Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Quite honestly hating this. I didn't feel like this during the last red warning Cornwall had (last year?)

The cat is hiding under the bed. He's usually out in all weathers

Goldenbear · 01/11/2023 21:11

We are in Brighton and my 16 year old DS decided to visit his girlfriend after college despite my objections, she lives nearer the sea so I am quite worried, have heard 3x emergency vehicle sirens in last hour, could be a coincidence but my MIL has an apartment on seafront and tells me it is already getting wild!

Some views from webcams at Sidmouth ~ Jacob's Ladder and Port Royal (might need a few seconds to load or need refreshing ~ probably because there are a lot of viewers at the moment.)

Check to see how busy the beach is before you head out with this webcam of Jacobs Ladder! Jacob’s Ladder is the name of the area at the western end of

Anyone got fairly specific forecast info for the (south-east) London area? Saw a couple of references to City airport upthread, I live near there. Frequently see planes coming in, going out, and circling. Thursday always sounds like one of their busiest days! My friend teaches at a local primary and has been told a school trip into central London is to go ahead, so a bit worried about her 😕 Another local primary has cancelled a 5-a-side away date they had scheduled for tomorrow, so schools within the borough are taking different decisions.

notimagain · 01/11/2023 21:17

which airports are likely to remain open, although very windy, and roughly when?

Normally UK airports don't close for simply for strong winds unless things are so bad there's a risk to life on the ground (probably why Guernsey and Jersey are effectively closed ATM..definitely an outlier).

What normally happens is the airport stays open and it's down to the airlines whether they continue operations and then down individual flight's crew to take off or land having paid due regard to their defined wind limits.

In any event it looks to me ATM as the worse of the winds may well hit the southern UK airports overnight and first part of the AM tomorrow, so I think the early arrivals into places like Gatwick and Heathrow may be in for some fun and games.

Did a few go-arounds over the years....it's actually not that exciting "up front" (you do lots of them as part of initial and recurrent training) but I guess they can feel more dramatic down the back

YesitsBess · 01/11/2023 21:18

We've got an announcement at 6am on whether school is open or not (my teacher friends are saying not a chance). Am worried about my Nan down the road in Selsey (who has dementia) forgetting that I've told her not to go and get her paper tomorrow morning! Hoping her carers can get to her as well.

It's grim here at the moment but nothing worse than we've had recently yet. Although I did just open the balcony doors to see what was occurring and now have rain on the inside of my glasses somehow...

Nothing to see at the moment but when it gets light tomorrow, a due west facing camera in Jersey (assuming it's still attached to the building by then).

Not in Cornwall but I follow Kernow weather on Facebook. They're great with the explanations and have put up some scary looking weather maps today.
They're also are updating almost hourly.
Might be worth a look if you're Cornwall way on.
Just checked the Pentewan webcam. Absolutely wild weather.
Stay safe everyone.

I'm on their FB group too. ( Kernow Wather Team) Excellent information, well explained and friendly too.

Vitriolinsanity · 01/11/2023 21:20

Eerily quiet in the SE. There is almost no breeze.

Crossing everything for everyone though as it looks like it's the calm before the storm.

Somuchgoo · 01/11/2023 21:21

What do you the chances are of disruption continuing into Friday? We have a very important hospital appointment with my young child on Friday, we'd need to set off at 6am, and will be traveling along the south coast. Everything indicates the storm ending before then but I'm starting to worry and wonder whether travelling on Thursday evening and staying over would be better?

Swimbikerunmummy · 01/11/2023 21:22

@Sideorderofchips what did you put in your go bag? My DH thinks I’m worrying unnecessarily but am tempted to get something together quietly….

AdoraBell · 01/11/2023 21:25

I’ve put candles, tea lights, and matches on the kitchen counter, with old glass jars from deserts so they can’t get knocked over. Phone is charging now and power pack fully charged. Groceries delivered this afternoon so we have things to eat if the power goes. Fully electric here and the BBQ has a wheel missing so it’s unstable 🤦‍♀️

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2023 21:25

Wind getting up now in Plymouth.

