Well summers over
OP posts:
RainbowZebraWarrior · 23/07/2023 09:20

My mother hates me for this, but I largely decree summer to be over once the six weeks holidays start. Spring is usually our best time, with May and June being the nicest months. August is always traditionally a high rainfall month, too.

Part of my weirdness is also probably that the longest day is in June, so psychologically I always think of the days 'cutting in' after that.

it may also be to do with me camping out on the Christmas bargain thread from late June omwards

I actually agree with this - as soon as tue clocls go forward in Spring l think make the most of it now!

eatdrinkandbemerry · 23/07/2023 09:21

My kids are still enjoying their pool in the rain and bbq under the gazebo 😂
Summer is definitely not over here 🤷‍♀️if life gives you lemons make lemonade 👍🏻

Such an ignorant comment. My ds is ND and HATES the rain with a passion. Will scream and flap if it hits him in the face. Even NT children would struggle to keep it together with the howling wind and sideways rain that's been battering us for the last few days. I think people have an idealised view of happy children splashing in puddles with umbrellas and a few scattered showers. In Devon the weather has been almost biblical.

You don’t get to throw out your own ignorant comments because you are upset. I’m sorry your child struggles with the rain.

ive just come back from a holiday that had sideways rain and wind but also pockets of sunshine and a pretty calm weather. You pick your moments. Perhaps you have to stay a little closer to home to make sure you can retreat back in side if necessary, but it’s not a catastrophe and we will all cope.

The picture in the OP was greyed out with a ‘sensitive content’ warning for me!

I am now feeling profoundly depressed.

Same here! Are we really at the stage we need trigger warnings for predicated rain?

We have had several mostly dry summers where I am in the SE for the last few years. Kids packing up for their first wet scout camp next week!

JoeLovesGina · 23/07/2023 09:25

I do hate the "dress appropriately and get out there" comments.

It's hard to sit outside a cafe with a cappuccino when it's pissing down. Or lay on the beach. Or do anything at all if you wear glasses because you can't see a thing.

I find it thoroughly miserable and depressing.

RudsyFarmer · 23/07/2023 09:25

ReeseWitherfork · 23/07/2023 09:10

It’s a totally different thing though isn’t it. The weather becomes the activity when it’s warm. It’s perfectly easy to chuck on wet weather gear and go and splash in puddles for a bit but it happens out of desperation to stop being inside really. Wet weather needs some serious planning if you’re going to spend notable time out in it. (As does hot weather, but a nice bit of warm sunshine is easy.)

Would it be worth picking up
an English Heritage membership or similar? There’s a 25% discount at the moment. Kids eat free in the cafes across August. It’s a great way to get out but also be undercover. Could be worth seeing how many attractions are local to you to see if it would be worth the outlay.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/07/2023 09:26

Sensitive comment lol. Ah well, not a great summer. Rather this than having our homes burned down as is happening in other places.

The south east has been ok, mostly dry all summer and I haven't taken a coat to work for months, I've worn sandals every day since the start of June. It's not a heat wave but it's nice enough. I do appreciate though that's not the case for the whole country and with younger children must be miserable. Lots of movie afternoons? 3 do cheap cinema tickets as do my work rewards so look into what you can get and use them if you can

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 23/07/2023 09:27

I'm really fed up with it and feel sorry for the kids who are off school. I'm in NI and the rain has been constant plus we aren't getting temperatures in the low 20s, more like mid to low teens. Yesterday I was wearing jeans and a jumper and ended up lighting the fire (to try and dry out very soggy trainers as I'm not putting the heating on to do that).
I don't want the heatwave but I'd really bloody like something in between; a sunny day or 10 to get the washing out, get DS out and about without needing waterproofs!

NuffSaidSam · 23/07/2023 09:29

Handsnotwands · 23/07/2023 09:15

to The rain and gloom lovers, what do you do when the weather’s like this?

Genuine question. I’ve got 3 kids to entertain between working. We have minimal money to do much. Fairly rural location so trips to swimming pools / cinema are quite expensive. And actually outside those two I’m drawing a blank.

ideally we’d be camping, in the garden, paddling in the stream, riding bikes. What can we actually do to make this holiday seem like a nice time?

none of us enjoy trudging around dank fields in raincoats

I think when you're rural the weather is much more important than when you live in a big town/city.

I'm from London, but briefly lived very rurally and couldn't believe how much the weather impacted plans/mood/ability to do anything. In London it's a bit shit if it's raining, but it mostly just means you need an umbrella when you walk to one of six million indoor activities. I don't think people necessarily understand if they haven't lived both ways.

Delatron · 23/07/2023 09:32

KnottyKnitting · 23/07/2023 08:31

Well of course the weather is shit- the kids just broke up from school!

Expect summer to come back around ... Grin September 3rd!

It’s been shit since the beginning of July though. It’s normally good until they break up.

HelpMeGetThrough · 23/07/2023 09:37

Not that anyone wants 40c heatwaves but no summer is horrible

I do, bring it on.

Oakbeam · 23/07/2023 09:37

It was 13 yesterday afternoon. In Oxfordshire, in July.

Delatron · 23/07/2023 09:39

And it’s been windy. I hate the wind. I would sit out in the high teens but not with that bastard wind.

Lucky you, having had "pockets of sunshine" and "pretty calm weather".

Why do people think their experience is the only possible one?

I've not seen a pocket of fucking sunshine for weeks now.

LlynTegid · 23/07/2023 09:42

It will either be sunny when the men's football season starts, or more likely in September once children resume school.

I'm personally happy with 20C in the day, over 10C at night, and sunshine at weekends.

MadamWhiteleigh · 23/07/2023 09:42

People going on about how awful it was last year! It was 40 degrees for two days! Rest of the time it was warm but within the realms of normal.

And this is the optimistic mindset you are bringing to your parenting journey?

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 23/07/2023 09:46

@eatdrinkandbemerry well said

Feckedupbundle · 23/07/2023 09:49

It's so depressing. We and other farmers haven't been able to get out hay in. It's blown flat to the ground by the wind and is rotting due to the non stop rain. I don't know how we are going to feed our livestock over winter and it will cost a huge amount of money to buy it in,if there is any available.

We can't wean our lambs because they normally go onto the hay field after baling,so now the ewes will not be in such good condition when the tups go in with them, which will affect conception rates and number of lambs conceived.

My horses have had laminitis and hoof abscesses for the first time ever, due to the constant wet.

Harvest is coming up,and if it isn't too wet to get onto the fields, the wheat will have to be dried, which will up the cost.
If this weather continues, food inflation is going to rocket.

floodywell · 23/07/2023 09:49

RudsyFarmer · 23/07/2023 09:44

"Parenting journey"?!

Give me strength.

My "parenting journey" is not affected by shitty weather, as my children are at university and beyond.

However, pissing awful weather makes me very miserable.

CloudPop · 23/07/2023 09:52

Delatron · 23/07/2023 08:27

I think we can all agree that 40 degrees is awful and y wants that. Doesn’t mean we can’t wish for a bit of warmth and less rain now. What about all those with UK holidays? Camping, weddings..

It doesn’t have to be either/or.

The thought of this then straight in to Autumn is depressing.

Exactly.

PoliticallyIncorrectHitchling · 23/07/2023 09:54

Happy that we dont have a heat wave. It was awful last summer. We need rain. No hose pipe ban this year will be great
