Winter 2025/2026

We’re a few weeks from the start of meteorological winter on the 1st December but there are already some musings on websites about what the next season might bring….

So here are the thoughts of:

Netweather ~ (Vegemiteandhoneyontoast posted a link to this one on the Autumn thread).....
https://www.netweather.tv/weather-forecasts/news/13184-winter-202526-outlook-what-four-decades-of-weak-la-nina-winters-tell-us

Two from TheWeatherOutlook…..
https://www.theweatheroutlook.com/weather-news/7632/winter-2025-26-weather-outlook
https://www.theweatheroutlook.com/weather-news/7672/uk-snow-or-cold-snap-in-november---here-is-what-the-model-data-says

And SevereWeatherEurope (a new one that I haven’t come across before, has some well put-together explanations)….
https://www.severe-weather.eu/long-range-2/winter-2025-2026-outlook-colder-season-forecast-for-united-states-canada-europe-fa/

My thoughts (more gut feeling than anything and based on the weather we’ve been having recently!), is that we’re veering towards a fairly quiet but colder than average winter. I don’t think we’ll have many storms but there’ll be rain at times (which will go some way towards upping the reservoir levels.) I think there’ll be some cold snaps (maybe more at the start of winter), plenty of sunny days and nighttime frosts. Hopefully (for those that like it!), we’ll get some snow and the chances of that will increase if the quiet, settled weather stays and systems from the Atlantic try to move in. Any snow will probably last a day or two rather than the ‘so much snow that the country grinds to a halt,’ sort of thing.

So we’ll see if any of these predictions come true!......

You are predicting a near perfect winter !

GloriaSmud · 31/10/2025 19:41

I suppose I am, childofthe607080s! Grin

I like your prediction and am going with that!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 02/11/2025 20:27

Thanks for the new thread @GloriaSmud I've just seen that our coming forecast for the next week or so seems rather mild. It's quite discombobulating to think that we've already had night time lows of 3 degrees regularly and recently, here on the NE coast of England, but the forecast for the next week is around 10 /11. Not much difference in daytime and nighttime temps.

Full moon on 5th November. That's impacted our Aurora here.

GloriaSmud · 03/11/2025 07:10

@RainbowZebraWarrior Smile
It is a bit of a 'messy' mixed up time of year when it comes to weather. We can go from warm (it was lovely here yesterday) to frost, sometimes a bit of snow and then wind, rain and stormy, all in the space of a week or two!

According to Netweather it looks like mid-November, it might be turning colder....

I hear we are getting snow next week - even the possibility of some down South! Going to be a shock to the system after 14/15 degree days and nights in the SE!

Northerndoglover · 13/11/2025 09:39

I have horrific weather anxiety (mainly due to something that I witnessed as a child) and consequently I’m constantly on the Met office website. These severe weather places (with their fb counterparts) hype up bad weather and I don’t think the naming of storms helps.

I’ll never forget the winter of 2010/2011 when it started to snow in November and that was it for the rest of the season!

I agree our Novembers are getting milder and wetter (particularly up here in the NE) although my parents always complain how cold it is when they come up from the South!

Yes. It's my DDs birthday next week and she asked me to check the forecast. She said I hope it's not going to be raining. I said nope, snow apparently. She wasn't impressed. She will be 14. I'd have been ridiculously excited if I was her.

Quick placemark for winter. It isn’t feeling very winter right now.

GloriaSmud · 01/12/2025 07:07

No it isn't, RafaistheKingofClay
And we start the new season with some weather warnings, including an Amber one for South Wales.

After today and tomorrow, there are signs that it dries up a bit and becomes a bit more seasonal, with temperatures mostly around the norm for the time of year.

We're in the south and it sounds grotty out there today. It's not light enough to see how wet it is.

Northerndoglover · 01/12/2025 07:32

I’m in the NE and there is so much rain. Paths are flooded, fields are sodden, dog is refusing to go out.

I’m not asking for a repeat of 2010 because that was horrific beyond horrific but proper respite of rain might help.

RafaistheKingofClay · 01/12/2025 11:13

Might have to turn the heating back on again then once the temps drop. At this rate I’m going to end up in credit all winter as well.

GloriaSmud · 02/12/2025 06:54

Netweather and TheWeatherOutlook issued their winter forecasts yesterday. It looks like they're both going for a warm/mild/wet winter but with the chance of some cold snaps. So we'll see.....

All the rain warnings we’ve had over the past few weeks didn’t come to much. Flooded roads everywhere today. Not so much as a hint of a warning. The fields must be saturated.

Northerndoglover · 05/12/2025 21:19

We had horrific rain last Friday/Saturday. Flooded roads and paths everywhere but no weather warning.

Apparently there is a “wall of snow” heading this way to our region. Funny that given it’s going to be 13 degrees next week 🥴.

GloriaSmud · 06/12/2025 07:33

It's been a damp few days and that looks set to continue into the early part of next week. There's also the possibility of a storm coming, Monday night and through Tuesday, bringing strong winds and rain to Wales, Northern England and Scotland. It could become a named one but I think there'll be some weather warnings issued in the next few days....

And the GFS goes as far as Christmas Eve and at the moment for that week, it's looking chilly, with overnight frosts, maybe some snow over the mountains....so maybe more of a seasonal Christmas than a white one?

Cheers @GloriaSmud always look out for your updates at this time of year, we having a Christmas weather thread? 🎄

Donutface2 · 08/12/2025 08:02

I’ll take a seasonal Christmas at this point! I keep checking this thread hoping you will bring us a change in this awful weather!

GloriaSmud · 08/12/2025 08:25

@leesmum ~ we could do (a christmas thread) ~ give me a day or two and I'll get one going!

Donutface2 ~ the weather is all over the place ~ it's all a bit 'Autumn' rather than 'Winter' at the moment!

Thanks for the thread Gloria.

I’m in a T-shirt underneath waterproofs - it doesn’t feel very wintery, just a bit grey and blah!
