I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Neighbours say 10c in London next week! What say you, experts?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 13/12/2017 19:24

Just started snowing in High Peak, there's still some on the ground despite quite a big thaw today, will keep you updated!

jacrispy · 13/12/2017 19:28

It’s not just my drive, that’s the driveway to the house!

Robyrollover · 13/12/2017 19:42

Will it ever snow in Devon?! Envy

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/12/2017 19:55

Nyx, possibly for a time yes, but checkout the Christmas forecast thread.

Heavy sleet/Snow here. 2 minute up the road 1 cm is snow has fallen in 15 minutes but it's not sticking here

TheDonald · 13/12/2017 20:12

SNOW!!!

Coming down fast for the last few mins. Extra bonus is that I'm off tomorrow so I can go out for a run!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 13/12/2017 20:23

I've just driven from Cumbria to the south coast. Car thermometer has said 5°C the whole way apart from a little while when it dropped a bit through Staffs. No snowfall, bit of rain here. I was surprised at how little snow I could see actually.

notsomanky · 13/12/2017 20:30

Oooh. Sticking here now.

TidyBadger · 13/12/2017 20:35

Had probably an inch in the last half hour! Last lots had just about thawed. Forecasters seem to be predicting rain all night but if it all comes as snow we’ll be stuck again tomorrow.

Sounds like Manchester is getting a bit of a pasting. The snow shield failed! Xmas Shock

There wasn't much mention of snow from what I saw on accuweather or metoffice but netweather had it pretty spot on.

Do they use different methods? And are they usually the most accurate?

notsomanky · 13/12/2017 21:42

We had about 1cm of snow but it keeps going between snow, sleet and rain. The roads and pavements are covered. It's dry now so we will see what happens overnight

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/12/2017 21:43

the met office are usually the most accurate. They have a range of models they use. However they aren’t perfect (and Gloria and I called the last bout of snow before they did Grin )

leesmum · 13/12/2017 22:45
