I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

when is warm weather coming to melt all the awful please? Sliding off to work now so will reply tomorrow....

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 11/12/2017 18:48

School are open tomorrow. I feel like a bad parent for not sending them but it's already lethal out there but with 3 walking & a double buggy I don't feel confident. I've got 2 broken ribs as it is. The police & highways are saying don't travel by car or foot unless essential...

Janetsadick · 11/12/2017 21:53

Our school is open too. Highways saying don’t drive unless necessary. Roads are treacherous.

Message from school sayin anyone not coming in due to weather will go down as unauthorised 🙄🤷‍♀️

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2017 22:04

upperlimit, if also the 850hpa temps were below -5c (very roughly) then I’d expect so.

Nyx, possibly this weekend. But that’s not yet set in stone.

Second snow day due to treacherous conditions ... ❄️ ice ice baby!

GloriaSmud · 12/12/2017 07:28

-5.2C here (Leicester) slightly warmer than the -9 they forecast. Xmas Grin
But it's back to school for everyone no snow day for us.
Take care everyone that has to be out and about today.

teta · 12/12/2017 08:28

-12.4 degrees was recorded here at 5am. Local schools are shut still due to the volume of snow. We can’t get down our hill and get to the children’s schools that are open in the nearest towns.I’m hoping we will be able to make it in later.

Nyx1 · 12/12/2017 10:47

looks like we might hit 7c tomorrow which would cheer me up and melt the black ice...what do Gloria and Kitten think? North London/Herts border.

GloriaSmud · 12/12/2017 11:29

Weather warning for ice for a lot of the country tonight and into tomorrrow. Especially hazardous if rain falls on to frozen ground.

We' re up to -1 here now, low overnight was -5.9C

Only1scoop · 12/12/2017 13:17

Dreading the melt Sad

Hi all. This morning was a diabolical school run...2 hours to do a 20 minute journey, only for school to decide to shut early due to "hazardous road conditions". The air was blue !!! Can kitten or Gloria confirm if the rain scheduled for London tomorrow, is likely to turn to snow? (As I've just heard...albeit an unreliable source)

GloriaSmud · 12/12/2017 18:29

Oh whywon'tthey ~ I had a school run like that a few years ago!
Yes, it should be rain tomorrow for London.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 12/12/2017 18:44

Thanks Gloria....I'm debating whether or not to navigate the school run first thing, or take them in a bit later !!!

GloriaSmud · 12/12/2017 20:54

You'll probably be OK, whywon'tthey, to do a school run at the normal (9am ish?) time ~ temperatures are due to rise towards the morning and you'll probably be needing your umbrella more than your sledge and skis!

Our temperature here (Leicester) is warmer now than it's been all day ~ 2.6C and it's raining.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/12/2017 21:09

you’ll be fine whywontthey, it won’t turn to snow.

It's raining in Oxford at the moment - praying it doesn't freeze as home and work are both surrounded by untreated roads and pavements!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/12/2017 21:28

Every muscle in my body aches from pushing a pushchair - with a toddler in it and a 5 year old holding on to it - up and down hill over sheet ice. Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/12/2017 22:01

I think you’ll be ok mumonashoestring. Thanks for your advice the other day.

Thank you both...it's raining here now and we're at 7 degrees

Whatslovegottodo · 13/12/2017 08:13

Sheet ice and treacherous pavements and housing estates in west Cheshire this morning. Bizarre the schools are open today when the conditions are more dangerous than the thick fluffy snow of Monday!

GloriaSmud · 13/12/2017 09:56

whatslove ~ I've found the same this morning on the school run. Today has been worse than Monday and yesterday. Snow is melting quickly now though and we're up to 5C

BobbinThreadbare123 · 13/12/2017 13:24

S Cumbria is about 6°C, murky and it has rained heavily this morning. Drier now.

Gertrudethestag · 13/12/2017 14:52

Does anyone think there'll be any further snowfall this month?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 13/12/2017 16:08

It's forecast a big dumping over High Peak tonight. Any thoughts OYBBK?
