General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

Our mediterranean tortoises are out there living their best lives. I'm not sure whether to keep them in on Mon/Tues or let them get on with it.

Same with mine, she's eating lettuce as if it's going out of fashion. I went out to check on her earlier and she was asleep in her water dish!

Joelijane · 16/07/2022 17:53

I haven't read all the threads so apologies if i'm repeating anything. I live in a 2 bed flat in London with a 5 and 3 year old. I am happy they are keeping schools and nurseries open as I have to work from home and my flat is far smaller than where they will be plus they have good provisions and measures in place. If I could be off work and had a garden and paddling pool I'd feel differently though. Hope to god there's no casualties.

Somethingneedstochange · 16/07/2022 18:01

Maybe if school's didn't force secondary school pupils to wear long sleeve shirts, ties and blazer's during a heatwave we wouldn't be having this discussion. A lot of modern British schools especially academies have a lot of windows. Great for letting the light in. Not so great when it's making the classroom an oven.

I don’t understand this thread or the panic 🙈
In another country here where we regularly have these temperatures for July & August. We have no air con in our house or car. On hot nights, we use a fan-you can buy one of these. Most neighbours shut their doors/windows/shutters in the day, we don’t as v English and they think we’re daft.
We don’t go sunbathing during the day, out early morning or evening. Dh works as normal, kids go to kids clubs.
No one dies. Life carries on.

I think the key word there is “regularly”, but I’m sure you know that.

Not seeing much panic here myself, maybe some concern at best, but the likelihood of reaching the highest temperature ever in the UK is definitely newsworthy. Again, I’m sure you know that, just wanted an excuse to sneer.

Bravo to you. Would you like a medal?

So many people choose, for 2 weeks a year to fly to countries with ‘extreme heat’ to enjoy a holiday. I’ve got several friends who have just come back from 40 degree + countries.
The elderly or those with conditions just need to stay out of the midday heat. Shut curtains and open windows and you’ll be ok.
I recommend Morrisons, was like a fridge when I was in there earlier!
Don’t get the hysteria. We’re not a very resilient country are we?

MrsGluck · 16/07/2022 18:21

I would challenge your assertion that no one dies @Feelsyuk

There probably are excess deaths from the hot weather, just like there are excess deaths in the winter in the UK. It may not be reported on, because it would be a regular thing, therefore not newsworthy.

And anyway, I would say that taking action to prevent people dying is a good thing.

CrunchyCarrot · 16/07/2022 18:27

Also brushed the cat, to get rid of her extra hair.

Ours went and rolled in the dust somewhere and came in grey and black instead of white and black!! Duly brushed, LOL. Got a cool pet mat for him, don't know if he'll use it. We do have a cool kitchen lino so that will help.

I also made my cat diluted tuna juice ice blocks so he can try those out starting tomorrow! :D

We live on the edge of the Pennines and I have never, ever seen a forecast for 37 degrees for our village before.

I shall go to the air conditioned office in my air conditioned car on Tuesday.

My sympathies to anyone who doesn't have this option, and to people who live in flats in cities.

Is this not part of the problem? We used ti just open windows which didn't use any energy, now we all turn up the aircon and make the situation worse in the long run.

AnybodyAnywhere · 16/07/2022 18:30

A friend of mine phoned from Australia this morning to indulge in a little light hearted piss taking re the weather 🙄

We went on to talk of other things and after a while I asked her how their Winter weather was doing. She said that it’s unusually cold in the mornings, 3 or 4° some days, and how she’s so cold that she can’t get out of bed and it’s really intolerable. I ‘gently’ pointed out that’s a pretty normal early morning temperature here for about 6 months of the year and we wouldn’t bat an eye. Satisfying 😊

Nobody flies off for two weeks a year to a country with extreme heat to enjoy going to work and school there.

Well, we’d be complete idiots to be opening up our windows to 40c heat.

