I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Got a good 6 inches here in Warwickshire and it is still coming down thick and fast, I'm super excited I love snow ! It started about 4am and yes I was on snow watch most of the night . DD is hoping it will be no school tomorrow.

AFingerofFudge · 10/12/2017 10:18

Hmm, think our chances of getting from here (Gloucestershire) to Center Parcs at Sherwood via an overnight stay in Leicestershire tonight are slim. Would like to talk to DH about our options but he has just come in from a 2.5 hour run (Hmm), had a quick shower and gone out again before I had chance to say anything Angry

SquirrelPlantedBeech · 10/12/2017 10:20

We're now having a huge dilemma about what to do today. We're rural so we don't want to risk going out if the heavy snow is going to come. But it doesn't look as if it's going to. We both have a very busy week and don't want to waste today.
Also I forgot that OH is working in the area south of Birmingham tomorrow. He has an early start. All along we thought that any problems he may encounter would be here at our end but it looks as if that area has already seen a lot of snow.

Ohb0llocks · 10/12/2017 10:22

Bugger all here in East Lancashire. Just bits left over from yesterday.

CustardOmlet · 10/12/2017 10:24

@AFingerofFudge I can confirm that the A46 around Leicester is moving (I can see it from my window!) but the snow is still coming down.

gttia · 10/12/2017 10:28

I'm watching as met office say London is due snow all afternoon.
I'm wandering what the impact will be in work tmrw...
I hope everyone is safe and warm, remember elderly neighbours if your popping out for shopping they may need stuff picking up x

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 10/12/2017 10:29

It's narnia here as well....London....settling and still snowing...thick and fast.

BishBoshBashBop · 10/12/2017 10:31

Still coming down thick and fast here, with idiots attempting to drive not taking the weather into account.

BuzzKillington · 10/12/2017 10:37

My ds has day one of his mocks tomorrow. Hoping for a snow day!

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 10:45

FingerofFudge I think the main roads are OK but it's the side/country roads that you have to watch. Leicester's Area Traffic control are giving out an 'only drive if absolutely necessary' message at the moment.

Nyx1 · 10/12/2017 10:45

so the last minute forecast for snow in North London was right.

that's the most last minute forecast we've ever had. They didn't grit round here, probably because the council lost the plot.

I'm glad I kept checking but it is weird that we went from 7c and rain to this in about 5 minutes, in forecasting terms. I do wish the websites and TV people would be more honest in terms of "really not sure"!

AFistfulOfDolores · 10/12/2017 10:47

Snow in N. Cambridgeshire / East of England - about 2-3 inches, though the roads are still open it seems. Still coming down now.

AFingerofFudge · 10/12/2017 10:48

custard thank you for the local update SmileI may ask you for one later this afternoon.
DH has come back in and been stupidly upbeat about the drive. There's an option to stay in a travelodge tonight near CP, which may be better than breaking our journey in Leicestershire and travelling in the ice tomorrow.
I'm well aware it's a minor problem in the grand scheme, I'm just crap at making decisions!!!

zwellers · 10/12/2017 10:48

This is sutton coldfield this am. Stopped snowing. Bet it's gone tomorrow. About 5cm deep

A covering here in Nottingham. It's barely an inch deep but has been snowing for a couple of hours. It's very light. Looking at the net weather stuff it seems it will be like this all day. Don't even think it's good enough for a snowman or sledging Xmas Angry

SparklingSnowfall · 10/12/2017 10:50

No snow in north Cheshire so we've driven to north Wales to find loads!!!

MongerTruffle · 10/12/2017 10:51

It's snowed here today for the first time in five years.
(I live in the East of England.)

Margomyhero · 10/12/2017 10:55

West Yorkshire and nothing bar a few flakes. The forecast had been for some heavy snow today but has now changed.

CustardOmlet · 10/12/2017 11:00

@AFingerofFudge if you @ before my name I’ll get an email to say you have asked for the update! It’s really not far from Leicester to CP, if it’s possible you would be better off just carrying on.

NannyOggsKnickers · 10/12/2017 11:00

There’s loads in Worcestershire. And it’s still coming. We’re up to about five inches now. It seems to have settled in for the day!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 10/12/2017 11:01

I feel completely ripped off! I live in High Peak, we always get tonnes of snow and we have some from Friday, but bugger-all overnight!!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 10/12/2017 11:03

Lots of icicles on the shed though!
