I know it will seem quite crackers to start this when the weekend has been so lovely, but we are starting to get some model consistency on GFS for the potential for snow Friday night into Saturday as a northerly plunge looks set to take place.

Primary risk areas are obviously for hillier parts of Scotland and also Wales, but higher ground in the south and south east including over dartmoor and down the east coast may also see some sleet or wet snow.

It hasn’t snowed properly on 2 Feb since 2009 (it’s DS’s birthday).

MorvahRising · 23/01/2019 19:43

Thanks for that Oubliette! Fingers crossed . . . . it can snow any other time!

TokyoSushi · 23/01/2019 19:44

Thanks @GloriaSmud - Ever hopeful!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 07:26

Looks like a nasty mix of sleet snow and freezing rain is moving into parts of east Anglia at the moment.

OublietteBravo · 24/01/2019 09:01

Really icy here this morning (Beds/Northants border). The rain has frozen onto the ground, and the pavements are treacherous.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 09:05

Take care Oubliette.
Last I looked at the radar it was forming a bit of a squall line as it crossed east Anglia. I'm away from my tablet now though.

Just driven through a light snow flurry in East Anglia (North Essex, near Colchester). Icy here still at the moment and the sky looks heavy so there could be more coming.

BishopBrennansArse · 24/01/2019 09:48

I had all of 10 flakes for the school run.
It's not fair, it's minus five, we have perfect DP and no precipitation!

TopBitchoftheWitches · 24/01/2019 09:49

Just started here in North Essex, slightly though.

GloriaSmud · 24/01/2019 11:26

It's looking cold next week. There might be some wintriness about.
That's all I'm going to say (at least until things are a bit more certain!)

gttia · 24/01/2019 19:45

Gloria you tease! Although I have looked at Twitter.....
One weather app says snow, one doesn't ha ha

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 19:48

as Gloria says, interesting potential next week.

gttia · 24/01/2019 22:05

I'm planning on just in case at work. Nhs community services, I always plan because then I'm ready for the worst!

brizzledrizzle · 25/01/2019 02:34

There will be NO snow next week because I have told the weather fairies that I will be driving into the back of beyond Wales on small country lanes and they have agreed it will be most inconvenient

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/01/2019 07:58

lol!
The GFS charts are adamant about snow potential, starting on Sunday as little pockets from the west, but more widespread from Tuesday onwards. It's coming from a polar maritime feed (ie north westerlies) so the temperatures look pretty marginal in the south, some parts of which are more likely to see rain rather than snow.
It's very different from Feb/march last year where weather was super cold coming in on easterlies.

Grace212 · 25/01/2019 08:43

ah so hoping for not snow....I think the crematorium will be all right if we reschedule but I feel like mum's been through more than enough without having to rearrange this.

GloriaSmud · 25/01/2019 11:55

Tweet from BBC weatherman Chris Fawkes this morning...

Next week has #snow potential for UK especially Tue 29th/Wed 30th. Latest EC puts snowmageddon into England & Wales, UKMO global less developed and more restrained. Take away message is snow potential is there, details about where and amounts are not!

Grace212 ~ thoughts and Flowers for you and your family. The last thing you all need is uncertainty about what the weather is going to do at this time.

Weather warnings for tomorrow and Sunday.

Latest metoffice Outlook...

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:
Colder, brighter and windy on Sunday with coastal wintry showers. Less windy on Monday and Tuesday but still cold and showery. Rain, possibly turning to snow in the south Tuesday.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 30 Jan 2019 to Friday 8 Feb 2019:
Sunshine and wintry showers on Wednesday, with these becoming more confined to eastern and perhaps southern areas. Otherwise, some sunshine around, before cloud and outbreaks of rain and hill snow will move into the west by the end of Wednesday. This will move east into Thursday, maintaining this changeable and at times unsettled and predominantly cold spell of weather. Snow is likely to lower levels at times, perhaps more so than during the cold weather so far as low pressure systems take a more southerly track towards Biscay, with overnight frost and ice remaining a risk too. There is still a small chance that even colder conditions may develop during early February with easterly or northeasterly winds dominating, bringing an increased possibility of disruptive snow.

UK Outlook for Saturday 9 Feb 2019 to Saturday 23 Feb 2019:
Cold or very cold conditions are likely to dominate the weather throughout this period, with a greater than average chance of easterly or northeasterly winds dominating. This would bring an enhanced risk of snow, as well as widespread and occasionally severe frosts, although the exact details remain very uncertain. In this setup, the driest and brightest weather is likely in the north and northwest. Despite the prevalence of cold weather, occasional milder interludes remain possible, most likely in the south, although the incursion of these introduce a significant risk of snow should very cold conditions become established.

GloriaSmud · 26/01/2019 08:22

Today's thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook. Noting this bit for next week...

"During Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday areas of low pressure move in from the Atlantic. They are expected to track further south than usual and that means much of the UK stays on their cold northern flank. There is the potential for significant snow in places but the details are uncertain. At the moment it looks as though the risk is greatest in areas north of the M4 corridor.

Towards the end of the week it remains changeable. Low pressure areas will be close to the UK but as they fill upper air temperatures rise, so the risk of snow becomes increasingly confined to the north."

nannynick · 26/01/2019 08:48

Wednesday this week, 9am, I have a snowflake symbol on Met Office app. Surrey, M3/M25 junction area.

Wonder if that will really happen or just a bit of wintery rain.

Frouby · 26/01/2019 09:02

We have the same snowflake nanny, and we are south yorkshire. It looks bloody cold next week, and ominously cloudy. Brrrrr.

Am going to spend the weekend battening down the hatches. Well, sorting the outside animals out anyway. Going to stock up on chicken feed and straw, fill some cannisters of water to leave in the shed to try and not have to lug water up from home, stock up on hay and straw for the guinea pigs, and dig the cover out of the home shed for them.

I have also emailed our council and asked for grit bins to be put out on the school run route. It was horrendous last week on thursday, 1 mum fell with her baby, kids slipping all over, mums couldn't get up and over the little bridge with their pushchairs. It was literally an ice rink and unless we go around which adds another mile or so, we won't be able to get to school if it's icey. I have a 4 x 4 so could possibly drive but parking is horrendous round school so we usually walk.

I doubt the council will do it though. I could go and buy some and grit it myself but grit is bloody heavy to lug around and my wheelbarrow has a flat tyre and it's a footpath mainly so could only get so close in the truck.

GloriaSmud · 26/01/2019 09:23

A poster on Netweather a few days ago (think it was Thursday), said that they're in contact with someone who works at the metoffice and the MO are going to decide over the weekend, whether there are going to be upgrades/downgrades/snow forecast for this coming week, so it might be worth keeping an eye on the metoffice website over the next day or two.

According to the BBC though (meteogroup), they've already decided we're going to have heavy snow Tuesday night/into Wednesday and Wednesday night/into Thursday so it'll be interesting what the MO do.

Pandasarecute · 26/01/2019 17:01

After a mild weekend BBC forecast for my area has now decided snow for this week! (Fingers crossed!) North west

flatpackbox · 26/01/2019 17:31

Lots of snow on the BBC forecast for North Yorkshire but nothing on the Met Office.
