I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Have had an hour of heavy snow so far this morning, but not expecting it to lay as the ground is too wet.

borntobequiet · 11/12/2017 10:00

View from my window, S Worcs.

gorgeous view @borntobequiet - I'm guessing you look over either Worcestershire or Herefordshire. I've got to drive your way on Friday, I hope it's cleared by then.

BishopBrennansArse · 11/12/2017 10:20

I'm in Brighton and it's wet snow

FoodSchmood · 11/12/2017 10:21

It's snowing in Hove!! Was rain, then sleet, now alternating between wet sleety stuff and proper snowflakes. My builder just rang from Poynings (Just north of Brighton&Hove - on the downs) and in the last hour it's turned to snow and there's snow laying on the ground! Netweather's weather radar says rain/snow north east ish of Brighton (which I think means sleet?) and there's green (rain/snow) patches on the radar either side of us! If only the temp would drop a little lower! I'd love some proper snow here!

borntobequiet · 11/12/2017 10:32

Thanks Brizzle, yes, I look over the Severn valley towards the Malverns, so across Worcs and towards Herefordshire. Have realised my window needs cleaning .

Am down your way Sat visiting relatives in Bristol, so also hope all will have cleared by then!

Nyx1 · 11/12/2017 10:48

I'm hoping the heavy snow forecast for us later today is wrong...it's raining and not that cold.

BishopBrennansArse · 11/12/2017 10:49

Dyke Road, Hove.
Tons of it!

Settling on Devil's Dyke!

RatOnnaStick · 11/12/2017 10:51

Urgh! Sleet Xmas Angry. Heavy winds and driving sleet. It's disgusting here in S Kent. I'd rather it just rained.

Snow here again, forecast all day!

I am so hoping it's going to stop....

Titsywoo · 11/12/2017 11:42

It's snowing here but too wet to settle on the roads apart from a horrible slush. Looks like it's going to be freezing overnight though - bbc has minus 5 at 8am tomorrow. Will be very slippery!

tinytemper66 · 11/12/2017 13:08

A beautiful walk this morning. Snow day without the snow ❄️

DH had to get the train yesterday (Dublin to Cork) and it was snowy all through the Midlands up until the second last stop. The it got back to just cold and wet in Cork (both are too near the sea for snow most of the time).

Lots of ice this morning in Dublin, and there is snow on the hills surrounding the city, but the city itself is fine.

I have to drive down tomorrow through the midlands, so I'm hoping that it has had a chance to thaw a good bit today.......(and DH will be driving us all back home Tuesday night, I hope!).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2017 13:48

ice warnings out now for overnight. By 9pm this evening untreated wet surfaces are likely to be getting hazardous. I know that’s from the ministry of bleeding obvious but ice is something I hate.

Temps could drop locally to around -8c in central areas like Benson in Oxfordshire and widespread temps dropping to around -3/-4c where skies clear away from the west.

In East Lothian we've just had a tiny amount of drizzle-sized flakes. There was a decent frost this morning so the baby snow has settled. I'm more worried about the ice.

GreenBook · 11/12/2017 13:59

@OYBBK Its managing to rain at 1c here. Dew points are too high I think. It may turn to snow later but I’m very unsure about that.

Can you explain about dew points? I'm in S London and as far as I can tell, it's sleet / icy rain / snow flurries but even though the car says 0C it's not settling. Is that dew points or the ground being too (relatively) warm and so it's were rather than icy?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2017 14:10

dew point is a measure of how damp the air is. It’s the temperature to which wait must be cooled to reach saturation point. If it’s too high, we don’t get snow in these conditions

tiny, I want to be where you are!!

bit more snow here. I think it will all ice over by about 6pm. Ugh.

upperlimit · 11/12/2017 14:25

We have a dew point of -3c and it's -2c, so if we got any cloud cover (looks at glorious sunshine) will it snow? Or does it mean, if it did snow, it would lay?

AFingerofFudge · 11/12/2017 15:01

Ok I'm sure you've all been waiting with bated breath (Grin) but we didn't attempt the trip to CP at Sherwood yesterday. Chilled out at home instead, and then left this morning. Motorways all clear, a straight run up, and we're here. Sigh. And relax.

Nyx1 looks more glamorous as I didn't show the side with the steel works! Ha!

GloriaSmud · 11/12/2017 16:31

Wonderful AfingerofFudge ~ think it was a good decision to delay things and glad you've now made it. Hope you have a lovely time.

This was the wintry scene in my garden this morning and melted, then frozen snow hanging off our conservatory roof (I did knock it off afterwards as I didn't want the possibility of damage to the gutter!)
