WATER SHORTAGE--NOT MY NEIGHBOUR!

Scoobydoobydo · 12/08/2022 12:29

Neighbour is currently filled the childrens pool with water from her hosepipe.
It's not a piddly paddling pool for them to sit in. Oh no it's so blooming big it has steps to get into!
It was already full from the weekend but they didn't put the cover over it so it wasn't the cleanest. The kids wouldn't care would they? But Mummy had to empty the pool and refill just as we are being asked to be careful with water and some area are being declared a draught.
I'm sat here seething 😡
And no I won't say anything to her because it wouldn't make any difference

OP posts:

I think sitting there seething is a bit much if you're not in a hosepipe ban area. She's not actually doing anything wrong if you're still allowed to use hosepipes.

We did this today. I made my husband check we weren't in a hosepipe ban area and we aren't apparently so I thought it was fine. Should we not have?

RainbowsMoonbeams · 12/08/2022 16:28

Seething Really?!

withgraceinmyheart · 12/08/2022 16:36

Ah ok if you’re a hosepipe ban area YANBU. Apologies for assuming. Put that in the OP next time as a lot areas (especially in the North) are not.

ImAvingOops · 12/08/2022 17:04

The water companies won't be giving refunds to customers who pay for a water supply which is now being restricted. Yes, she's dumb as fuck to not have covered the pool in the first place and kept the water she already used, but I can't be seething about this when so much water is lost in leaks.

Cookiecrumble22 · 12/08/2022 17:17

I have a pool like this. My water has been in for around a month. She needs chemicals and a pool net. Maybe she didn't realise. Maybe let her know that if she switches on her pump. And gets chemicals from amazon and a net. She won't have to change the water again. Its more hassle to emptying and refill.

Is there a hosepipe ban in your area?

This.
Not mentioned in the original post so can't pass judgement really.

CakeCrumbs44 · 12/08/2022 18:13

Scoobydoobydo · 12/08/2022 16:23

We are in a hosepipe ban area but do they ever follow it up?
They could say they used buckets
No proof of hosepipe ... apart from its moist

Take a photo of her filling it up, if you feel strongly about it.

If you want to be worked up, have a HUGE go at the water companies who are key ing 1/4of the water going to waste because of leaks they never repaired.

If instead if giving millions of pounds to shareholders etc…. They were actually doing what they are supposed to do - maintaining the whole system, then we wouldn’t need a hosepipe ban!!

Maybe it’s time to direct our anger towards the right people.

Just like when people are getting angry at other people going to A&E ‘when they shouldn’t do because you know we don’t have the resources’ blabla instead if getting angry at the government for not budgeting enough for the NHS and wasting billions on unusable PPE etc….

etc etc etc….

This!!!!

A580Hojas · 12/08/2022 18:19

It's possible to be seething with the water companies for losing so much water, and seething selfish fucking individuals.

I fall into this camp. Neighbours had their sprinkler on today to water their garden at noon. In London. Stupid fucking idiots.

mum11970 · 12/08/2022 18:39

Thank you, you’ve just reminded me to water my raised beds and dh has stuck the sprinkler on the lawn.

Omg evil B*
seriously a sprinkler it’s a heatwave , like others say if the water companies had fixed leaks like they should of done. I’m not going to start seething about sprinklers and kids paddling pools . Are you the same people reporting neighbours for breaking lockdown rules ? . That worked out well didn’t it when out leaders were doing it all along .

worriedatthistime · 12/08/2022 18:40

But of on a water meter they are paying for it , we loose more water in leaks than anything else , whilst water companies make huge profits etc so theres the real problem

NCHammer2022 · 12/08/2022 18:42

If you’re in a ban area, shop her for a fine. If you’re not, grit your teeth and bear it.

worriedatthistime · 12/08/2022 18:43

Also should of mentioned in a hosepipe ban area as many places aren't incl where I am
In the SW and they said we are not likely to have one

JudgeRindersMinder · 12/08/2022 18:45

And so it fucking begins 🙄

Icantstopeatinglol · 12/08/2022 18:55

If there is a hosepipe ban as others have said report and don't think anymore on it. Frustrating but do your bit and let them crack on.
I work for a water company and a lot of things are frustrating in regard to the talk of leakages etc. Prices are set by OFWAT and the money created from this goes towards fixing leaks etc. However a huge amount of money is spent on blockages etc which comes from people flushing things down the toilet they shouldn't and a lot of money is spent on advertising etc to stop this behaviour. Add on to this the misuse of water during dry spells and this is why charges go up. If we all took responsibility for our actions it would save the water companies money and they could spend the money in the right areas (leakages, reducing costs). We're constantly trying to find ways to reduce costs for customers so we don't want to increase prices (at least at my level we don't). So much goes into water and sewerage companies that people don't realise.

You'll be the first to complain when water - and subsequently food- prices rise though, won't you?

worriedatthistime · 12/08/2022 19:05

@Icantstopeatinglol but its a known fact companies havs water leaks and pay huge dividends
There you go I can automatically decrease bills by paying less to shareholders , ceo's , bonuses etc
These big companies have no excuses , too easy to blame people

worriedatthistime · 12/08/2022 19:07

@Icantstopeatinglol I pay around £70 a month for water , ridiculous amount and we have a tiny garden so no hosepipe , family of 4 , reuse water, have a dishwasher etc
So I won't fill guilty filling a pool that we will the use to water the garden for a few days , when the ceo/ shareholders make huge profits
Luckily our water company has no hospipe ban or plans for one

gettingolderandgrumpy · 12/08/2022 19:07

They already have done ! British mentality let’s blame the ndn for filling the paddling pool up yes it’s all get her fault.

Icantstopeatinglol · 12/08/2022 19:12

Hey I totally agree with the fact that the money taken out of water companies isn't right. My pension has been impacted massively while shareholders take their money out. However we still can make an impact which affects the environment regardless of how you look at it. The people who are trying their best to run these companies are doing so to the best of their abilities and resources are being used in areas which could be avoided to then be able to focus on the areas such as leakages (which they do but could do better if they weren't focused on blockages).

Cookiecrumble22 · 12/08/2022 19:24

It's hot, my kids are loving it.

We live on an island. Could we actually run out of water ? Have we ever ran out of water ?

WATER SHORTAGE--NOT MY NEIGHBOUR!
Riapia · 12/08/2022 19:40

OP you would be well within your rights to go round undercover of darkness and piss in their pool.
After having a quick dip of course. 😁

Spanielsarepainless · 12/08/2022 19:43

Neighbour had his lawn sprinkler running all Monday afternoon.

Inklingpot · 12/08/2022 19:45

IcedOatLatte · 12/08/2022 13:07

Why would anyone do that when there are presumably ways provided by water companies to report breaches of drought orders. It doesn't appear that the OP is in one of those areas but why the stupid suggestion to a serious current issue?

Give me strength.

Since I clearly have to explain what I thought would be a fairly obvious joke:

There is a long-standing joke that MN posters overly often tell other posters to report the most trivial things to 101 ‘to get it logged’. There have previously been joking comments that there is a special hotline for MNers to report their trivial issues.

The ‘report them, hun’ attitude was particularly prevalent during the covid lockdowns when numerous MNers got upset about their perception that people were breaking lockdown and repeatedly posted threads along the lines of ‘my neighbour has had a mysterious stranger round, should I report them?’

Now that I’ve wasted too much time explaining my comment, are you content with this description or do you feel you need to miss the point some more?