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 16/07/2022 18:36

I’m in school teaching. My classroom is the hottest one in school as it’s south facing and gets the sun all day long. I have 32 children in my class, plus me and the electronics (laptop, huge interactive whiteboard). We were sent the heatwave risk assessment last weekend and it says that we should be provided with fans. I asked three different members of the leadership team for one last week as it was already 30C in my classroom. I still don’t have one. One of them told me to buy my own fan!

Several children were feeling sick because they were so hot last week so I have no idea what it will be like on Monday and Tuesday.

Teaching unions suggest that temps above 26C is unacceptable, given the number of heat emitting bodies in a small space. No-one seems to care though 😕

But plenty of people do go to work and school there. Honestly, we are going to have two days of very hot weather. The government have issued guidance for what to do. This thread is 16 PAGES long. Of course that's ridiculous and hysterical. What is this post going to reveal that a quick Google search couldn't?

Pricklesinperil · 16/07/2022 18:36

BruisedSkies · 15/07/2022 11:09

It’s good, if people can, to put bowls of water out for wildlife in this heat. I put it out the front for the foxes and hedgehogs and birds. We have a pond in the garden but not everything can get into our garden, so out the front is good too.

Thank you @BruisedSkies if anyone needs any help or advice, we have this thread running Please leave out water for hedgehogs

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/07/2022 18:38

I'm starting to feel rather riled by those coming on to sneer.

We have warnings from the UKHSA and the Met Office that there will be significant impact from these temperatures. There will be deaths. I can cite various studies that clearly demonstrate that heatwaves cause excess deaths. But there's no point in me citing them, because no matter what I say, some people will argue back.

There will be damage to infrastructure, including rail and roads. The damage will have an impact that lasts beyond the heatwave.

There is a reason that COBRA meetings have been called all week. They are implementing the Heatwave plan assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1091292/Heatwave_Plan_for_Engand_2022_July_2022.pdf precisely because it is needed.

Now you can go off and live your ignorant lives, pretending all is fine because you close your eyes to any news information that shows you are wrong. You can carry on tutting and telling us we've all turned soft etc. But this is a thread about the national emergency that has been declared. It is the first time ever and for good reason.

You are cluttering it up with your nonsense and making it difficult for people to actually swap advice and information that will help get them, their vulnerable neighbours and family through this. Its both irritating and irresponsible. There are plenty of threads for you to join without swamping out the actually helpful posts.

Now I'm off out for the evening.

I don’t understand this thread or the panic

I don't understand why posters come onto a serious thread on the Weather board and falsely accuse others of 'panic' and generally throw their weight around like the worst of the utter berks on AIBU.

AIBU is that way >>>>

Supergirl1958 · 16/07/2022 18:42

Any advice for a person going on a school trip in the open air :(

Feelsyuk · 16/07/2022 18:44

@NCHammer2022 Newsworthy, definitely. The headlines the papers have been putting out?! really, is this in proportion?
Definitely not trying to be sneery, but honestly don’t believe people should be being constantly scared all the time

Jo586 · 16/07/2022 18:46

I guess people are pointing out the complete overreaction of the press on a couple of hot days, ambulances catching fire etc etc. Bit like an inch of snow, we can get through this, I am confident, I have not updated my will recently, is this a mistake do you think?

Er, it's No. 1 on Trending. I doubt anyone sought out the 'weather' board. I'm not sure panicking, which is what 99% of this thread is doing, will actually help ANYONE. It would actually be more helpful for posters to tell everyone to calm down, prepare yourselves and ride it out. But sorry to disturb your 'serious' discussions on the weather board.

Feelsyuk · 16/07/2022 18:48

@GyozaGuiting Exactly, this thread is quite worrying.

Feelsyuk · 16/07/2022 18:49

@StepAwayFromGoogling All the anxiety here, it’s crazy, I honestly don’t get it

kennyp444 · 16/07/2022 18:51

Thank god I had this installed at my house last year. Bring on the furnace! 😂
