We’re a few weeks from the start of meteorological winter on the 1st December but there are already some musings on websites about what the next season might bring….

So here are the thoughts of:

Netweather ~ (Vegemiteandhoneyontoast posted a link to this one on the Autumn thread).....
https://www.netweather.tv/weather-forecasts/news/13184-winter-202526-outlook-what-four-decades-of-weak-la-nina-winters-tell-us

Two from TheWeatherOutlook…..

https://www.theweatheroutlook.com/weather-news/7672/uk-snow-or-cold-snap-in-november---here-is-what-the-model-data-says

And SevereWeatherEurope (a new one that I haven’t come across before, has some well put-together explanations)….
https://www.severe-weather.eu/long-range-2/winter-2025-2026-outlook-colder-season-forecast-for-united-states-canada-europe-fa/

My thoughts (more gut feeling than anything and based on the weather we’ve been having recently!), is that we’re veering towards a fairly quiet but colder than average winter. I don’t think we’ll have many storms but there’ll be rain at times (which will go some way towards upping the reservoir levels.) I think there’ll be some cold snaps (maybe more at the start of winter), plenty of sunny days and nighttime frosts. Hopefully (for those that like it!), we’ll get some snow and the chances of that will increase if the quiet, settled weather stays and systems from the Atlantic try to move in. Any snow will probably last a day or two rather than the ‘so much snow that the country grinds to a halt,’ sort of thing.

So we’ll see if any of these predictions come true!......

Current weather warnings, including some Amber ones for Storm Bram. Strongest winds are probably going to be up the Irish sea, along the coast of England and Wales for most of the day before the storm moves north and then northern England will be in line for strong winds, from this afternoon/evening.

UK weather warnings

Met Office UK weather warnings for rain, wind, snow, ice, fog, thunderstorm, lightning and extreme heat.

My dog wanted out at 4am 😳😩. It was raining here in the NE but it was so mild. No rushing in to keep the warmth in. Bizarre.

I feel there might be snow on the LT horizon given the Met forecast but if it stops raining for a bit, I’ll be ok with that.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 09/12/2025 09:19

It's getting wild with the arrival of Storm Bram. (South County Cork).

justasking111 · 09/12/2025 18:03

Wind screaming here. There's a lot of flooding. Boats over in the marina. Bram is a bad one for Wales.

Keep safe @FuzzyCaoraDhubh

So mild. I’ve seen trees in blossom! Bizarre.

I don’t like it. Winter needs to be cold.

Trees in blossom? As in ones that shouldn't blossom until spring? I've seen Viburnum in blossom, but that's a late autumn / winter flowering shrub anyway.

Come to the North East coast of England! It's always freezing cold here. It might say it's 7 or 8 degrees, but the ever-present bitterly cold wind says something else.

Fatrascal27 · 11/12/2025 13:31

Yep. Apple or Cherry I think. NW England

Fatrascal27 · 11/12/2025 22:11

Actually saw a bee today!

I thought I saw cherry blossom as I was on the bus this morning. Thought I must have been mistaken but perhaps not. Might have to go have a closer look and see what the tree was.

There are some winter flowering cherry trees, but I also noticed that one of my apple trees was starting to bud today. It can't be because of mild weather here, as it's flipping freezing, but I do wonder if it is to do with it being a Mast Year this year. Strange times.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 12/12/2025 21:44

3 degrees here tonight, so not feeling mild at all.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/12/2025 19:00

Any sort of prolonged dry period upcoming @GloriaSmud. I don’t mind cold. But more than one day where it doesn’t rain would be good.

GloriaSmud · 16/12/2025 19:31

@RafaistheKingofClay ~ next week is looking ok. It's looking drier/colder in the run-up to Christmas and possibly heading towards the New Year as well (although that's looking waaaay-ahead in terms of forecasting!)

Excellent. Because I want to do some clearing of the jungle that is the garden. I don’t mind cold but torrential rain is not my preferred gardening weather. I am of course away next week 😂

GloriaSmud · 17/12/2025 07:59

RafaistheKingofClay ~ 😆'Tis always the way!

Horrible here again. Wet and windy 🥶

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 17/12/2025 09:59

Tomorrow's forecast is ghastly, with a yellow warning for where we live and just 'heavy rain' for where we're going, which is to an funeral and burial ceremony. I bought new boots but wellies might be appropriate.

ArcticGrass · 17/12/2025 14:21

It's been bucketing down here all day and strong winds. Got the dog out earlier when it wasn't quite so bad.... Felt sorry for the local Santa race - they looked bedraggled.

Wet, rain, wind up to Christmas Day here in the North West. It's fuckwittery. The garden is so damp.

Oh gosh, that's awful. Hope it goes as well as it can.

Oh Vegemiteandhoneyontoast ~ Sad
It is indeed looking awful tomorrow ~ wet and windy for a lot of the country.

Well, we have brollies, wellies and waterproofs and some of them will be needed. It's rubbish but this day has to be done.

justasking111 · 19/12/2025 14:27

After an awful night where the big double glazed window in the sitting room was flexing and groaning. It was sunny this morning, the wind abated. Clouds are building up again now.

I’m in the NE and the wind recently has made it so cold. Yesterday was Baltic and it was meant to be mild on paper.

I’m done to be honest. The constant rain has really knocked me for six, I’m struggling and given I stress about the weather anyway, I’m really not coping.

Grey and murk for the next few days. They are threatening snow all over the rubbish newspapers on fb but who knows.
