I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Pet hate - people who go out when it's really obvious you only go for essential reasons.

currently have parents on phone blithering about some party they are meant to go to. They are nearly 80 and will never get the car out if it gets stuck etc. What is so complicated about just not going?!

SideOrderofSprouts · 10/12/2017 11:18

No snow here just gale force 9 wind and rain

megletthesecond · 10/12/2017 11:20

Same here (north hampshire). Roads are flooding and the trees are bending precariously 🌧🌬.

At least snow would be quiet.

Thebluedog · 10/12/2017 11:21

Hmmm I’m in north Notts and it’s been snowing all morning but oniy about a cm has stuck. I’m supposed to be driving to Leeds at 7am for a client meeting. I’m not sure if I should cancel or not?

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 11:30

Thebluedog ~ you should be OK. It's going to be icy though and temperatures aren't going to be much above freezing all day.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 10/12/2017 11:35

I shal be off later from just north of derby to Worcestershire.

Wish me luck ! Thankfully I have a 4x4.

lamettarules · 10/12/2017 11:36

nyx have a little compassion for parents .As you get older simple things just do get complicated ,you don't know what to do for the best or how to act your age .

You'll find out if you're able to get to that age .

mumonashoestring · 10/12/2017 11:39

All Oxford bus services are suspended until further notice - includes airport & London coaches and Park & Ride.

And it's still snowing...

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 10/12/2017 11:42

Anyone know how the motorways are ?

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 11:43

Bus services in Leicester have just been suspended as well. Still snowing here..

nancy75 · 10/12/2017 11:47

SE London / Kent borders, quite a lot of snow at 7.30 and it was starting to settle but then it turned to rain & it’s all been washed away. Quite happy not to have it today, DD is going to something at the o2 later and my day will be much easier without snow!

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 11:49

Fishfingers TrafficEngland might be able to help. They do have cameras but rather unhelpfully, they all seem to be down at the moment.

exLtEveDallas · 10/12/2017 11:53

DDs High School has just called a snow day for tomorrow. Hopefully mine will do the same soon...

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 11:58

exLtEveDallas ~ I'm just waiting to see whether DDs 2 and 3's school call a snow day as well. Last time we had this amount of snow on a Sunday, they gave warnings that they were 'looking at the conditions' throughout he afternoon but it wasn't officially decided until after 9pm that they would close.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 10/12/2017 11:58

We've got 10cm here & still falling. Just had a power cut too (only 3 hours thankfully). The dc are hoping for a snow day tomorrow but our school didn't shut in 2010 when we had more than this so we'll see.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 12:02

thanks Mum. Will update the other thread.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 12:18

lametta - my parents did this when they were 20 I expect! I can certainly vouch for them doing it when I was little. I know a lot of of people are like this - it's fine if you can cope with the results but they never can. To be fair, it's my dad who will want to go, mum will see sense but when they're on the phone looking at inches of snow and saying "maybe it will improve"....you can barely get out of their street when it snows.

Some people are just like this...I remember last time it snowed, we called off a trip to another county, someone else was driving - and one of the mums said "but if you get stuck you'll be in the car, it'll be okay". Oh yes, it's the dream of my life to be stuck in a car with another family with toddlers!!! (She saw sense in the end and didn't go either).

BBC are reporting a low of -6 for this area tomorrow night!

nannynick · 10/12/2017 12:34

Snow just started to fall... West Surrey, Berkshire border.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 12:36

I’m surprised there are not ice warnings out for tuesday morning. There is also still some potential for snow in the SE tomorrow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 12:36

On the latest radar it looks like the snow line will come just a little further south than it already is today.
