I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Lots in south Oxfordshire, and it's still coming down.

sluj · 10/12/2017 09:01

Six inches Melon!!!! My part of Herts has about an inch but we are in the far East.

Hold on a minute, did a man tell you it was six inches?? Smile😁

Wh0KnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 10/12/2017 09:02

None here, just raining (Hampshire).

bookbook · 10/12/2017 09:02

dotty - I am East Riding, and netweather still showing 95% chance of snow at about 3- 5 this afternoon. The BBC has gone from dry on yesterdays forecast to light snow at 12 . It is actually just dry and cold here at the moment, so no idea what is due to happen

WhispersOfWickedness · 10/12/2017 09:02

AH HA! IN YOUR FACE, MET OFFICE!
I knew our little microclimate on top of a hill would deliver the goods Grin

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 10/12/2017 09:03

Woke up to snow in the far SE this morning (I am high up though) totally unexpected. I thought it wasn’t coming further down than Norfolk?

borntobequiet · 10/12/2017 09:07

S Worcs, 7 cm or so, quite exposed half way up a big hill. Won't be going anywhere today and probably not tomorrow either...

Gertrudethestag · 10/12/2017 09:07

Dry with some very quick rain showers and extremely windy in Cornwall

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 09:07

NaturalBlonde I think it all shifted south slightly so that's why London/SE have got snow as well.

dottybear · 10/12/2017 09:09

WAIT...I've just seen a snowflake!! Ha! Tiny, tiny little flakes, only about 10 in total....but I can at least say it snowed! maybe in with a chance after all....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 09:11

It was evident last night that the system was developing further south than expected. Snow really highlights that although forecasting is very good (this was in the models 10 days ago), we still don’t have the resolution that people would like.

When it comes to snow, even a small change in conditions that people would never normally notice (1-2c or heavier rain than expected) or a shift in the system of 10-20 miles will make all the difference.

It's snowing in Essex this morning, proper big flakes too not the usual slushy stuff.

ACertainRatio · 10/12/2017 09:20

North Oxfordshire and we've had blizzard conditions since about 3am. I reckon we've got about 10cm/5 inches snow.

flingingmelon · 10/12/2017 09:20

My six inches is based on the height of my He-Man doll when I was a kid, so yes, a man Grin

We are on top of a hill, if that helps.

keepondreaming · 10/12/2017 09:22

South coast = rain Xmas Biscuit

mumonashoestring · 10/12/2017 09:24

We've even got proper, settling snow (3" so far) in Oxford itself this morning. Dog and DS are competing to see who can get the most overexcited about it. Brave of the dog, he was somewhat behind the door when the legs were being handed out so we're going to take them both to the park before it gets to 'delicate parts' depth Grin It's still coming down thick and fast.

millimat · 10/12/2017 09:25

So West cheshire has lots but north cheshire has none Hmm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 09:25

I’ve never heard of he-man units before Grin

imagines conversation “how much snow have we had today?”
“12 he-mans”
“good gracious, we’d best send out a search party for the kids”
Xmas Shock Xmas Grin

Oh crumbs Oxford Uni might have to postpone until after Christmas Confused 19 years since I did mine!!!

SquirrelPlantedBeech · 10/12/2017 09:27

Think my bit of Cheshire is in the Manchester shield !
After serious doom mongering by the Met Office on Thursday and Friday about how much snow there would be here today, there’s not been a flake so far. Just what’s left from yesterday which is all grey and slushy. We changed our plans for today based on the amber warning, now changing them back.

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 09:29

I'm always amazed how such tiny flakes (as we're having at the moment), can produce such a covering. We're up to 5cms or so now (no He-Man dolls involved in that estimation!)

Alwaysinmyheart · 10/12/2017 09:31

Bloody ell, just woke up to this!

There are a few students I think who have to get to Oxford today or tomorrow for their interviews. Apart from ‘don’t travel’ which would not be useful for them at this point, can anyone offer any advice about conditions, or clear routes on this thread please.

How are the buses coping and is the park and ride operating?

Netweather's thoughts on the snow today.
