I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

It's mostly gone to slush now and has been raining/sleeting on and off all night.

GloriaSmud · 14/12/2017 06:31

OYBBK ~ Xmas Grin we did indeed!

We had snow last night as well and had about a cm. Despite it being 2.7C, there's still a slight covering now and think it might have frozen during the night.

InMySpareTime · 14/12/2017 07:22

Out in Trafford we got some splodgy sleet and there's not even ice on the many puddles outside this morning. Not all of Manchester got snowSad

Nyx1 · 14/12/2017 12:54

I've lost the plot slightly about whether it's okay to use this as a general weather thread.

General weather comment - I have been so pleased by the mild winters the last few years, I'm really struggling with the cold - having eyes and nose streaming just doing some local stuff is so annoying.

I really hope it warms up a bit!

“Ive lost the plot slightly about whether it's okay to use this as a general weather thread.”

me too Nyx! Might be better if we have a general weather thread in the weather section, so that when this one gets bumped they know something is a foot.

StrictlyPannnn · 15/12/2017 08:15

Yes Scots lass????

But v recently married a townie girl and this is her first experience of a Peak District winter....😃

Whatslovegottodo · 15/12/2017 08:22

More snow overnight in west Cheshire. It's pretty slippery out this morning!!

Only1scoop · 15/12/2017 08:25

A covering here Staffs

GloriaSmud · 15/12/2017 08:54

Slight covering here as well (Leicester) It appears the council in their wisdom and despite the forecast, have not done any gritting at all so everywhere, including main roads are lethal this morning.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/12/2017 09:15

Gloria, hilariously our council did decide to grit late last night, despite warming temps and rain coming in. Unfortunately, given their very limited budget for gritting, I fear they may come to regret that.

OYBBK ~ It was an utter nightmare out there! DD1's college bus was 40 minutes late as everyone was taking it very gingerly. According to Area Traffic Control's twitter page, gritters were out last night but I can't believe the roads would be that bad if they were! Where we live, we're classed as a 'secondary route' and we always hear the gritter go past even when it isn't forecast to be that icy. Not last night though, which I thought was odd seeing as it was forecast to be near freezing and that it was obvious that after everything had melted yesterday, it would all freeze again overnight. Added to that the slight snow covering we had overnight, this morning wasn't fun!

BlackeyedSusan · 15/12/2017 13:21

atroceous conditions. one school closed due to black ice and several teachers have discovered the hard way. hopefully no broken bones or serious damage.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 15/12/2017 13:37

It hasn’t snowed much this week at all where I am but it hasn’t thawed yet from last week either.
The rain last night turned the whole village in to a skating rink. I take a couple of dd’s friends to school in the bad weather and they usually come to mine but I collected them all this morning they would never have got here on foot. I have a nice gritted area from house to all around my car but the car park for the houses was crazy.
Got back from the school run and the gritters have been round there stable doors and horses sprung to mind although I’ve noticed a few grit boxes have appeared on street corners over the last week.

sluj · 15/12/2017 13:41

Could I make a polite request for people to say roughly where they are ? It makes it much more interesting and relevant.
Thank you akk

GloriaSmud · 15/12/2017 14:33

Sorry sluj ~ I usually add where I am (Leicester) but forgot in my ranting post this morning!
We had a gritter go past about an hour ago. It's 6.1C! As LooksBetter says, stable doors and horses....

SinceWhenDid · 15/12/2017 14:54

Snowing again here in the Highlands. Been snowy for weeks.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 15/12/2017 15:01

Where are you SinceWhen my part of the Highlands is just cold and icy. I would happily take the proper snow back over this at least the snow slowed everyone down a bit. Seen some crazy driving on icy roads the last couple of days.

SinceWhenDid · 15/12/2017 15:20

Nearish aviemore. We did have a wee thaw then it came back. Not a huge amount but constant cold snowy icy weather.

notsomanky · 15/12/2017 16:32

Cold and clear today. I braved Manchester town centre, the pavements on the way to the station were lethal, and there were cars skidding on the local roads that had not been gritted.

All of the Stockport grass pitches have shut this weekend due to the weather DS is playing on astro for once so hopefully he will get a game in. At this rate football season is going to run into cricket season and then I will have a sulky DS1.

As much as I am keen to see snow I'm now stressing because we have to travel to Glasgow on the 23rd, and back on the 26th. So now I want it not to snow until the 27th, if you can arrange that Gloria and OYBBK

Yes Pan that's me! Congratulations on the wedding,I hope you warned her about the weather!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 15/12/2017 20:35

Ah yeah Since you’ll have snow on and off more than the rest of us then. It’s bad here tonight do came in from work couldn’t get his car in properly so has gritted the car park and around the neighbours bit as well because she goes out early to do elderly home care and she got stuck trying to get out this morning.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/12/2017 21:00

If you like Manky, we will have snow in the south until the 27th, then you can have it for a bit if you like Xmas Grin

ice warnings for many overnight. Then we have a bit of a warm up with rain at times, esp for the NW. I have no clue about Christmas, the models are all over the place.

It sounds like pretty challenging conditions Gloria and Manky. All I had to dodge was mud!

Katescurios · 15/12/2017 21:07

@GloriaSmud

I'm in Leicester too, no grit anywhere near our road at all, yesterday morning was the worse, freezing rain on top of ice turned the road and all pavements into a solid stretch of sheet ice. Really dangerous, thankfully seems to be nearly all gone now.

Not sure what Leicester city council were thinking on this one.