SequentialAnalyst · 01/11/2023 21:26

Thanks for info on airports. Cold and clear here in the NE of England. I have just seen the incoming flight from Tenerife going over, due to land at Newcastle Airport in about 10min.✈ [(supposed to be a planeHmm)

CaveMum · 01/11/2023 21:27

@GloriaSmud the link you posted is saying I’ve got to wait 5,000 seconds for the camera to load - guess there are a few more people than normal watching 🤣

GloriaSmud · 01/11/2023 21:27

And a webcam at Dawlish (have to click on the arrow to open a new window) ~ having their new sea defences tested. I've seen a train in the last few minutes going along the seafront so they haven't stopped those just yet.

@PuzzledObserver herts us due rain from midnight and some blustery winds-that's about it.

GloriaSmud · 01/11/2023 21:30

@CaveMum ~ the numbers keeps going up! The Dawlish one works ok though.

RagzRebooted · 01/11/2023 21:32

Managed to time dropping off DS1's GF before the rain came back. DS1 is on L plates and I let him drive back, it started raining heavily just as we pulled into our road and is on and off now.
DH is out for his night shift on the roads. We'd hoped he'd be called off as he's working road works on motorways at the moment, usually driving a sweeper truck, tonight he's on a water bowser. He's working up near London though, so they might not have as bad weather up there. He got a flat tyre just after setting off and is hoping in the few hours it takes for recovery and replacement, that the tarmac team will have called the job off!
If not, he's likely to be finishing and driving back the yard around 3-5am, which won't be pleasant as we're in the orange warning zone from 6am (E. Sussex).

I'm a bit disappointed the forecast doesn't have thunder and lightning any more, when I checked earlier we were due some around 12-3am. Though really I should be sleeping, I'll likely be up worrying about DH if he's not rained off.

@Sideorderofchips what did you put in your go bag? My DH thinks I’m worrying unnecessarily but am tempted to get something together quietly….

We always have one ready because...you just never know? It's right by the door. Could be a house fire, anything.

Cash, pre paid debit card, foil blankets, water, SOCKS AND PANTS, tiny packaged plastic cagoules, kendal mint cake and those bloody awful fisherman biscuits, paracetamol, small first aid kit, antiseptic gel, spare car key, spare glasses, spare inhaler. Nokia brick phone, toothpaste and brushes, deodorant, saline, eyedrops and a few other bits, all in a small backpack.

Passports/important paperwork are in a lock box in my room. Worst comes to worst I just grab the box.

My son on the other hand would most likely grab his Xbox 😂

SequentialAnalyst · 01/11/2023 21:32

@GloriaSmud I love Dawlish, my DGM lived there so we'd go down every year. Haven't been back for ages, am afraid of disappointment. Though I think it would be hard to spoil Coryton Cove. It's in my plan for next year, though.

Camera one not working, but Wow, Camera two is! With wind noises!

Knackeredhamster · 01/11/2023 21:33

Southern most Devon here, coast is 5 miles in east, west and south direction from me.

There have been some almighty gusts in the last half an hour. The dog needs a wee but can't concentrate in the garden!

I've taken down our rotary line, secured garden stuff I hope.

itsgettingweird · 01/11/2023 20:13

You're literally where I am then !!!

I'm not fancying chances of getting anywhere tomorrow for most of the day!

@iitsgettingweird hi local friend! Wind battering my bedroom window here and it's raining heavily - my flat is grade 2 listed and only has single glazing so I'm likely in for a noisy, restless night!

Stay safe everyone, fingers crossed and thinking of those on the channel islands 🙏

SeaGlassTreasure · 01/11/2023 21:35

@Swimbikerunmummy I’m in Guernsey. I’m more concerned than DH. It sounds horrible outside. We’ve moved everything from outside into the shed, tried to move cars towards house and shed. Charged as much as we can. Tried to get a little more food than usual. Not sure what else to do.

JenniferBooth · 01/11/2023 21:37

If people have to go without power for days what happens to those on medical equipment at home. These storms have been a regular occurance every autumn for ten years now and the electricity distribution companies dont seem to be any further forward,
