WATER SHORTAGE--NOT MY NEIGHBOUR!

Scoobydoobydo · 12/08/2022 12:29

Neighbour is currently filled the childrens pool with water from her hosepipe.
It's not a piddly paddling pool for them to sit in. Oh no it's so blooming big it has steps to get into!
It was already full from the weekend but they didn't put the cover over it so it wasn't the cleanest. The kids wouldn't care would they? But Mummy had to empty the pool and refill just as we are being asked to be careful with water and some area are being declared a draught.
I'm sat here seething 😡
And no I won't say anything to her because it wouldn't make any difference

According to the BBC website today, my area is fine. We've had quite a lot of rain and are now enjoying this spell of sun. I absolutely will continue to use a hosepipe to water my hanging baskets and I will also fill our paddling pool if I want to.
If your area is struggling, then that's because you've had a lovely long hot spell. We haven't.
But now, because the rest of the country is struggling, we're 'morally' expected to restrict our use.
When my water board asks me to be careful, I'll follow their instructions - but why would I restrict when they're not asking me to?!

"lovely long hot spell" 🤨 Do you mean drought?

Damnautocorrect · 12/08/2022 15:11

“Lovely long spell”

dry autumn, dry winter, dry spring, dry summer

yeah it’s been lovely

oldwhyno · 12/08/2022 15:16

If there's a hosepipe ban report her. If not, stfu.

faffadoodledo · 12/08/2022 15:28

Ask her next time she empties if you could run a hose siphon from it to water your garden. Passive aggressive but might deliver a message. And she might agree! Bingo! Free water for your garden.

abovedecknotbelow · 12/08/2022 15:32

My water company leaked 24% of the water in it's system last year. There were three burst water mains near me yesterday. Filling a paddling pool isn't going to make a jot of difference.

MineIsBetterThanYours · 12/08/2022 12:54

If you want to be worked up, have a HUGE go at the water companies who are key ing 1/4of the water going to waste because of leaks they never repaired.

If instead if giving millions of pounds to shareholders etc…. They were actually doing what they are supposed to do - maintaining the whole system, then we wouldn’t need a hosepipe ban!!

Maybe it’s time to direct our anger towards the right people.

Just like when people are getting angry at other people going to A&E ‘when they shouldn’t do because you know we don’t have the resources’ blabla instead if getting angry at the government for not budgeting enough for the NHS and wasting billions on unusable PPE etc….

etc etc etc….

Soooo, two wrongs don't make a right do they?

It certainly would do if everyone one took that entitled attitude.

Chewbecca · 12/08/2022 15:37

Is there a hosepipe ban in your area?

Rapidtango · 12/08/2022 15:38

Abovedecknotbelow, many of the current water leaks and burst mains are being caused by drought conditions and movement in the ground cracking pipes. Just because the water companies don't (can't) fix all the leaks doesn't mean everyone should be blasé about water usage. This stuff affects us all one way or another.

ohfook · 12/08/2022 15:43

If you don't have a hosepipe ban where you are, it's not really a problem is it?
It's just you passing a moral judgement on someone else's behaviour.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/08/2022 15:44

It does seem a bit daft wherever you live.

we filled our pool (a 12’ circular one, no frame or steps) at the start of July. It’s got a pump, chlorine thing floating in it and a cover and it’s still lovely and clean despite the kids using it most days.

nicknamehelp · 12/08/2022 15:50

Our neighbours filled there's the other weekend when 2 streets away had no water for 3 days due to burst main. I know legally they can but morally feels very wrong to me and as no kids in their house and they work full time so far I've only seen them use it a few times. Although was v tempted to dive in over the fence this afternoon (I settled for a quick cool shower)

amylou8 · 12/08/2022 15:52

The problem is the water companies wasting 1/4 of the supply because they haven't fixed leaking pipes for decades, not your neighbour filling up her padding pool with the water she pays for.

MassiveSalad22 · 12/08/2022 15:54

Whaaaat? That’s madness. Surely the point of having a pool that big (big enough to need steps, I’m assuming a steel-framed pool?) is that you use a filter and only need to fill it up once per summer. So actually much better for the planet than a regular paddling pool (plus don’t bloody pop like all our other paddling pools did! Thank god for inflatable amnesty companies!). She needs a cover and a net to fish out any dirt. Selfish woman!

Charles11 · 12/08/2022 15:56

Just like during covid - some people would love to live in a Police State.

withgraceinmyheart · 12/08/2022 15:58

I’m guessing there isn’t a hosepipe ban where you live, otherwise you’d have have reported her instead of huffing on here.

I’ve filled the paddling pool today with the hose. It rained all last week here and we’re in an area that isn’t being considered for a ban.

Tell me again why we shouldn’t be using our hoses? Solidarity?

Scoobydoobydo · 12/08/2022 16:19

@lickenchugget

I think this is highly unlikely
The average household uses approx 350 litres a day
This pool is 9584 litres

British people are incredibly entitled and selfish. Can you not throw a dart at the side of her paddling pool through the night?

Loving this but it's one of those huge rigid side thingies

If it was a weeny paddling pool I'd not be that bothered tbh

This is the new going out during lock down thing isn't it? Poster seething in caps no less about someone else doing something that's a current topic when really what she is doing is congratulating herself on what a good person she is

A GOOD PERSON!
why thank you

If there is a hosepipe ban, then you can report her if you so wish (it's a £1000 fine in my area if I remember correctly)

If there is no hosepipe ban, she is within her rights to do this with the water she pays for.

We are in a hosepipe ban area but do they ever follow it up?
They could say they used buckets
No proof of hosepipe ... apart from its moist

Report her to Greta Thunberg. And the Queen.

Done

Love how the OP is neglecting to answer whether there is a hosepipe ban. We have a lovely big one (admittedly we use a filter and chlorine so hasn't needed emptying). We have bathed the kids much less because of it!

Magicandspiders · 12/08/2022 16:26

Ah. You've just said you are. In which case- she is being unreasonable.

whenwillthemadnessend · 12/08/2022 16:26

She just answered and yes they are
