I know it will seem quite crackers to start this when the weekend has been so lovely, but we are starting to get some model consistency on GFS for the potential for snow Friday night into Saturday as a northerly plunge looks set to take place.

Primary risk areas are obviously for hillier parts of Scotland and also Wales, but higher ground in the south and south east including over dartmoor and down the east coast may also see some sleet or wet snow.

Horsham - parameters pretty near perfect, dew point 0 surface temp 2 and falling but absolutely no precipitation to be seen!

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 22/01/2019 17:54

Still hammering it down, and settling ...

ScarlettDarling · 22/01/2019 18:22

Not a flake to be seen in Newcastle (thank goodness.)

TheVonTrappFamilySwingers · 22/01/2019 18:31

Big fat snow flakes here in SE london. Unlikely to settle though I'd say.

BishBoshBashBop · 22/01/2019 18:35

Big fat snowflakes now in the Midlands. Ground is to wet for it to settle though.

Vintagevixen · 22/01/2019 19:01

Snow in NE London/Essex borders. Big flakes and settling a little. Yahoo! ❄️😁😁

Grace212 · 22/01/2019 19:16

glad I cancelled the night out, would have been a mare walking from the station in this.

just hope pavements aren't too icy tomorrow.

Grace212 · 22/01/2019 19:19

Kitten, just saw your post. No worries.

good thing I'm a pessimist Grin

friends were coming in from outside London and they've had a fair bit, they also seem surprised though they were more determined to beat it than I was. Just keeping fingers crossed for ash scattering next week - I suppose we can rearrange it but the stress to mum...then again, she can't really go out if it snows.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/01/2019 19:26

It was a good call on your behalf :)

I didn't see any other forecasts apart from the XCweather one which alarmed me - so I'm guessing this is a surprise for a lot of Londoners?

lovestea · 22/01/2019 19:47

Grace - my son lives in Finsbury Park and says it is snowing heavy there now, and quite a surprise!
At lunchtime today I messaged him from Oxford to say how much it was snowing here and he didn't believe me. I had to send him a photo to prove it as he said it was blue sky and sunshine in London!

Delatron · 22/01/2019 19:49

I do think this has caught many by surprise. Even the radio is insisting the snow is in the North and West. We’ve had abandoned cars here and people stuck for hours.

Grace212 · 22/01/2019 19:53

Delatron - one of the friends for tonight's night out is near you. I wasn't paying attention to the group messages as I had to accompany someone to hospital earlier, but I'm just catching up and she's also said that she wouldn't have dreamt of trying to come to London if she'd seen a forecast predicting this - she sent a pic of her garden and it looks like quite a lot of snow. Her DC school closed early.

Grace212 · 22/01/2019 19:54

lovestea - eek, even in Finsbury Park? I'm outer zone London.

Delatron · 22/01/2019 19:55

Grace212 it has caused chaos here! My friend left her school in the next town at 4. She’s not home yet! Think the Chilterns and surrounding areas have taken the brunt of the snow and it started about 2.30. Such a surprise! Very pleased I cancelled my plans to drive out.

gttia · 22/01/2019 20:07

I'm wandering what Dartford will get overnight. Slightly concerned my step daughter has come over and I am to take her school 15 miles away tmrw!

MrsKCastle · 22/01/2019 20:10

My daughter has a school trip tomorrow, going from Waltham Abbey area to St Albans... I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be able to go ahead, she'll be devastated if they have to cancel. Right now it's mostly just slush here.

Mof3K · 22/01/2019 20:41

Nothing here in Surrey but a pitiful sprinkling. So fed up of NEVER EVER seeing anything remotely exciting Sad

Titsywoo · 22/01/2019 20:50

Agreed Mof3K - very disappointing as usual.

flatpackbox · 22/01/2019 20:52

Nothing here - the county I live in has cameras on some of its weather stations, always worth a look when venturing out if you live near the hills.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/01/2019 22:00

It's caught every forecaster I know out.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/01/2019 22:01

It's going to fizzle out for most now I think.

magimedi · 22/01/2019 22:21

No rain here & no snow - HOORAY! (East Sussex coast).

And it can fizzle out & fuck off to the far side for ever more Grin

MeAndTheMajor · 22/01/2019 23:23

The Manchester snow shield has been breached!
Ok, it's not exactly sticking in snow day quantities but we have to take what we can get in these parts!

flatpackbox · 23/01/2019 06:35

What on earth is going on with the weather? Minus 5.5 here right now but the met office forecast is for 9 degrees on Saturday!
