Winter 2025/2026

We’re a few weeks from the start of meteorological winter on the 1st December but there are already some musings on websites about what the next season might bring….

So here are the thoughts of:

Netweather ~ (Vegemiteandhoneyontoast posted a link to this one on the Autumn thread).....
https://www.netweather.tv/weather-forecasts/news/13184-winter-202526-outlook-what-four-decades-of-weak-la-nina-winters-tell-us

Two from TheWeatherOutlook…..

https://www.theweatheroutlook.com/weather-news/7672/uk-snow-or-cold-snap-in-november---here-is-what-the-model-data-says

And SevereWeatherEurope (a new one that I haven’t come across before, has some well put-together explanations)….
https://www.severe-weather.eu/long-range-2/winter-2025-2026-outlook-colder-season-forecast-for-united-states-canada-europe-fa/

My thoughts (more gut feeling than anything and based on the weather we’ve been having recently!), is that we’re veering towards a fairly quiet but colder than average winter. I don’t think we’ll have many storms but there’ll be rain at times (which will go some way towards upping the reservoir levels.) I think there’ll be some cold snaps (maybe more at the start of winter), plenty of sunny days and nighttime frosts. Hopefully (for those that like it!), we’ll get some snow and the chances of that will increase if the quiet, settled weather stays and systems from the Atlantic try to move in. Any snow will probably last a day or two rather than the ‘so much snow that the country grinds to a halt,’ sort of thing.

So we’ll see if any of these predictions come true!......

Thanks @GloriaSmud it is not the best winter weather! This week has been awful and gloomy. I spied the sun for the first time in ages this morning.

At stage for me it’s - roll on Spring! I

Wow that looks pretty immense in the US.

Also seen there are crazy hot temperatures in Australia. I guess at times we should be grateful for our temperate climate (I’d just like a little more sun!)

GloriaSmud · 24/01/2026 09:36

@Delatron ~ it's looking like it's going to be a difficult week over the US side of the world. At the moment, I can't see the jet stream firing up just yet (as mentioned on Netweather) but it just means more of the same dull weather (or 'meh' weather, as I call it!) for us. At least we have some sun today, so take the bright days when we can....

@GloriaSmud it is meh! I shall enjoy the sun today!

Doesn’t the US normally send bad or good weather our way? Via Ireland etc? So we may get snow?!

It does if the jetstream is fired up (and especially if it's quite fast as well) and weather systems get carried along by it over our way. To get snow, there are other factors involved but I think generally, the main thing we need is quiet weather and that usually involves the jet stream being to the south of us. If the cold moves in from the East (as in 'The Beast from the East' a few years ago), we can get snow that way or once the cold is in place, from weather fronts coming from the west, hitting the cold over us and then turning to sleet/snow etc.

In the next few days, we'll have much colder temperatures over northern England/Scotland, so much of what comes from the west will possibly turn to snow, especially over the hills. Everyone else will get this dull 'meh' weather!

Used to. My friend lives over there when she had storms, snow you could count ten days ahead and know what weather was due here.

It's not as reliable now.

OH joy. 😭

It's blowing a hoolie here in the NE but its seems like it's been windy for weeks.
One of the Tyne piers was badly damaged by Storm Arwen and was due to reopen this year. Sadly not anymore.

Is there the opposite of a rain dance? Because I need one.

It's madness isn't it? It is literally always windy here. Today is crazy though, with some of the strongest gusts in England yet we never seem to come under a wind warning. I've been whinging about this for years, I'm not sure what i expect to happen.

Anyway, hope it dies down a bit tonight as forecasted and I hope the ice isn't too bad for everyone tomorrow.

RafaistheKingofClay ~ rain dance might not be needed, Netweather's thoughts on the possibility of colder weather on the way in February...

Thank god for that. We had 7cm over night and the river is no longer where the river should be.

I saw that the Ouse had overflowed.

RafaistheKingofClay · 27/01/2026 17:11

Pretty much everything has burst its banks here. Need a good few weeks with minimal rain for the ground to dry out.

childofthe607080s · 29/01/2026 23:14

Our forecast shows rain every day for the next 2 weeks

justasking111 · 29/01/2026 23:30

We've got snow forecast tonight. Son in Yorkshire in the morning.

More rain here. That’s nearly 10cm since Monday. Considering developing gills.

Fingers crossed for some cold but drying out weather.

GloriaSmud · 01/02/2026 08:15

A bit of a damp, drizzly, wet (for some places) first few days before it dries out towards the end of the week and gets colder. Chance of snow for the north/Scotland but hopefully dry/showery for everyone else. Dry doesn't necessarily mean 'sun' though so we still might have to put up with this grey 'meh' weather. <sigh>

I guess this is what winter clothing is for but it’s so uninspiring! At least I know not to hold out for a better day later in the week
