Amber warning for freezing rain tomorrow has been issued by the met office.
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2022-12-18&id=954fa30f-5c96-4d3d-9706-4484aac7d2bf

If you are in that region, prepare to change plans and not travel during the warning time. Be prepared for potential powercuts.

Oh heck, we live in Bradford and DH has to begin his commute at 1pm. I really wish he could not go but he is the only manager due to be on site for the late shift.
i can imagine it’s not going to be a smooth shift for him, managing a fleet of 30 vans, some going to very rural locations and using the motorways.

Oh I would never think bad thoughts of someone who was simply trying to help. I think we're going to try and leave as early as we can and hope for the best. If worst comes to the worst we will have to wait it out in the car. Keep your fingers crossed for me and anybody else having to make a journey tomorrow!

That would be my approach, if it helps.

I hope it goes well for him and that this doesn't come to pass.

@OhYouBadBadKitten me too, i’ve been hoping for a bit of snow, the kids are desperate to build a snowman 😂

But with DH having to travel tomorrow, i’m hoping we just get normal rain.

SeveruslyFrazzled · 17/12/2022 22:09

I hope this doesn’t affect Stoke on Trent as we are off to Alton Towers tomorrow for child’s birthday 🙈

OnTheBoardwalk · 17/12/2022 22:30

Anyone travelling to greater Manchester be careful

im now on the 12th hour waiting in A&E/minor care with a fractured ankle with a relative. Never seen anything like it, hundreds of people here all fallen on black ice today

Drs are saying they never seen anything like it either, that it’s worse than Covid at its peak

I'm meant to be doing a cross country run in Leeds tomorrow morning! Don't particularly want to run in freezing rain, but definitely don't want to drive in it! Oh heck!

AuntieEntity · 17/12/2022 23:04

I've got my work's Christmas lunch tomorrow and would love an opportunity to bail out - I wonder if freezing rain will suffice?!?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/12/2022 07:38

A bump for the morning crew in that region. Freezing rain is still very much possible. Take great care please when the rain arrives.

FWIW this morning's updated airport forecasts for Manchester and especially Leeds/Bradford don't make comforting reading.

The Manchester forecast has a high probability of a period of Freezing rain around lunchtime/early PM then becoming rain.

At Leeds/Bradford they've not bothered with a probability - supposedly there will definitely be periods of freezing rain throughout the afternoon into early evening.

These forecasts are only valid immediately around the airport so roads/motorways/towns etc may fare better or worse due to local effects and situation (e.g. elevation) but they provide a bit of a clue.

Good luck.

My journey was fine, no problems at all.
Lots of weather warnings and some extra speed limits, but the only actual bad bit was the pavement at Gretna Services, I got back in my car and drove to the next one!
It was getting busy as I left Wetherby though so glad I did it overnight.

ListenLinda · 18/12/2022 12:00

Lightly snowing in Bradford…

Maireas · 18/12/2022 13:56

Any updates? I hope there are no powercuts 🤞

notimagain · 18/12/2022 14:07

In the real world - don't know...in the virtual world the weather people removed the chance of Freezing Rain from Manchester airport's forecast for this afternoon when they did the scheduled re-run of predictions late AM.

Perhaps, just maybe, there's a thought it won't be quite as bad as was feared, at least at lower levels, on that side of the Pennines.

Freezing Rain is still in the Leeds Bradford airport forecast (last done three hours ago) and it certainly looks a bit nasty up there now - it's -1 celsius ATM, misty and raining..... fog forecast for later.

InMySpareTime · 18/12/2022 14:28

I'm not too far from Manchester Airport, and the rain here is just the normal wet drippy kind.

ListenLinda · 18/12/2022 15:03

Normal wet rain here too. Had about 5 flakes of snow earlier.

notimagain · 18/12/2022 15:19

The forecast freezing rain has finally appeared at Leeds Bradford (in their 1500 weather report ) but it's declared as being "light" so hopefully it won't amount to much or be widespread.

I'm so pleased Smile I hope everyone else has had similarly safe journeys. Thanks for the airport updates notimagain. I forgot to say that I wouldn't be able to update today. Real world stuff all day for me.

Lots of reports of slips and falls in my area. It has rained all day, no snow. Looks like lots of black ice around.
