Potential for another named storm on Saturday 30th Dec.

Carefully not putting the storm name in the thread title yet! If it didn't get named, it would make things confusing down the line. However, it looks very likely that Storm Henk will arrive on Saturday. An early heads up as it will probably be another high volume travel day.

At the moment, it looks like it rapidly deepens just to the west of Ireland, bringing some very nasty gales over Ireland and Irish sea neighbouring areas, before these gales transfer eastwards. Looking at the shape of the storm I think there's potential for some short lived severe winds over a small area

Blizzards possible over higher ground in Scotland, heavy rain in places.

Will update as and when I can. In the meantime, take care with todays Storm Gerrit.

Oh bloody Hell, thanks for this. Was hoping to take DD out tomorrow for our annual swanky lunch but might be better off just staying in with a film & the fire on!

TheShellBeach · 29/12/2023 12:55

@OhYouBadBadKitten I can't see mid Argyll on that map.
What horrors can we expect?

Dragonfly97 · 29/12/2023 13:51

Following.

Bobsledgirl · 29/12/2023 16:11

Don’t know about time it I parked the car at lunchtime to meet a friend for lunch and the temperature dropped 5 degrees in an hour and started to hail. Brrrrrrr.

A wet and rather windy day tomorrow. Gusting to around 50mph or so I think.

Thank you OYBBK.
We had flooding on Wednesday.

justasking111 · 29/12/2023 22:11

It's lovely tonight, cold, crisp with a bright moon in the sky. We've just walked back to the car after visiting friends. It's still windy but fresh somehow. All the dank weather has disappeared for a short while. A proper winter evening.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 30/12/2023 08:22

It rained last night and it's zero degrees here this morning, so I guess I'd better see if it's icy out.

For once, we don't seem to be covered by the latest warnings here on the NE coast of England, but just sending my best to everyone that this latest front (is it named yet?) isn't too disruptive.

Travel safely, anyone who has to be out and about.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/12/2023 09:20

No name for this storm @RainbowZebraWarrior

I thought they'd named it on the weather last night?

Anyway. All calm here in the WMids. Trees still.

It seems that some of the media has decided it has been named. It hasn't. Only the Met Office, Met Eireann or KNMI can award names from the selected list.

If course other countries name storms too, from their own list. Hence Storm Pia just before Christmas.

To be fair it was 12.30... (I thought it was met office weather bods presenting the forecasts)

It's going to confuse some people when storm Hank does come along!

Wednesdaysotherchild · 30/12/2023 11:00

As per met office prediction, wind starting up in SW…

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/12/2023 11:03

Definitely Blackeyed. Earlier this week it did look like it was going to be named, though that was in reality speculation by people including me.

Warnings have been updated to up the total rainfall.

Was calm when I woke but wind getting up here in Plymouth- don't like the look of the squally band of rain headed our way.

justasking111 · 30/12/2023 11:24

Absolutely still here, rain stopped too. 🤷‍♀️

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/12/2023 15:52

Shes no longer the storm with no name. She has been named Storm Geraldine by Meteo France.

Just been following Kernow weather on Facebook. Sounds absolutely horrendous down there.
Fingers crossed its calmed down a bit as it heads up north.

nannynick · 30/12/2023 17:29

Yesterday NE Scotland to Carlisle, no snow to report other than a bit could be seen on high hills around Abington.
There was a frost first thing today in Carlisle. I drove South to Surrey and no snow to report anywhere on route. Rain in places. No major wind issues whilst driving M6/M40.
Think I choose a good time to make the long drive.

justasking111 · 30/12/2023 19:35

We dodged the squall in N Wales, just more danged rain

BabbleBee · 30/12/2023 23:54

Wind really picking up here on the south coast with heavy rain starting. Distant loud thunder too.

doggiedude · 31/12/2023 00:48

Wind in SW Kent is quite scary now!
