I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

We also had heavy rain, followed by snow, followed by a deep freeze here in Staffordshire Thursday night into Friday morning.
Tonight there is still snow and floods and black ice on the roads.
It's snowed every night here this week (except tonight so far). I really have stopped trusting the forecast which is usually very reliable in our part of the world.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/12/2017 09:03

It sounds pretty nasty TidyBadger. I’m afraid you may have a couple of days more of unpleasantness - some rain today to add to your flooding and perhaps fog tonight (I hope that the temperature will stay above freezing, but it may dip down enough to cause some freezing fog). After tomorrow’s rain, hopefully things will improve.

Freezing rain and freezing fog are two conditions that I fear most in the weather world.

Black ice everywhere this morning on the way to work - the car park was interesting

The sunrise was stunning - oranges and reds, rising above a fog bank further down the motorway

DH says there have been some snow flurries - not that I would know stuck in the office!

notsomanky · 16/12/2017 09:54

Sneaked out and it's still snowing Grin

Light small flakes and the sky is heavy so if it doesn't get warmer I might get excited!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 16/12/2017 10:04

Snowing quite steadily in High Peak.

TidyBadger · 16/12/2017 10:30

Oh how right you are oybbk! It's pouring with rain just now, we've severe flooding just behind our house, only beaten by the floods in 2012.
And guess what? Weather forecast predicted 3 hours of snow this morning. They seem to be getting wrong daily, it must be a complicated job atm.
Praying for a few dry days, we really need some drainage in the flood plains.

GloriaSmud · 16/12/2017 10:42

@Katescurios ~ I think someone made a decision about gritting at a certain time in the evening and based it on the temperature being above freezing and that was it. And it's usually mentioned on the ATC Traffic page something like 'all main roads have been gritted' and there's been nothing like that ~ it all went very quiet after Thursday evening so I think they know they made a wrong decision there!

Yay notsomanky and ILike.

Overcast and a chilly 2C here (Leicester)

educatingarti · 16/12/2017 13:41

Mixture of rain and sleet here ( west Manchester) Really horrible!

SinceWhenDid · 16/12/2017 15:50

Bad kitten, please may you move the jet stream back south so we can keep our cold weather? Don't want a thaw 😣

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/12/2017 18:28

I’d like it a good deal further south than it is!

We were in Buckinghamshire today. Patchy snow and ice today around there and raining on top of it. Pretty lethal combination.

Fog descending here.

As thick as it's been in years.

Pavements slippery, roads treacherous.

SparklingSnowfall · 16/12/2017 21:04

It's terrible here this evening, (Cheshire) god descending rapidly, -1, everything wet and quickly turning to ice, I'm contemplating going to bed soon!

SparklingSnowfall · 16/12/2017 21:04

Fog!! I meant fog!!

gallicgirl · 16/12/2017 21:14

Hooray! I thought Kitten had left, I never seem to see these threads.

I have a friend from Florida visiting late January /early February. It would be awesome if you could arrange some snow for her. (South Essex).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/12/2017 21:17

at god descending!! Is armageddon happening?

I think the fog could be freezing in places, please take care if you are travelling.

gallicgirl Shock as if I’d leave! I’m not as prolific as I used to be, I don’t seem to have the time nowadays. Snow? yes of course, I’ll sort that out Xmas Grin

God descending. ... well it is almost Christmas!

Raining here this morning (highlands) still loads of snow on the ground and where it is compacted it will be so icy

NoStraightEdges · 26/12/2017 22:03

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2017 22:06

I’m in Birmingham Smile

NoStraightEdges · 26/12/2017 22:19

Oooh, I'll pop over, thanks OYBBK

It's coming down thick and settling despite it absolutely chucking it down for hours beforehand!

Wh0KnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 26/12/2017 22:27

Yes, turned to sleet then snow a couple of hours ago after torrential rain. A couple of inches lying here now and coming down fast but small flakes.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2017 22:32

I'll post in here too as well as the Christmas weather thread then :)

weather warnings

It's a very marginal situation for most in the warning area overnight. I think some will be rather disappointed. As ever, the higher your altitude, the more likely it is to snow.

For those in the south, we have a dry interlude before more rain moves in. The back edge of that may turn to snow if the rain is heavy enough.

Followed by a cold day for also tomorrow.
