I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Humph. I'm
From
Derbyshire but live in the south east. Not even a flake forecast here. Although we did have about twenty minutes of light snow last week...Hmm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/12/2017 08:50

I have to say, I’m jealous, it always seems as though I’m forecasting snow for others!

Loads of snow here. Falling thick and fast too. Everything looks so beautiful. My dc are off school as it's a holy day, I've already had to say no going out until after breakfast.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/12/2017 09:07

So today main snow risk is right down the western side of the UK, but also potentially through central England down through to Northampton.

Saturday the risk is similar.

Sunday is where it gets really interesting for those in the midlands through to central southern areas, somewhere around that area is the boundary between heavy snow and heavy rain and perhaps a mix of the two. My current guess is that the boundary will be somewhere around the Oxford area, but further south could see some snow for a time before it warms up as the low passes.

Monday could see sleet and snow in the south for a time across the chilterns and Surrey hills. I suspect warnings will be out later today for Monday.

After that, a brief warming in the south, cold in the midlands and north still, with a reload of snow potential the following weekend.

Sunday looks to be the most disruptive day for those in the midlands and much of northern England and Wales.

Xmas Grin Pseudo

Think we had a light snow flurry overnight but it's 'warmed' up to 2.3C now. Sunday looks very interesting for us (Leicester)

1happyhippie · 08/12/2017 10:08

We are in Cumbria and have no snow here. Not a single flake!
The sky's blue and it's very bright. It is very cold though. I'm jealous of all the lovely snow pictures.
I want some snow, this side of Christmas would be nice.

Notsureaboutmuchanymore · 08/12/2017 10:09

Just had a few flakes in surrey

magimedi · 08/12/2017 10:11

It is with much joy that I report no snow in Sussex (coast). Grin

magimedi · 08/12/2017 10:12

Even if I am the snow grinch I really do enjoy these threads, Gloria & kitten.

Maud that is a beautiful garden. Very jealous of all with snow. Nothing here...South East

FlowerPotMum · 08/12/2017 10:25

I love these threads. Thank you for all the hard work you put in.
In South Yorks here, Sunday looks to be the main event for us. Just a pity I have a works Xmas do out in the Peaks!

Maudlinmaud · 08/12/2017 10:32

@whywonttheyletmeusemyusername

Thanks, I don't know anything about gardening, I just let it grow and dh cuts the grass. We are expecting 20 inches on Sunday, but to be fair we always get quite a bit. Going to get the sledge out soon and head to the park with a flask of hot winter spice ribena.
Hope you get some your way.

nannynick · 08/12/2017 10:34

This amount of snow does not count.

magimedi, so glad I'm not the only snow grinch Grin

MissRainbowBrite · 08/12/2017 11:11

@Sandsnake Stafford should be clear. I’m about 20 mins away and it’s clear blue skies here, we had a dusting overnight but doesn’t look like much will fall from the sky at the minute, it’s way too sunny.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/12/2017 11:37

Nyx, I'm really uncertain about Sunday and Monday. You'll probably be fine...

Sundays warnings

You can see what a mess it is on the warnings, with the snow warnings having shifted a little further south, amber warnings for some and wind warnings for the south. A lot of potential for disruption.

Thanks for the thanks Grin, it really helps that we have two of us doing these threads.

We're under the Amber warning for snow. Leicester's never under an Amber warning for anything! Xmas Shock
