I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Oh yes, poor Oxford candidates. Im sure they are all stressed enough already without having deal with snow travel chaos.
actually that has reminded me DS is meant to be going to Cambridge for the day tomorrow.
Any folks in that area - do you have snow?

dementedma · 10/12/2017 09:35

it's weird that the rest of the UK has snow and here in Central Scotland we have none - we are usually pretty badly hit. It is very cold though. The washing I left out overnight has frozen to the line and the little pond is frozen solid. Good job we don't have any fish in there.

mumonashoestring · 10/12/2017 09:37

Buses are okay at the moment, they've been gritting like crazy the last few days but there will be some of the 'smaller' routes that I imagine will stop running later. Will check the P&R and post - also will depend if it freezes later and what the A34 is like

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 09:37

I think netweather are underestimating the amounts given the radar and photos we are already seeing.

demented, it’s just a case that the weather system missed you.

Thanks mumonashoestring.

dottybear, while Cambridge has snow today, I’m hopeful that it will be clear enough tomorrow for travel. If it’s critical he needs to be there, dont just take my word for it though, keep checking the met office and travel information.

We're nearish Oxford Parkway and the main roads have been cleared so assume the P&R is operating op

Oblomov17 · 10/12/2017 09:42

Blimey. A bit of slush here in Surrey. Both boys Cup football matches called off and they are disappointed. Sad

Only1scoop · 10/12/2017 09:43

Will be checking here as am Luton bound tmrw really early from North Staffs.

Always love your threads Grin

Snow is quite deep here and still going. I live on top of a hill no cars are getting up or down. Hopefully school will be shut tomorrow as I have no chance walking down the hill in this.

OYBBK / Gloria is it all moving north or staying put?

We're at the top of Derbyshire and we are getting very light snow at the moment but I think it's much heavier only a few miles away.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 09:58

although you will probably see more light snow TheDonald, the low pressure exits the uk around Suffolk and so you are unlikely to see buckets of snow.

bad thanks. Yes,we will check again later. He is going down to work on a project he's doing with his tutor (he's at Cambridge uni, but back home now for holidays) I suppose it isn't totally critical - but he has bought his train tickets. (and being 19 he never listens to advise, and seems to think he is somewhat invincible so Imagine will try to go if at all possible!!)

BishopBrennansArse · 10/12/2017 09:59

Bugger all here Sad

whojamaflip · 10/12/2017 09:59

small flakes still falling here in South Yorks....may end up with an icing sugar dusting!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 10:01

dotty, there should be no excuse for the train company, but sadly, I know what they are like!

I'm in Norfolk. My phone says it's snowing but it's raining only.

6yo ds has never seen proper snow. I'm so disappointed. Again.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 10:04

showofhands, don’t give up hope for this winter.

TheDonald · 10/12/2017 10:05

Grrr. Sulky faces all round here. What's the point of living in the peaks if we don't get snow!

Dd 16 will be gutted she will need to revise for her chemistry test tomorrow.

ShowOfHands · 10/12/2017 10:07

Don't do that. Don't offer hope. It's the same every year. I long for real snow. I have lots of memories of lovely snow days as a child. My DC think it's all lies.

Rikalaily · 10/12/2017 10:08

Tiny flakes have been falling for the last hour on the Wirral, not sticking but according to the met office we were due heavy snow at 9am, the light snow started a few hours later than they predicted so I reckon it will get here about lunchtime.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 10:12

off to church now. Back at lunchtime.
