Heating up this week

Looks like Wed, Thur, Fri could be heating up quite a bit in some parts of the UK. I am in Surrey and one weather app is showing 30 degrees for Friday 17th June 2022.

Any tips for keeping home cool? I think having lots of airflow in the evening and early morning, then closing up tight can help but may get stuffy inside.

We have 23 degrees forecast for Friday, then it's going downhil after that Sad

Sorry, that wasn't very helpful.

A good tip is to open up your loft as heat rises. Windows open at the front and back to get a decent through draft helps as well. And close curtains where the sun comes in.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/06/2022 08:30

The models show varying levels of heat, from extreme, to high 20s for the end of the week for much of the south. Potentially with storms on Saturday. The length of the highest heat thankfully at the moment looks brief.

My general rule, is unless there is a good breeze, then windows close when the temperature outside is hotter than inside. Curtains closed and as you say, windows open early and late in the day.

If you have space in a big freezer, then pillows in the freezer can help for sleep.

Buy your fans now and paddling pools now rather than when it gets hot Wink

Forecast seems to be wrong a lot these days. I'm fairly sure it was more accurate in the past. I'm glad we've escaped a heatwave so far - peri has changed my tolerance completely. Different websites are spreading the heat over different days it seems.

nannynick · 12/06/2022 16:23

I have brought more ice lollies. Will see if the weather forecasts come to some agreement by middle of the week.

I'll believe it when I see it. It's been blowing a gale here in the NW for weeks now. Every day we're promised sun then it turns into rain and strong winds. The garden is wrecked from the high winds. And its playing havoc with my migraines.

I wonder if forecasts are getting less accurate because things are getting more unpredictable, which I'm guessing is related to climate change.

EmmaH2022 · 12/06/2022 23:03

I’m totally guessing but I reckon algorithmic things are causing the forecasts to be less accurate. Fancy new methods are being rolled out in many areas without being ready. About five years ago, the forecasts were so accurate, at least a few days in advance. I used to plan activities round them. Now it’s quite common to be wrong even the night before, I find.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/06/2022 06:13

Which forecasts by whom do people think are less accurate than they used to be? Where are people getting their forecasts from?

cliffdiver · 13/06/2022 06:29

Throughout the day, I open windows and partially close blinds to keep bedrooms cool for bedtime.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 13/06/2022 07:03

I hope it doesn't. Over 20 is too hot for me plus the brightness and insects = v uncomfortable.

RampantIvy · 13/06/2022 07:05

My optimum temperature is about 25 degrees. I am looking forward to cracking out my summer clothes.

Xcweather now has the heatwave resuming next week (London). I hope not.

avamiah · 16/06/2022 02:59

I’m in London and it is really warm now and uncomfortable to sleep as there is hardly any breeze ( cool air).It is going to be the hottest day ever in 12 hours with temperatures reaching high 80’s and over .

nannynick · 16/06/2022 09:06

Indoors, 21 degrees, in the shade, at 9am. Looks like it will be a warm day where I am.

I don't think it will be the hottest day ever, we had this in 2018 or 2019?

i woke up and could immediately tell today is going to be bad.

i'm so relieved we go this far without a repeat of 2018, that was hell.

I should have moved out of this oven by now but sadly it fell through. Fingers crossed for not living in an oven next year.

sorry, that was off topic. Sympathies to all on the Tube today and tomorrow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/06/2022 11:46

It's possible that we might record the hottest June day ever tomorrow, but it's not certain and I'm not convinced it will be. We have to go back to 1976 when it reached 35.6c in Southampton on one day.

Fwiw, I think temperatures are most likely to be around 33-34c around the central south, east Midlands area, but take that with the extra pinch of salt you need for all the sweating.

Shock
EmmaH2022 · 17/06/2022 08:59

Still hoping it won't be so bad

i felt a bit ill yesterday - the flat is an oven - but around 2am, they said it would be 18c and it wasn't. Ir's meant to be 24 now and it isn't. And there's a nice breeze. So very much hope 34 is not going to happen.

EmmaH2022 · 17/06/2022 14:23

Does anyone have any thoughts on tomorrow in London? Accuweather going for 27, Xcweather going for 23. Have a long Tube journey.

nannynick · 17/06/2022 14:48

Current Weather report: Surrey/Berkshire border 29.4 degrees, Humidity 40%.

@EmmaH2022 I am going to go with cloudy, 23 ish, showers late evening.

It's 32 here in Sw London. @EmmaH2022 it says it will be 24 tomorrow. My daughter has a long tube journey today!

JessieEssex · 17/06/2022 15:04

My home weather station says 33.5 and 30% humidity (North West Essex)

EmmaH2022 · 17/06/2022 15:10

Thanks nanny

Easy I feel for her, I hate the Tube at the best of times.

Jessie I don't intend to venture out till much later, but that's interesting. I am guessing it's max 30 in my bit of London but it is just a guess.
