Winter 2025/2026

We’re a few weeks from the start of meteorological winter on the 1st December but there are already some musings on websites about what the next season might bring….

So here are the thoughts of:

Netweather ~ (Vegemiteandhoneyontoast posted a link to this one on the Autumn thread).....
https://www.netweather.tv/weather-forecasts/news/13184-winter-202526-outlook-what-four-decades-of-weak-la-nina-winters-tell-us

Two from TheWeatherOutlook…..

https://www.theweatheroutlook.com/weather-news/7672/uk-snow-or-cold-snap-in-november---here-is-what-the-model-data-says

And SevereWeatherEurope (a new one that I haven’t come across before, has some well put-together explanations)….
https://www.severe-weather.eu/long-range-2/winter-2025-2026-outlook-colder-season-forecast-for-united-states-canada-europe-fa/

My thoughts (more gut feeling than anything and based on the weather we’ve been having recently!), is that we’re veering towards a fairly quiet but colder than average winter. I don’t think we’ll have many storms but there’ll be rain at times (which will go some way towards upping the reservoir levels.) I think there’ll be some cold snaps (maybe more at the start of winter), plenty of sunny days and nighttime frosts. Hopefully (for those that like it!), we’ll get some snow and the chances of that will increase if the quiet, settled weather stays and systems from the Atlantic try to move in. Any snow will probably last a day or two rather than the ‘so much snow that the country grinds to a halt,’ sort of thing.

So we’ll see if any of these predictions come true!......

Sending thoughts to everyone in it. We moved because we used to live near trees and after Arwen it was just too much. Weather can have such an impact.

@EducatingArti We’re in South West Sheffield. Roads are covered, about an inch currently. A few cars passing ok.

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/01/2026 22:44

Hope you are ok @DollyPentreath

cheeseybeans19 · 08/01/2026 22:48

Had quite a lot of snow in my part of Leicestershire but it’s now turned to rain, really hoping it snows and settles again overnight or my son will be disappointed in the morning ! He’s desperate to go sledging ❄️

Thank you so much

The snow started off well here (Leicester) last night and we got a 2-3cm covering before it turned to sleet around 10.30pm. It's now become a bit of a disappointing slushy mush now! DDs wanted to go sledging as well but I don't think there's a lot to go sledging in (they're aged 19-26 yrs- you're never too old!)

I think we've had about a foot of snow but our mobile signal only just came back on & the electricity is still out.

Delatron · 09/01/2026 11:12

We had nothing but expectations were low here. We were right on the border of the warnings of snow and it didn’t really look cold enough. Think the system swung round earlier than expected (more west?) and then split over the Chilterns so even high levels that were predicted (by some forecasts) to get snow didn’t.

Lots of disappointed people on the local Facebook weather forecaster’s page!

Hope the areas in the high winds didn’t suffer much damage and power is restored.

Delatron · 09/01/2026 11:13

It’s a shame your snow is going @GloriaSmud !

Northerndoglover · 09/01/2026 11:38

Not much happened here in the NE but we have a bit of a mixed weekend ahead. Snow/rain/ice forecast. Who knows.

I’m writing this week off and hoping the warmer weather (and a bit of sun) predicted from Monday will force me into productivity.

I hope power comes on to those that are cut off, even if it warms up, people need heat at this time of year.

GloriaSmud · 09/01/2026 11:46

@Delatron ~ it is indeed but I guess when things started easing off late last night, it was a sign that it wasn't going to be a 'Winter Wonderland' when we got up!

There are still some weather warnings about for ice and snow for the next few days but then things warm up next week (although there will still be the chance of snow over Scottish hills and nighttime frosts.)

All change on the forecasts for our bit of west Oxfordshire. Met Office has snow warnings and Netweather shows no precipitation. Currently it seems better to just look out of the window.

DollyPentreath · 10/01/2026 20:00

Power just come back on here. Thank God

BiddyPopthe2nd · 11/01/2026 11:17

We had torrential rain on Friday so everything melted, and woke up to everything white again yesterday. It’s cloudy and full today, but dry and calm (no wind), 0 degrees on my balcony but a slow thaw going on in the concrete square below me.

gingercat02 · 11/01/2026 12:28

Absolutely pissing down here, alternating between sleet and rain. Blowing a hooley too. I've been to the gym but I'm not going out again!

justasking111 · 11/01/2026 13:53

Blooming awful here, wind and rain. NW Wales.

The temp has picked up and snow mostly melted, and the breeze as well. As the breeze turned fully south and there’s rain/sleet forecast overnight for Brussels, I brought my clothes horse in off the balcony - there was reasonable drying outside but they do need a fair bit more.

Sandysandal · 17/01/2026 07:13

Colder weather again at the end of next week?

GloriaSmud · 17/01/2026 08:41

Sandysandal ~ it's looking that way. Until next Friday, it carries on looking unsettled (chance of snow over Scottish hills this coming week) but from next weekend onwards, it looks like it turns colder everywhere...

The metoffice long range forecast hints at it as well...

Wednesday, 21st-30th January
Throughout this period, the UK will see a battle between Atlantic weather systems attempting to arrive from the west while high pressure and colder conditions attempt to exert some influence from the east. Initially, milder Atlantic air is expected to dominate. This should maintain often cloudy, changeable conditions with showers or longer spells of rain for most. The wettest weather in western parts of the country, drier in the east. Temperatures overall likely to be around average with some night frosts in clearer areas. Later in the period, there is an increased chance that conditions will turn colder. This aspect of the forecast is still somewhat uncertain but the potential transition to colder weather also increases the chance of snow across parts of the country.

We're in rural Aberdeenshire, visiting the in laws, there is still snow on the ground up here.

Sometimessometimesnot · 17/01/2026 11:52

My weather app has snowflakes from 26th January onwards. Live in SE.

So turning colder this weekend but it isn't looking like the widespread cold that models were first suggesting. For today, there are some weather warnings for heavy rain about (possibilty of snow over Scottish hills.)

After that when it comes to this coming week, much colder for the north/Scotland with the risk of snow/wintry showers, especially over the hills of Scotland/northern England and Wales. Everywhere else ~ cold, temperatures about average, dull (although there might be some sunny spells at times), chance of overnight frosts and rain at times/maybe some wintry showers ~ not the best when it comes to winter weather really!
