Am in an Amber area for snow, W.Midlands, already have a blizzard here, probably about 2 cm lying snow.

Fernticket · 08/01/2026 18:38

Right on the edge of danger area (s.wales border). Heavy rain at the moment. Thinking of all those in the firing line, especially those in the red zone.

Nellieinthebarn · 08/01/2026 19:18

I think we might be lucky in The Forest of Dean and it will just miss us, fingers crossed. I have my power cut kit standing by just in case though. Thinking of you all who might not be so lucky.

olivietolivie · 08/01/2026 19:30

I’m in the red area. It went creepily calm earlier but has ramped up again now. I’ve come to bed so if there is a power cut I’ll probably just shut my eyes and go to sleep Grin

chouxchoux · 08/01/2026 19:44

I’m in an amber area for snow, although East Midlands (South Derbyshire) so not expecting to be as badly hit as Birmingham and the surrounds. It’s coming down here as I type, almost sideways, and settling. Have stocked up the fridge as I expect to be snowed in for a bit!

Isabelle70 · 08/01/2026 19:44

I am in the Channel Islands and we are expecting it to be a rough night with a few trees down already.

LemaxObsessive · 08/01/2026 19:45

Not going to get any snow in my part of North Yorkshire. DD is so excited as she heard at school there’s going to be lots of snow and she’s going to be gutted! I’m a little sad too, I would’ve liked an extra day at home with her!

Oooh! Off topic but what’s it like in the Channel Islands? Is it a nice place to live?

I was born here and apart from 5 years as a kid have always lived here. I really like it, very good safe way of life. Yes it’s expensive but if you have a good job you can be comfortable.
Beaches, cliff walks etc can be at most a 15 minute drive from your home.
There are families that leave and move to the UK to lower costs but the grass is not always greener. I know of 3 families that have moved back to Guernsey in the last couple of years.

I'm sure you have but make sure your phone is fully charged so if you do get a power cut you can still let us know how you are doing!

olivietolivie · 08/01/2026 21:31

It is fully charged and I have a back up phone so never fear - no losing Mumsnet for me. Lots of trees down across the county and sounds pretty wild out there.

Cleo65 · 08/01/2026 21:42

I'm in Cornwall & it's been battering us since 7pm, there's now 40,000 homes without electric (mine being one of them).
Gerrati literally arrived with a bang, we can't see a thing outside but there's been almighty bangs & thuds constantly. It's been very scary...thoughts with our amazing emergency workers out there in it. There's been a lot of damage.

FuzzyPuffling · 08/01/2026 21:55

I'm in Plymouth and its been gusting up to 82mph. Sounds like a pack of wolves howling down my chimney, but my friends in Cornwall have it worse. At least we still have electricity.
Stay safe all. It's scary out there.

musicalfrog · 08/01/2026 22:58

How's it in Cornwall now?

Red warning about to end, I think?

CrushingOnRubies · 08/01/2026 23:04

I’m in Cornwall. It’s been a rather noisy evening. Many friends have lost power. I haven’t but lots of light flickering. Schools closed at 2pm this afternoon and many are opening late tomorrow morning.

Red alert is due to finish soon so hopefully getting to the end of it

musicalfrog · 08/01/2026 23:11

Hopefully everyone will get some sleep then!

I'm in East Anglia and all we've had is heavy rain here.

featherlampshade · 08/01/2026 23:23

I’m in West Yorkshire (Holmfirth) and we’re having heavy snow! It’s quite deep now and my power keeps going off and coming back on

mellongoose · 09/01/2026 07:27

Cornwall here. We lost power last night but it came back on at about 5:30am thank goodness. Waiting for daylight to assess damage.

I will work from home but others here need to check livestock and fishing vessels so will need to go out.

Waiting to hear about school but I suspect it will be closed.

Lots of trees down blocking most routes from here and/or lots of standing water which will be tough for small cars.

CrushingOnRubies · 09/01/2026 08:10

My Cornish school is closed for the day. Can’t get hold of dps to let them know that they aren’t looking after the dog today. Reckon their WiFi and power are down. Lots of people in home town don’t have water either.

musicalfrog · 09/01/2026 10:28

Have updated the BBC live link below.

Thankfully it seems there have been no fatalities so people did listen to the warnings.

I'm in Cornwall. It was scary last night! We lost a lot of our roof, and are still without power.

disappearingfish · 09/01/2026 21:24

Several friends and family in Cornwall are still without power, some without water as well. Mainly in small villages or rural areas.

Power kept going off in Falmouth town centre tonight. My parents’ local was BYOC (bring your own candle) tonight.

musicalfrog · 09/01/2026 23:18

Sorry to hear that @SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter i hope it's back on soon (the roof and the power!) Have you had to move out? It must be hard to keep warm with no roof.

OP posts:
musicalfrog · 09/01/2026 23:19

@disappearingfish I love the sound of BYOC! Cosy.
