer holiday like most other countries.

No, if I open my windows I get a lovely small breeze flowing through the house between front and back. Keep them closed and I get no breeze with the house becomes like a greenhouse. Even hotter than it is outside.

I don't believe this nonsense that you shut the heat out. This house certainly doesn't work that way.

Labamba78 · Yesterday 08:07

Sirzy · 20/06/2026 20:45

I work in a school and we are fully expecting everyone in! As we have during previous heatwaves.

our classroom is quite warm but we will leave blinds down and leave the door to outside open if there is any breeze. When we are outside we will limit the time and encourage staying in the shade.

make sure they are covered in sun cream and have a hat and water bottle and they will be fine

Is leaving the door open allowed? I would have thought classrooms need to be kept secure?

ChalkOutlines · Yesterday 08:08

FWC2026 · Yesterday 07:55

That made me laugh too!!

It’s not actually that funny. Obviously, the issue isn’t the glass , but the size and positioning of the glass eindows. Most of our classrooms have a whole wall of large windows. The sun shines right on them for most of the morning. No blinds. It creates a greenhouse effect pretty quickly.

I’m pretty sure i remember being able to see the weather forecast on teletext in the 90s!

I just did a quick google and the hotest temp in 1990 was 37c in August. So in some parts it will be hotter next week and the kids will still be at school.
