I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Thanks Gloria- I'm more bothered about getting there than back. Return train is 1.30pm so fingers crossed!

thenightsky · 07/12/2017 19:49

WhispersOfWickedness I'm stressing a bit as DD and her DP will be coming this weekend and will have to drive back to Leeds via M180, M18, M62 on the Sunday.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/12/2017 19:50

Thank you so much to the snow reporters on this thread. I've got a nose warmer, it's a knitted one from Ebay. I made a tactical error in buying an orange one as my husband says I look like a parrot. I don't care...

themightybanhammer · 07/12/2017 19:53

The weather.us site linked to upthread is quite interesting to look at but I think I am having a thick moment and need it explaining

Have been looking at the snow accumulation parameter as linked above, how long is that for ?, is what it gives a total accumulation since the last time slot before the one you select or a total accumulation over the full day ?

If you change the parameter to snow depth then zoom in on your area it looks like some places are going to get a good dumping of snow and when changing the time that can go from quite a few inches to very few later in the day and then back again to 4 inches plus so I think it must only be showing what is expected in a 3 hour period, does that seem right ?

WhispersOfWickedness · 07/12/2017 20:12

Thenightsky- ugh, that is not a good journey to make if the weather turns bad 😔 fingers crossed it misses that part of the world altogether then!

DH has taken DS1 to cricket coaching in Wilmslow, about 25 minutes from here. He is reporting sleet showers. Nothing here apart from rain although it's dried up now and the sky looks like a night time snow sky. I wonder what the morning will bring?

DS1 football on Sunday has already been cancelled but he referees on an artifical pitch on Saturday's and at the moment that is still going ahead.

Moodykat · 07/12/2017 21:57

I love this thread!

JillJ72 · 07/12/2017 22:05

Very mild first thing but now cold and clear with twinkly stars. We're now under a weather warning for snow and ice, with double snowflakes on Sunday. Well, can but wait with anticipation! N Bucks over and out 🤞❄️

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 07/12/2017 22:05

It’s snowing here and according to he met office it’s on for the night so we shall see.
The dc will be very excited if they get up tomorrow to snow the school has their own sledges so they will have a very fun break and lunchtime.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/12/2017 22:07

Im not sure to be truthful Banhammer. It’s clearly purely computer model driven and no one can know the precise location of any showers. That’s impossible. I don’t know the time period.

MrsAD what was the texture of the hail. Was it soft like polystyrene or hard like ice pellets (or in between)

Just catching up :) I think Cardiff may be a bit too coastal for snow to lie, but in the heavier bursts you may get some snow flakes falling.

Sunday may see some unexpected heavy snow in central southern England.

I have more time tomorrow to give a proper analysis. Damn real life getting in the way!

I'm meant to be at a family gathering at a pub on woodhead pass on Sunday afternoon 😩

TheDonald · 07/12/2017 22:15

We had polystyrene hail about an hour ago followed by definite snow but it's stopped now and not stuck. We're in Derbyshire.

Dd is desperate for a snow day tomorrow. I haven't got anywhere to be this weekend so would quite like some good sledging snow.

BrizzleDrizzle · 07/12/2017 22:19

I thought we were going to have snow this morning from the appearance of the sky but no, just the usual drizzle.

Whatslovegottodo · 07/12/2017 22:24

Any idea what Cheshire is going to do? Am assisting with a semi outdoor event this weekend, setting up tomorrow, and thought it may be cancelled but no word yet! Also snow seems to be a bit less likely overnight on my app? Before it was snow every hour from now till Monday!!

SparklingSnowfall · 07/12/2017 22:45

Just watched the BBC forecast (north Cheshire) Sunday looks amazing!!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/12/2017 22:47

polystyrene hail - little bouncy soft pellets is probably what is known as graupel.

DonkeyOaty · 07/12/2017 22:59

I heart graupel OYBBK.

hoochymama1 · 08/12/2017 03:45

Ooo a light dusting of snow here in derbyshire. Too excited to sleep now Grineating a mince pie in celebrationWink

Sandsnake · 08/12/2017 06:58

Anyone near Stafford? I'm meant to be travelling up by train from London today for a meeting. Will be trying to get back this afternoon. I have the option to cancel, looking at the forecast it looks like there might be quite a lot there today. Any thoughts?!

NoStraightEdges · 08/12/2017 07:17

It's snowing in Birmingham Xmas Smile

DeathMetalMum · 08/12/2017 07:25

Snowing and sticking near Chester! I have to go to work later so I'm hoping schools don't close!

UrsulaPandress · 08/12/2017 07:30

Woken up to snow in Saddleworth but the traffic is moving.

Time to find my grips.

Whatslovegottodo · 08/12/2017 07:49

sand my friend has uploaded a Facebook video in Staffordshire and seems to have a decent amount already. They always get more than we do over the border in Cheshire.

Gertrudethestag · 08/12/2017 08:17

Even we have snow and our netweather chance was 0% today.

Xmas Smile not heavy enough to cause problems though. Best of both worlds
