Amber warning for freezing rain tomorrow has been issued by the met office.
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2022-12-18&id=954fa30f-5c96-4d3d-9706-4484aac7d2bf

If you are in that region, prepare to change plans and not travel during the warning time. Be prepared for potential powercuts.

Rain that froze when it hit the ground, I mean, rather than freezing rain. Forgot to quote relevant sentence

@OhYouBadBadKitten Is this what they call an ice storm?

Yes they do in the US. They have a lot more of it than the UK

SaturnaliaCalling · 17/12/2022 15:24

Well that's my daughter's trip home before Christmas cancelled! Too risky.

Io Saturnalia!

We have that today here in Ireland. Its been really frosty all week and I have managed but today its the first time I have experienced this freezing rain.

The roads really are treacherous. I went out at 11am and came back at 2pm and the roads are still so slippy, even when crawling. I've heard of so many traffic accidents too this morning but thought it would be ok if I went out later in the day.

Will be staying home now til the temps pick up.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/12/2022 16:53

TheNeverEndingDrama - your issue I think was rain falling onto frozen surfaces, which is very nasty, but not quite the same.

There is a more general ice warning out across most of England and Wales too tomorrow where rain falls onto frozen surfaces.

We found that for instance a few years ago, our car became impossible to get into as it was covered with a glaze of ice. Our house windows were also encased in see through ice.

Just going to repeat my tip to get into a frozen solid car (if any of you absolutely have to) from the other thread.
Hairdryer (preferably an old or spare one) on an extension lead make sure you use a circuit breaker set the dryer on slow and low and start with the lock and handle, then work your way around the rubber seals. Keep it pointing down so no drips get into it.
Also handy for getting stuck wipers of a windscreen.

I’m on crutches and meant to be heading to Newcastle tomorrow with friends 🤔

I wouldn't. You don't want to spend hours in A&E upgrade from crutches to a wheelchair for Christmas. Xmas Shock

FanniesFlaps · 17/12/2022 19:06

i’ve seen this once before. It was an absolute nightmare getting home. Happened so fast as well.

808Kate1 · 17/12/2022 19:10

I've only experienced an ice storm once when in NYC, and it's like knives hitting your face and best avoided at all costs! Really, really horrible especially if it's windy

BobbinThreadbare123 · 17/12/2022 19:14

We've just had this in the Lakes. We've already had a thick layer of treacherous slushy stuff in the early hours of this morning, and it's just added to it. I was supposed to be going to a party but I would rather not join the list of today's car accidents in this area 😑

ListenLinda · 17/12/2022 19:43

After this thread, I’ve told DH to be extra careful tomorrow on his way to work.
And to brief his drivers too to take extra care (seeing as they will still be sent out!).

I’m hoping to get the food shop done and back home before the snow starts then the freezing rain comes.

ListenLinda · 17/12/2022 19:43

I should add he thinks I’m overreacting and he has got the death stare from me.

worriedworriedworried22 · 17/12/2022 20:03

We have to travel to Manchester from North East tomorrow due to an early flight Monday am. Any recommendations for the best time to drive? We're thinking of travelling Sunday morning?

Third person saying don’t bother.

You’ll maybe end up in A&E with a more severe injury.

My nana once slipped on ice when at Butlins and broke both her wrists (she was drunk) and I’ve heard of people slipping on icy basement flat steps and breaking their necks so anything with ice etc I’m very careful with.

UrsulaPandress · 17/12/2022 20:18

I’m taking a tub of salt and being taken door to door …

UrsulaPandress · 17/12/2022 20:20

@worriedworriedworried22 I’ll wave at you going the other way.

It's really tricky. The warning is out from 9am tomorrow and you risk driving straight into it. For example, my best guess is it would hit the Bradford area (for example) late morning or early afternoon. How long will your journey take and what time can you set off?

OP posts:
worriedworriedworried22 · 17/12/2022 20:39

Our journey takes about 2 hours and we are hoping to set off at 9am. So worrying as not sure what to do for the best. We weren't going to set off until the afternoon but think it will be worse then.

Not sure why you think that but our weather guide specifically warned us of 'freezing rain' and one shared the exact same graphic you had in your second post to explain the freezing rain so I would say it is the same issue and you have misinterpreted something in my post.

OlleOskiFelle · 17/12/2022 20:44

I'm hoping to avoid the freezing rain by leaving at 3am, and the roads will mainly be lorries so quiet, plus gritted as main used frequented by said lorries.
I've done several overnight drives this year so not massively worried, though will be careful.
I have half my house in the car so plenty of warm stuff.

I'm very sorry for getting it wrong. You are obviously correct, I misinterpreted the synoptics, not you.

I wish I knew what to advise, but I'm concerned that I would give you the wrong advice and either you'd end up driving into a nasty situation or twiddling your thumbs all day thinking bad thoughts about me!

OP posts:
worriedworriedworried22 · 17/12/2022 21:08

Oh I would never think bad thoughts of someone who was simply trying to help. I think we're going to try and leave as early as we can and hope for the best. If worst comes to the worst we will have to wait it out in the car. Keep your fingers crossed for me and anybody else having to make a journey tomorrow!
