I know it will seem quite crackers to start this when the weekend has been so lovely, but we are starting to get some model consistency on GFS for the potential for snow Friday night into Saturday as a northerly plunge looks set to take place.

Primary risk areas are obviously for hillier parts of Scotland and also Wales, but higher ground in the south and south east including over dartmoor and down the east coast may also see some sleet or wet snow.

Snowing in Dartford!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2019 09:01

Darn it! I'm always the last!

We had five minutes about half an hour ago in SW Surrey. Now beautiful blue skies! Three yo DS was very excited. Both of our appetites now certainly whetted for hopefully something more significant next week...

lolaflores · 17/01/2019 09:11

So nice to be with the snow lovers.

Derekmorganwasinmybed · 17/01/2019 09:21

Heavy snow in North Tyneside,it white after 10 minuets

cloudtree · 17/01/2019 09:23

Snow here in the Midlands. Overnight and we have a decent dusting all over which has settled.

ReaganSomerset · 17/01/2019 09:25

So jealous. We have no snow forecast until Friday night and even then its 'rain and snow'. Sad

ScarlettDarling · 17/01/2019 09:33

Started about ten mins ago in Newcastle and now the ground is white! Sad I hate snow...hope it's gone by tomorrow when I need to drive to work.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 17/01/2019 09:36

A good coating in Ashington. DGS is hooting and pointing.

WorraLiberty · 17/01/2019 09:40

Hoping for snow in East London

And subtly placemarking Blush

GloriaSmud · 17/01/2019 09:55

Some thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook here and here.

TheFifthKey · 17/01/2019 10:16

Snowing and actually settling here - Yorkshire coast. Not forecast and not usually much snow here so quite a surprise!

Delatron · 17/01/2019 11:00

Ooh Gloria I’m excited by the netweather summary of potential snow pushing in to south and south east next Tuesday.

It’s just interesting watching how it pans out and how hard it is to forecast!

GloriaSmud · 17/01/2019 11:03

Yes Delatron, (according to the latest GFS run) I would say early Tuesday morning onwards is 'one to watch' at the moment.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2019 11:09

Crikey FifthKey I might need to hang up my forecasters hat. I'm surprised it settled, it must have been heavy.

OYBBK. The snow I reported in Reading earlier got quite heavy near the hospital. By the time I’d driven the mile or so to J11 if the M4 it had stopped. Along the A33 into Basingstoke and it’s sunny here! 😳🙄🤣

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 17/01/2019 11:27

Woke up to snow on the cars in High Peak. Only a dusting but definitely the white stuff.

Getting excited for next week. Xmas Grin

TheFifthKey · 17/01/2019 11:35

It's all gone now but I really didn't expect it to lay on the ground at all! Lasted an hour or so.

GloriaSmud · 17/01/2019 12:47

Weather warnings for tonight and tomorrow. (I'm wondering if a few more will be issued for ice, as it certainly looks like it'll be cold enough tonight.)

We have sleet forecast for Tuesday at 9am. It might not be a full-on blizzard but it's a start!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2019 15:32

06z GFS is very gung ho about cold weather until the end of the model run now. Plenty of potential for snow Tuesday and Wednesday for many. And look at this for close to day time maxes towards the end of the month: Shock with night time minima down to -11c.

It's a long way off yet, but I would check that you know how to turn off your water, and that the stop cock physically moves. I'd lag the condensing pipes if you have a condensing boiler. Check that your outdoor taps water supply is switched off.

If you do it this weekend you can sort out any potential issues before any possible big freeze happens. Remember the water supply issues last late winter Confused

Snow watch!

Our snow has hung about here in the midlands even though its been a bright day. DSs will be pleased when they get home

GloriaSmud · 17/01/2019 16:46

I saw those temperatures this morning OYBBK and thought they were too Shock to post about but then reading the metoffice Outlook, with its cold theme/talk of 'severe frosts' and those figures might not be too wide of the mark Shock

UK Outlook for Tuesday 22 Jan 2019 to Thursday 31 Jan 2019:
Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow for many areas on Tuesday with a chance of snow to low levels but the details of this are currently uncertain. Strong winds are also possible in the southwest. Showery conditions will follow although some brighter weather is also possible later in the week. Thereafter, remaining cold and possibly turning very cold, accentuated by brisk winds which will last through until the end of January. Frontal zones may arrive from the northwest at times bringing spells of rain, sleet and snow. However, some drier and brighter interludes are still likely and these will bring overnight frosts, which will be widespread and locally severe, especially in any longer clear spells.

UK Outlook for Friday 1 Feb 2019 to Friday 15 Feb 2019:
Cold and sometimes very cold weather will continue as we head through the first half of February. It is likely to remain changeable too, especially at first, bringing strong winds and spells of rain which will turn to snow at times. Snow especially over higher ground but there is a greater risk to lower levels too with the cold air in place. Some drier and brighter periods are possible as well, perhaps becoming focused across the northwest with time. Occasional milder and wetter interludes may intersperse the generally cold conditions, these most likely in the south but also posing a more significant risk of snow.

brizzledrizzle · 17/01/2019 17:10

No snow here, nor at Dbro's in the West Midlands.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2019 17:32

The met office seem to be getting a bit more certain Gloria I think?
