Winter 2025/2026

We’re a few weeks from the start of meteorological winter on the 1st December but there are already some musings on websites about what the next season might bring….

So here are the thoughts of:

Netweather ~ (Vegemiteandhoneyontoast posted a link to this one on the Autumn thread).....
https://www.netweather.tv/weather-forecasts/news/13184-winter-202526-outlook-what-four-decades-of-weak-la-nina-winters-tell-us

Two from TheWeatherOutlook…..

https://www.theweatheroutlook.com/weather-news/7672/uk-snow-or-cold-snap-in-november---here-is-what-the-model-data-says

And SevereWeatherEurope (a new one that I haven’t come across before, has some well put-together explanations)….
https://www.severe-weather.eu/long-range-2/winter-2025-2026-outlook-colder-season-forecast-for-united-states-canada-europe-fa/

My thoughts (more gut feeling than anything and based on the weather we’ve been having recently!), is that we’re veering towards a fairly quiet but colder than average winter. I don’t think we’ll have many storms but there’ll be rain at times (which will go some way towards upping the reservoir levels.) I think there’ll be some cold snaps (maybe more at the start of winter), plenty of sunny days and nighttime frosts. Hopefully (for those that like it!), we’ll get some snow and the chances of that will increase if the quiet, settled weather stays and systems from the Atlantic try to move in. Any snow will probably last a day or two rather than the ‘so much snow that the country grinds to a halt,’ sort of thing.

So we’ll see if any of these predictions come true!......

'Uninspiring' is another good word to describe it, @childofthe607080s! I guess it's a case of enjoying any sunny spells that come along this week...

It's, rain 🌧️ 😺 and 🐶 here 😔

gingercat02 · 01/02/2026 15:33

We have had a little sunshine yesterday and today. Such a lovely change

Delatron · 01/02/2026 17:51

No sun here today. It’s very flooded down by the river. Very sick of it all now.

Plotting to leave this country every Jan/Feb once the kids leave home. It’s miserable!

Delatron · 01/02/2026 17:52

I have my hopes pinned on Wednesday 😂. For a glimpse of the sun!

GloriaSmud · 02/02/2026 09:44

Delatron ~ holding out for Wednesday afternoon sun here as well! The rest of the week it's all overcast/drizzle/light rain. The north and Scotland gets the possibility of snow from tomorrow onwards so the metoffice have issued some snow warnings.

Thanks @GloriaSmud Feb looks to be carrying on the same way as Jan. Boo!

GloriaSmud · 02/02/2026 11:41

It does indeed @Delatron and the month ahead forecast from Netweather is similar to what you think ~ just more 'meh' weather with much talk of 'below average sunshine' levels.
I plan to enjoy the sun when we get sunny spells!

A bit of a damp, drizzly, wet (for some places) first few days before it dries out towards the end of the week and gets colder. Chance of snow for the north/Scotland but hopefully dry/showery for everyone else. Dry doesn't necessarily mean 'sun' though so we still might have to put up with this grey 'meh' weather. <sigh>

I can live with meh if it isn’t actually raining and doesn’t come with yet another bloody rain warning.

At least I don’t need an actual boat to get to work now. I think we’ve had double the average amount of rain for January.

(I think from memory you're down in the South/SW, Rafa), it's been especially bad down that way and the SW has really suffered. It looks like in the coming days, rain will become a bit lighter and patchy (with hopefully a few sunny spells thrown in at times.) There'll be heavy stuff on some days but hopefully things can begin to dry out a bit now.

And still every single day on the '14 day forecast' shows rain.

We need sunshine!

<takes vitamin D and wanders off in a huff>

Sailininthechoppa · 03/02/2026 21:05

The cheaper high street "dry robe" I bought a while ago is turning out to be worth it's weight in gold this winter. I no longer care if I look daft, I'm toasty and dry walking to town and the gym. Don't even need an umbrella with it.

justasking111 · 03/02/2026 21:17

It's getting to DH. The endless wet grey days, he's now got man flu. Was ranting last night with bad temper. Went to bed early. He said this morning he was in a foul mood last night. Well DUH!!

I bet last minute bookings on holidays are up. Somewhere that is 🌞🌞

GloriaSmud · 04/02/2026 07:02

It's seems neverending at the moment - grey, rain, damp, drizzle, occasional fog, mist. I think it was Sunday or Monday, the sun broke through for all of a minute or so and that's been it since then. It looks like there possibly could be a change in weather patterns but not 'til the middle of next week 😭

This from TheWeatherOutlook sums it all up....

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 04/02/2026 08:00

We have the same weather over here in Ireland. Never-ending rain. We rarely get a dry day any more!

Delatron · 04/02/2026 08:20

Gosh it’s miserable!

I can spot a bit of blue sky so I’m hoping for a glimpse of the sun today…

childofthe607080s · 04/02/2026 09:41

We are heading out to get wet today but not for the hills which can’t really be seen

GloriaSmud · 04/02/2026 10:50

I've just been out for a walk and there was a glimpse of sun through the murk/cloud/drizzle/mist. It has been seen so it still exists up there somewhere! ⛅

In Leicester, childofthe607080s. And it's gone back to grey murk again so possibly that's it for the week day!

😂. Ah sorry for those that don’t have sun. We’re in S.Bucks. Back to miserable tomorrow for the foreseeable. I’m about to go for a walk to make the most of it.

Hope it appears for others!

justasking111 · 04/02/2026 14:58

Really teed off cloud cover so low can't see the red arrows practice. Just heard the typhoon go over too 😭

GloriaSmud · 04/02/2026 16:04

Oh dear justasking111.
We've had quite a lot of blue sky and sunshine this afternoon, which was a bit unexpected after the gloom earlier. According to the metoffice, it's back to murk and drizzle tomorrow and Friday so normal service resumes when it comes to the weather at the moment!
